BRAVO! Tribute!!! She carried GONE WITH THE WIND on her shoulders, the way ATLAS carried planet Earth. Her power was her femininity and womanliness, besides the obvious of acting craft and natural beauty. She brought English European elegance to Scarlett O'Hara, none who auditioned for the role had it. A iconic STAR.

I was so grateful to Ms. Leigh for the subtleties she brought to her performance as Scarlett O'Hara. In the hands of a lesser actress, the part could've simply devolved into a one dimensional interpretation of a purely selfish and irredeemable character. The novel was her Bible, and she prepared herself for each scene by informing herself of Scarlett's motivation and frame of mind behind the spoken dialogue. She was simply brilliant in the part.

I agree, Ms. Leigh is actually in a distant relative in my paternal English side family tree, my great grandfather a cousin of her mother Mary Gertrude; Never met her, my father had as a teen, said she was very funny and of course stunningly gorgeous. I was ten when she died, we lived in NY. Interesting to me that bipolar disorder also runs in my paternal side of the family. I did meet actress Julie Christie, out here in Santa Monica, CA, in 2003, I would say Ms.Christie would qualify for the second most beautiful actress of the twentieth century.

She was an accomplished Hollywood actress and won two Oscars in 1940 and in 1952. But the India born Vivien Leigh would be forever remember for her role as the vivacious spoilt Southern belle Scarlett O Hara in the Civil War epic "Gone With The Wind." She won the Oscar the same year she married Sir Laurence Olivier the love of her life.It was a tumultous twenty year marriage culminating in a divorce in 1961. Vivien Leigh was also an accomplished stage actress and she and Olivier toured Australia many times. Another Oscar was in 1952 for her role as Blanche de Dubious in "A Street Car Name Desired". There after Vivien Leigh Hollywood career were ups and downs. Her death in 1967 at the age of 53 shocked the world.But then Vivien is Scarlett and Scarlett is Vivien.

Vivien Leigh double Oscar winner and multiple winner of The New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress is widely considered by motion picture historians and critics as the greatest actress in the English language of three decades 1938-1967; in addition won many acting awards on the British stage in plays and won The Broadway Tony award for best actress in 1963.

@@davidcopson5800 she was in Waterloo bridge (1937) opposite Robert Taylor , which I loved her in. Vivien Leighs been in films since 1933 , her first leading role opposite Sir Laurence Oliver who she later married in 1940. Vivien defined the word beautiful plus she was a great actress. It's a pity she dièd too young at age 53. She once said that she'd rather have a short life with Laurence, than a long life without him. Sadly she got her wish., poor thing. R.I.P. ❤

This is quite lovely. Thank you for the post. It's really quite challenging to come up with a list of the great screen beauties of this era...of course Vivien Leigh...Elizabeth Taylor, Hedy Lamarr, Susan Hayward, Maureen O'Hara, Ava Gardner, Lucille Ball, Katharine Hepburn, Greer Garson, Myrna Loy, Gene Tierney...all so stunning in their own, unique way.

Gone with the wind depicted the whole gamut of human emotions and Vivien almost born for the part of Scarlet to portray them. Captivating. . But I am saddened that in all of the photographs I cannot see one where Olivier is looking at her with love in his eyes. Mostly an almost brief acknowledgement of her presence. Sorry, that’s how I see it but Vivien was just lovely and a superb actress. Together with Clarke Gable they were just magic in the film. To watch the film again would be torment, to experience those deep emotions over again, no, I’ll just live with the beautiful memory.

I have loved Vivien since i was a young girl. Not only was she probably the most beautiful women to have ever lived but also one of, if not the greatest actress to have ever walked this earth. It's so sad that her life was so short though. As a person who finally gave up smoking after 30+ years, i blame cigarettes for taking Vivian away so young. Those things do horrible things to our bodies. Believe me, i know. The footage of the last years of her life, she looked older than she was. She only lived to be 53 but looked to be in her 60's at least. I honestly forgot she died so young until i googled her recently. So the way i see it.. If you need a reason to stop smoking, besides the fact that dying sucks.. Vivian's very short life is a perfect reason. Yes she had other problems but her rapid aging was mostly due to smoking. It's honestly one of the many reasons i finally quit. If cigarettes can do that to her, the most gorgeous woman in the world, i don't stand a chance... 😢
@terrihilder8217
@terrihilder8217 3 жыл бұрын
I pretty much agree. Smoking really did a number on a lot of the Golden age actors and actresses. My goodness, for example Clark Gable passed at 59 but looks a good ten years older. He was also a heavy smoker. Don't think the booze helped their health either. Gene Tierney had a bad case of emphysema because of cigarettes.

Why does my heart ache whenever I watch Vivien Leigh in her movies or her images? Is it because I saw her for the first time in Gone with the Wind with my late mother? Or when I watched the Waterloo Bridge, again with my beautiful mother as a teenage boy. She was the most delicately beautiful lady who ever graced the Silver screen. Her beauty is unmatched even today. Vivien ruined any chance of me finding my true love really because she set the standards for women so high, I could not find anyone who could match her in my life. She was a Goddess in human form, if ever there was one.
