I made two versions of this video... the one you can all see here and another one, showing all her achievements in European, World - or Olympic Championships. After watching the first version, I decided not to upload it - my attention was withdrawn from the beautiful videos and I tried to read all the titles and years.... but I want people to witness how beautiful Elena Shoushounova was and what a great gymnast she was. So I thought.... I could write down.... the many, many medals she won during her competitive career in the mentioned competitions... European Championships 1985 held in Helsinki All Around European Champion Horse Vault European Champion Uneven Bars European Champion (tied with Maxi Gnauck from the GDR) Balance Beam Bronze Medalist Floor Exercise European Champion World Championships 1985 held in Montreal Team Gold Medal All Around World Champion (tied with her teammate Oksana Omelianchik) Horse Vault World Champion Balance Beam Bronze Medalist Floor Exercise Silver Medalist European Championships 1987 held in Moscow All Around Bronze Medalist Horse Vault European Champion World Championships 1987 held in Rotterdam Team Silver Medal All Around Silver Medalist Horse Vault World Champion Uneven Bars Bronze Medalist Balance Beam Silver Medalist Floor Exercise World Champion (tied with Daniela Silivas) Olympic Games 1988 held in Seoul Team Gold Medal All Around Olympic Champion Uneven Bars Bronze Medalist Balance Beam Silver Medalist In all those years, although I have opened my heart for other great gymnasts from all over the world... Elena Shoushounova was and is my most favorite female gymnast of all times. It is so sad, that she passed away so early... may her soul find a peaceful place and live forever... She was terrific on every apparatus. I especially adored her floor routines from 1987 and 1988. It's devastating she died so young.

@@Jajadore I was so shocked when I read the news... I called my brother immediately and we both couldn't believe it. Although he was more a Silivas fan (he had to be, since we divided the nations when we were young.... but that's another story) he was also very fond of Elena.... she didn't even reach her 50th birthday... that is so sad.

@@Jajadore ... and yes.... she had her ups and downs, but she proved, that she had not a weak event, like most gymnasts have.... some don't like the Balance Beam, some are so bad at Floor (especially the choreography), Uneven Bars is such a hard apparatus and some girls are bad at Horse Vault (like Daniela....), but Elena had so difficult routines on each event and won medals at every apparatus she touched... such a talented gymnast. 😊💚😀💜😏💛

Thank you so much... I am so glad, that she was the first gymnast that made a huge impact on me in 1985 and that I had the chance to watch her from afar.... She was such a great gymnast. I was a gymnast before, but watching her made me strive for the better. She will always be in my heart! I am happy, that there are so many other fans all around the world, who appreciate also her talent.

Ces jeunes filles prenaient des traitements pour retarder leur puberté. Les gymnastes avaient entre 14 et 15 ans et avaient une morphologie de fillettes de 10 à 11 ans.Ainsi, leur entraîneur pouvait exploiter au maximum leurs prouesses et les dressait comme des pouliches!!! Bien sur, cela ne diminue en aucun cas leur niveau de gymnastes.D'autres étaient affamées et battues quand leur pesée mecontentait ces abrutis de coach!!!😢😢😢😢

Ces traitements hormonaux leur étaient administrés malgré et elles et sans qu'elles soient informées. Quel gachis humain de jeunes vies pour la renommée du club ou de la fédération de gymnastique!!!!

Just absolutely loved her. Brilliant choreography, class, technically perfect and pure elegance with power. Back then the vault had no spring in it, the floor was nowhere near as sprung as now, landing areas were different, bars were thicker and closer together. Gymnastics now is all power, a lot of the elegance has gone and many routines are so very similar.

Gone too soon. So sad. The gymnasts of the 70's 80's and 90's had grace and artistry. They also perfected their movements and landed their jumps with precision. Now we see muscly gymnasts and it is all about power and the number of tumbles you can fit in. As dynamic as Simone Biles is, I don't see the straight legs and pointed feet that these balletic gymnasts had. She also puts so much power into her tumbling that she doesn't land her jumps securely at times. She often puts her foot out of the zone in the floor exercises and hops on her vaults. You remember the routines of the Russians and Romanians who combined daring with grace from decades ago but I don't think we will remember the routines of today's gymnasts in years to come.

I remember when I read the terrible news on the internet. I called my brother and told him about it. We both couldn't believe it. Now he is gone also... a little over 4 years now... he left this realm with only 44. I miss Elena, but I miss my little brother too. He was also a fan of Artistic Gymnastics as we knew it in the 80's We divided the nations... while I was cheering for the USSR he was cheering for Romania - but honestly - we both loved every gymnast from both countries.

I wish the ones in charge would turn back the wheels of time, to make the sport great again. But it won't happen. The magic in modern Gymnastics is gone. It is all about collecting points on technical perfect equipment. They should call it Acrobatic Gymnastics. I am glad, we have the chance in watching the old routines of long gone stars, who will never be forgotten in the golden era of Artistic Gymnastics.

Yelena Lvovna Shoushounova (1969-2018) Una gimnasta rusa, sin el abolengo Comaneci, la reina que cambio el rumbo de la gimnasia. Ni el automatismo de Simone Biles, la gran maquina de hacer gimnasia o la tragedia de Mujica. Es una gimnasta que demuestra lo que la disciplina física otorga al cuerpo humano, no hace drama emotivo ante una medalla, se mantiene neutra al igual que en su vida privada. When I was 20, I deemed 50 is quite old... now that I am 52 I have a different view on things. It was tragic, that she died from complications of pneumonia. The good thing is, that there are so many wonderful people around, remembering her for achievements in her sport and celebrating her life after all.

She really had a hard time. I read, that she pled for a short break after the Olympics Games to recover a little bit, but her request was denied by her coaches - so she retired completely from the sport. 😔

I always found her so beautiful!❤❤❤ Heartbroken when i heard the news she had passed away. I no longer enjoy womens gymnastics now. You cannot beat this era of these beautiful European athletes.

You know... I listen to this song (and other sad songs) quite often lately. I lost my little brother last year. He was only 44 and I am still suffering from the loss. People tell me, things will get better.... but that's not true. I miss him so bad...

Thanks for the magic Elana Shoushonova. You deserved a lot more that the Olympic officials allowed you. There is no excuse for an athlete “ limping “ on the run - up. Likewise the barrier for female gymnasts at Sydney should have been got right the first time. Full respect to all those who participate in such a demanding sport.
