In-Home Caregiver, Carmen, is “Tsunami of Hope” | BrightStar Care® Charlotte

Charlotte area in home caregiver Carmen makes an impact on her clients as well as their loved ones, which is one reason she was chosen as the 2022 BrightStar Care® Caregiver of the Year for the Southeast Region.
In her role as an in-home caregiver, Carmen, HHA arrives at the home of Louis and his daughter, Nance, in the morning. They start the day in the kitchen with all three of them chatting and often laughing together.
On “Crazy Fridays,” Carmen will sometimes show up in a funny hat or crazy shirt that makes Louis break out into a wide grin. These moments are precious to Nance.
A combat veteran who served in Vietnam, Nance describes her father as influential and described his distinguished military service as a career Army officer and Infantry Airborne Ranger before becoming a professor at WestPoint.
While away on a work trip, he was discovered on the floor of his hotel room. He’d had a stroke and suddenly everything changed overnight.
Nance’s world turned upside down and the fact that this had happened to her invincible dad left her overwhelmed and somewhat lost.
But then caregiver Carmen arrived - and she was a force of faith, hope and positivity. She met the challenge head on to care for Louis, who Nance describes as having a “big personality with texture.”
It’s a team effort, with Carmen explaining that she respects Louis, just like Nance does. They both care for him and want the best for him each day. She said she loves the fact that BrightStar Care truly cares about each client, “I’m thankful for that. I am really, really thankful!”
Carmen’s presence also fills a void in Nance’s life since she’s a family caregiver. “I’m thankful for Carmen because at the end of the day it’s just me and dad. I don’t interact with anyone else, so it’s nice to have that interaction for myself too.”
