The first five Rafale fighter aircraft built for the Indian Air Force have ferried to India from the Dassault Aviation Mérignac facility on July 27, 2020.
On July 29th the first five Rafale fighter jets arrived in India from France, out of a total order of 36 aircraft placed in 2016 which has set the Indian Defence Ministry back $9.35 billion - or $$242-260 million per fighter depending on the exchange rates. Following clashes with Chinese forces in the Ladakh region on India’s northern border, the country has moved to reinforce its positions in the region and will deploy its first five Rafale jets to the area as part of this wider effort.
The Rafales, three single-seater and two twin-seater aircraft, took off from Dassault Aviation Mérignac facility to ferry to Ambala Air Force Station for entering service in N°17 Squadron “Golden Arrows”.
The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine, canard delta wing, multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation. Equipped with a wide range of weapons, the Rafale is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction, aerial reconnaissance, ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike and nuclear deterrence missions. The Rafale is referred to as an "omnirole" aircraft by Dassault.
