There's the irregularly shaped hole - that I think must have either been a solid wall between the fuel inlet orifice and the plunger hole. As it is, there is a hole between the regulator space, the fuel inlet, and the plunger space. I wondered if the idea was that the plunger didn't need a valve because it should clear the orifice in the plunger body? But this seems a little primitive and subject to hydraulically locking when the plunger is hard-down, and the regulator is closed.

I'm trying to fix an old injector pump from a decades-old Yanmar. It operates similarly to the one shown here. My problem is it looks like there needs to be a one-way valve into the plunger space, but there's only an irregularly shaped hole. I'm trying to make a valve into the fuel line to take the place of the one that (must have) been there, but it's a job!!!!!!. !0th attempt coming up shortly.

I've been trying to find diagrams of this pump (from the 225cc Yanmar single cylinder diesel, but I've found nothing descriptive. I've watched this video quite a few times, and the only conclusion I can come up with as to why mine isn't putting out enough pressure into the fuel line is it is lacking a valve. There's the ball valve on the outlet, one behind the injector, and the conical shaped regulator valve... But no valve on the fuel line into the pump.
