Repentance gets a bad rap... thanks for bringing some clarity! I've always found these three pictures helpful in my understanding. 1. Repentance means to do a u-turn 2. Repentance means to plead guilty 3. Repentance means to accept the invitation Essentially to repent means to admit you were wrong, change your way of life, and live as a citizen of heaven. It's more about actions we take, not the words we say.

That’s not biblical. Repent translates from the Greek work metanoia, which means To think differently, or A change of mind. Regarding salvation it means to turn from whatever you think saves you and believe in what Jesus did for us. For example: “testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance 👉🏻toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” Acts 20:21 NKJV

Metanoia/Metanoeo is a compound word which literally translates as "meta" = change, and "nous" = mind. Repentance, as related to positional justification is MENTAL. There is no PHYSICAL ACTION involved, which would denote "works". Specifically related to sin, man must undergo a fundamental change of understanding. Part of that is: Does sin exist? Is the world fallen? Do I have a sin nature? Am I a sinner? If I am a sinner, do I believe sin is bad, that I should desire to avoid it , and that I need to be saved from it. A Change of mind!!, about God, the World, and your place in His creation is required to arrive at a basic state of understanding regarding the gospel message according to 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4. Is Christ the 13th demi-God King of Vulcan who's come to save us from a Klingon invasion? Will Christ then take us to the 13th parallel universe, followed by the 13th planet, at which point men will live on the moon lemon, while the ladies live on the moon lime????! What LaserFalcon said is correct; "Repent = "change your mind" from not believing and "change your mind" to believing the gospel. Period." Although I would avoid using the word turn, as imo, that cause a lot of confusion which enables the bad habit of steering repentance into a "1st, one must physically turn from all sin (clean up your life and stop sinning) before they are allowed to arrive at faith". In other words, this redefines repentance in a way that front loads and back loads Justification with self righteous works of obedience; a way which states that God won't save people from drowning until THEY FIRST DRY themselves off, and then, afterwards, those same people must ALWAYS KEEP themselves dry. If people had that capacity no one would need a Savior in the first place.

Could it not also just be a change of mind from thinking that we can in any way contribute to our salvation (by somehow turning from all sin) to complete trust that Jesus paid for it all?
@freesalvation76 жыл бұрын
Adam Sadorus Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of heart that leads to a change in actions. This change involves both a turning from the darkness of sin and a turning to Christ who is the light of the world. Acts 26:18 "To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me." Repentance in the scripture is defined as a turning from all sin. Ezekiel 18:30 "..."Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin." 1 Thessalonians 1:9 "...ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;" Ezekiel 14:6 "...Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations." Repentance is a gracious free gift of God, and not works as some have erroneously concluded. Acts 5:31 "...for to GIVE repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins." 2 Timothy 2:25 "...if God peradventure will GIVE them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;" Acts 11:18 "...Then hath God also to the Gentiles GRANTED repentance unto life." Repentance and Faith are heads and tails of the same coin, you can't have one without the other, if a person says I don't believe in repenting of sins for salvation they don't have true faith, and are not trusting Christ alone. Acts 20:21 "Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ." Mark 1:15 "And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel." Because repentance is a free gift from God, Sinners have no excuse not to repent, no matter how enslaved they are to their sins, and no matter how impossible humanly speaking it is to turn from sin. When God commands The Impossible he makes it possible. Matthew 12:13 "Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other," Acts 17:30 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:" When God gives repentance the change of heart is so great that there are works that follow, these Works have nothing to do with our Salvation they are just an Evidence of it. Jonah 3:10 "And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not." Also some use the excuse not to repent of their sins because it says in the scripture God repented. However when it says God repented it doesn't mean that God changed his mind, because the Bible says that God cannot change, it simply means that God changed his course of action and God has the Sovereign right to do this. Malachi 3:6 "For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." Some erroneously teach that you only repent of one sin and that is the sin of unbelief however in the Book of Revelation we see that God expects repentance from all sin. Revelation 9:20-21 "And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts." Anyone who teaches that you can embrace all your sins and embrace Christ at the same time is teaching a lie. 2 Timothy 2:19 "Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." The best way to create false converts is the methodology of 1- 2- 3 repeat after me which teaches Lost Sinner's to honor God with their mouths while their heart is far from him. Matthew 15:8 "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me." Not once in the scripture do we ever see any of the prophets, Apostles, John the Baptist, or Jesus Christ ask a sinner to repeat a prayer after them. 1 Corinthians 3:6 "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase."

Adam Sadorus, yes we can contribute to our salvation. The apostle Peter commanded it. (Acts 2:40 "And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, SAVE YOURSELVES from this corrupt generation.") This verse is not teaching that we can save ourselves apart from God but that we must obey the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God requires from us obedience, this is our contribution in our own salvation. We must do something, we must take action on our belief by obeying the gospel. If we did nothing but believe our faith is dead. Faith by itself with no works is dead. A dead faith never saved anyone. (James 2:17 "Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.") Epheasians 2:9 ("not of works lest any man should boast.") The works in Epheasians 2:9 are meritorious works or trying to earn your salvation by keeping the law of Moses perfectly. This can't be done, no one is without sin. So James 2:17 and Epheasians 2:9 do not contradict each other. James is talking about works of obedience,just obeying what God commands. Epheasians 2:9 is talking about works of merit, trying to earn salvation by keeping the old law perfectly or thru good works. Gods grace thru our faith is the only way God saves us but Gods grace is conditional. To receive Gods grace as a gift we must have saving faith, saving faith is the type of faith mentioned by James in James 2:17 saving faith: Belief + obedience is what is required by God in order to receive His grace as a gift. This gift of grace is free to all who will believe and obey God. Sometimes gifts are free but there are still conditions that you have to follow in order to get the gift for free. Example a free car is being given away only condition is you have to sign up for it in order to be eligible. If a person refuses to obey the gospel then Gods grace is not going to remove their sins because its conditional. Faith alone is not taught in the new testament, it is condemned in James2

Jesus, Himself, said "stop sinning, or something worse may happen to us." The Scripture is loaded with commands to "turn from sin." And without works to prove our repentance, we are still on the "wide path that leads to destruction." kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJDLnoN9e8ymhK8

The problem is a difference is how sin is thought of. In the Western mind, sin is a thing, an noun. It's a state of being. In the Hebraic mind, though, sin is a behavior. It is transgressing the law as John tells us. It's not some wispy thinking or believing. To repent is not simply some coy "changing your mind to try to do better..or...something." It is a turning BACK to the character and traits of Yahweh as exemplified in the Torah. It's the same message Israel received over and over and, sadly, over again. Go back to doing what you ought. "If you love me, keep my commandments." The prodigal didn't simply say "Man, I screwed this. I'll have to straighten up." No, he went back home and put himself in submission to his father. He was willing to come home and follow the house rules. Christians can't even get all 10 of the Table(ts) of Contents (the 10 commandments) so they have to start there (and not just with NINE Of them).

The question is, "In Luke 13:1-5, What Did Jesus Mean By "Repent?"" The context of the passage always reveals how the term "repent" is being used, and can easily be determined whether it is applied to justification of life. God repented, does that mean He has sinned? I could repent concerning what cereal I want for breakfast, but it has nothing to do with whether I'm justified before God. In Acts 17:16-31 Paul is telling the Athenians of their need to repent because they were worshipping idols and didn't know the true God, or His Son Jesus, and therefore were in unbelief and condemned before God because they had not been justified by faith. Their change of thinking concerned what they needed to believe about Jesus. They needed to hear who He was and trust Him for the forgiveness of their sins in order to be justified through faith by God (Romans 3:19-28). Individuals are "made" righteous through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to clear scripture from Romans chapters 3-5, as well as other clear scripture throughout the bible. In Luke 13, Jesus knew the thoughts of the people. They believed the Galileans died because they had greater sin than their own. They had need to repent (change their thinking) from their self righteousness! They didn't understand who Jesus was, and they thought themselves righteous, just as many of the nation of Israel did because they were listening to the Pharisees teaching the law (Romans 10:1-4). Their pride was causing them to exalt themselves above those who they believed had greater sins. They believed themselves to be keeping the law just like the Pharisee in the parable from Luke 18:9-14. Many today have need to change their thinking in this way, because they believe themselves righteous, and therefore deny their unrighteousness. They believe themselves to be accepted because of their change of behavior, but Ephesians 1:6 shows our need to be "made accepted in the beloved" (made accepted through faith in Christ). Jesus came to save us from our sins, not to give us the power to save ourselves. We must humble ourselves and come to Christ to be forgiven of unrighteousness, not attempt to make ourselves righteous through the law. The only way possible to be justified before God is through faith in what Christ Jesus accomplished for us, not what we accomplish for Him. Until we humble ourselves becoming dependent on Him for forgiveness of sins, we have not possibly recognized our need of the work He did for us, and repented in the context of receiving "justification of life" (Romans 5:18-10). We either have not been saved, or have believed at some point in life, but now are under great deception of the truth of the gospel as was the case with many believers in the bible (Hebrews, Galatians, for example), having forgotten we were "purged of our old sins" (2 Peter 1:9). Do you believe others to be greater sinners than you? Jesus advised you to repent!

The problem is you dont understand the difference between the Moral Law of God & The Law of animal sacrifices for the atonement of sin. God NEVER said that the Moral Law was void. If that were true then you can be a Christian and a murderer or a Christian and a thief, liar, adulterer, etc, etc. Not to mention that you have to essentially ignore ALL of the Apostles. When you say "God repented, does that mean He has sinned?" No, God changed his mind, repented, about having created man. When Jesus Christ tells us to repent he is talking about sin. The word "Repent" isn't only EVER referenced to sin. It depends on the context. What is the passage talking about? If the passage is talking about sin...then repentance is referring to sin. This is all about basic reading comprehension. If you dont want to understand it's because you have a pretext or some preconceived idea for not understanding.

I like how this teacher chose his words carefully. It seems to me that many would make repentance a work out of a desire to lessen nominal Christians. Not caring too much that they are cheapening Grace and elevating man. Since the Gospel of John was written so that we may believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved John 20:31 and since John no where uses repentance (metanoia) then logically repentance is either not necessary for justification or it is synonymous with faith and belief (pisti) (pestevo). Repentance like this guy said is not the act of turning from sin for many reasons, one of which is because a person can turn from some sins and not have saving faith in Christ. So obviously repentance alone doesn't save. But what is the cry of the Reformation? Sola fide! Only Faith! So it tickles my funny bone that the hardest advocates for a works type repentance are often people advocating from a Reformed position. As of right now I am perfectly at peace with what this gentleman said in this clip. Personally I believe repentance unto life is synonymous with saving faith. However that repentance is not stopping all known sin! That repentance is not doing an about face from everything you know to be sin! That repentance is not an action anyone can do, that repentance is full agreement with God's word that I am a sinner and I agree with God that my sin is ugly and I am guilty before Him and I agree with Him that what He says is sin is sin but that due to His perfect sacrifice of love His Son paid my debt and I want to take my self or whatever other idol was king of my heart before and now I want King Jesus to reign in my heart, mind, thoughts, actions until there is no more me there it is only Christ in me! Blessings to any who read all this! No matter what anyone says. Romans 10:9 if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead you will be saved. Romans 10: 11, as the scriptures say no one who believes in Jesus will ever be put to Shane. If I was a pastor, which I am not, I would not preach repentance because too many people may stumble over how the term is understood today.

Luke 13:1-5 is very commonly abused and twisted by works based gospel salvation people to falsely teach that this passage is a salvation passage. They will teach that "repentance" which according to them is "turning from sins" as a requirement for eternal salvation. However, in the context of Luke 13:1-5 Jesus is talking about "repentance" which is turning from sin and wickedness to avoid disaster, and calamity in the form of PHYSICAL DEATH. The people that Jesus was speaking to were just as sinful and wicked as the Galileans and the 18 people who were killed when the tower in Siloam fell on them. Jesus was in essence saying that if the people He was speaking to did not "repent" which in this context is "turn from sin and wickedness", then they would suffer disaster and calamity in the form of PHYSICAL DEATH just like the Galileans and those 18 people in the city of Siloam. Jeremiah 18:6-11 and Jonah 3:8-10 are 2 good examples explaining the principle of Jesus's teaching in Luke 13:1-5. When people do wickedness and evil, then God will bring forth DISASTER, CALAMITY, and PHYSICAL DEATH as punishment. However, if people repent, that is, turn from their wickedness and evil, then God will change His mind and not bring about disaster, calamity, and physical death as punishment. Jeremiah 18:6-11 - 6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. 7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; 8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, TURN FROM THEIR EVIL, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. 9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; 10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them. 11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good. Jonah 3:8-10 - 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? 10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; AND GOD REPENTED OF THE EVIL, that he had said that he would do unto them; AND HE DID IT NOT.

If you believe Jesus is Lord, doesnt you automaticly repent then? I mean you can't believe Jesus is Lord without aggnolledging what you are, a sinner? I just ask because i know f.example Ray comfort say its not enough to believe in Jesus, you have to repent. I thougt to that repent mean change of mind, if so isnt what Ray comfort says wrong? Because if what he says is right, i would go to hell after i got saved, because i just knew one day who Jesus was and by that what i was, a sinner, a misrable human being, unholy. So i got baptised in His mighty name. But according to Ray if i died right after i would go to hell because i hadn't repented yet. This seems wrong to me because for me it was a process asking forgivness for my sins, that came more and more as i started to bear fruit. So what do you guys think? Im NOT saying that Ray comfort is a false prophet or something, but i dont feel completely at ease when he says you have to believe in Jesus BUT... I dont like that but.... Sorry for bad english.

If you accepted Jesus as you Lord and Saviour, there is NO but! You are saved and holy (by the grace of His blood that made you so). There is nothing that we can DO to be saved - it is a work that the Holy Spirit does in our hearts. All we can do is to ACCEPT his grace, like you did. This sentence (for me it was a process asking forgiveness for my sins, that came more and more as i started to bear fruit.) makes it crystal clear to me that you live in a state of repentance. Man cannot bear fruit, because we are all intrinsically bad, except when Jesus touches our lives - His touch urges us to bear fruit and to start hating the wrongs that we do, as much as He does! Jesus knows our hearts - He is not even remotely interested in our believing in Him - even the devil and evil spirits believe in Him - he wants us to LOVE Him and to ask Him to be Lord of our hearts, minds, souls and spirits. God bless on your journey with Jesus. I know He is excited about you!

What is with all these false teachers declaring that you do not need to repent of sin lol. Jesus said that the Father commands that all men repent! Look it up, Jesus must be the Lord of your life. That means denying yourself (action), picking up your cross (action), and following Him (action). Faith without works is Dead being alone… if you don't believe me, believe James. Or Paul when he talks of enduring until the end and not sinning and going back to what you were saved from. It is simple… most laodicean christians these days do not want to obey the Word of God, they just want the benefits of the kingdom without giving their life to Christ. It is simple.
