John Farnham’s longtime manager and Australian music industry icon Glenn Wheatley died on Tuesday the 1st of February at the age of 74, after a battle with Covid-19. Wheatley had been in the music industry for more than 50 years.
He started out as a musician playing bass in 1960s rock band The Masters Apprentices, with hits such as "Because I Love You" and "Turn Up Your Radio", and was responsible for reinvigorating Farnham's career as well as discovering Delta Goodrem. It was under Wheatley's guidance that Farnham released the hugely successful single "You're the Voice" in 1986, as well as the "comeback" album "Whispering Jack". It is Farnham's most popular album and remains the highest-selling album in Australia by an Australian artist.
I temporarily shelved my next video plan as the news regarding Glenn's death became public. I wanted to create a tribute piece, not just to honour the life and legacy of Glenn, but his amazing "dream team" partnership - both personally and professionally - with John. I wanted to acknowledge the shock and sadness that we're all feeling, but also to celebrate his life of extraordinary achievements.
I've put this compilation together in the space of one day, so I apologise if it appears (at times) a little rushed or unpolished. This is a personal tribute to a man who obviously loved John as a friend and colleague alike. I wanted to capture his devotion, loyalty and enthusiasm for John and his unquestionable talent. Hopefully you can all have a smile and a chuckle along the way as well - that was certainly my intention.
RIP Glenn. You were an icon and an inspiration. We wouldn't have such wonderful memories without the unrivaled legacy that you and John have created... together!! We'll miss you dearly, mate.
