I'm surprised nobody mentioned The Final Cut - Pink Floyd. This is pretty much a Roger Waters solo album with little contribution from the rest of the band.

To be fair Momentary Lapse of Reason would have to get mentioned in the same breath. Actually since MLOR is more so David & session musicians, as well as him needing outside help to write it, I would argue that it's even less of a Pink Floyd album than The Final Cut.

One band for me. T.S.O.L. (The Sound of Liberty) started off as a hard core punk band. After a few member changes. They involve into a hair metal band. When that run was over & the original band members reunited. The band went back to playing hard core punk.

There are some good songs on The Doors Full Circle and Other Voices, Robby Krieger actually wrote some of their best songs when Jim was in the band and his and Ray Manzarek’s vocals on those two albums aren’t bad at all, it’s just that they were filling the shoes of Jim Morrison, gut taking those albums on their own I think they are decent albums.

The band Stryper came out with and album called reborn. It was basically a Michael Sweet album. He had it mostly done. He just had Ox fox just add his guitar parts and made it a Stryper album. Michael has since released his version a few years ago as it was entended just adding a few more solos and a few vocal parts. He renamed it reborn again.

The Endless River was released as a favor to the late Richard Wright. He always wanted those Division Bell outtakes made public. So Dave made four suites out of it to make it work as well as he could, adding some later overdubs with a new song at the end. I feel considering what it is, a kind of epilogue/exit music to the band's career, it works better than it should.

I must admit, however, that I'm a bit put off with Martin showing off all of these autographs. Did he actually take all of these albums to get signed when meeting these musicians, like a school girl? Should I be impressed? They're only people and scribble, Martin.

Demolition Hammer [Thrash] - Time Bomb. It was truly never meant to be under the Demolition Hammer name. The band started writing new material around the time Vinny Daze and James Reilly left the band, and the sound started shifting to a more modern (90s) thrash sound as heard on the 1993 Demo/Time Bomb Sessions (the songs exist on KZbin called "Test" and "Corporal Punishment"). The band felt that the change in sound "wasn't Demolition Hammer" so therefore were hoping to release the material that they had been working on under a different band name but the label wouldn't release it unless it was under the Demolition Hammer name. They were stuck with either not releasing the material, or going ahead and releasing the material under the name because you don't wanna just not release your work. Whenever the subject of "bad albums by good bands", "bands who changed their sound", "thrash bands selling out", or anything related to these topics are being talked about and Demolition Hammer/Time Bomb gets brought up, I always try my best to bring the story to light. I either don't include the band/album, or I do include the band/album but with an asterisk due to the circumstances, knowing roughly the bands wishes, and it not being the fault of the band. As far as what I think of the album on it's own, it's decent 90s thrash/post-thrash.

Coroner - Coroner (1995) is an odd duck. They had already broken up but were contractually obligated to put out one more release, so they culled together what was basically partially a greatest hits compilation containing some songs from each of their previous studio albums (most of which weren't really the "hits"), along with about 25-30 minutes of brand-new material, a cover, a live cut, and a bizarre electronic remix. If the original tracks were just released on their own (maybe with the cover thrown in since they had a habit of ending albums with those), I believe they would have worked well as either a long EP or a short LP instead of a weird half-comp. I I think it would have made a fitting swansong for them had it been an "official" release, especially with the self-titleage and the distorted band photo they used as cover art

Speaking of that Humble Pie album (Back on Track), only Greg Ridley (bass) and Jerry Shirley (drums) were classic members. The big puzzlement is that in the same year this was released, Greg, Jerry, Peter Frampton and Clem Clempson performed several tunes live for the Steve Marriott Memorial concert (and they were GREAT). They looked like they were enjoying themselves, so why didn't they plan a short tour and why didn't they get together and do an album???

I'm surprised you didn't mention Blue Oyster Cult - Imaginos. This was originally supposed to be an Albert Bouchard solo album, but ended up being a BOC album. All of the backing tracks were played by studio musicians. Buck and Eric are featured on lead vocals and Buck plays guitar on only a few songs. Albert's role was diminished from doing all of the lead vocals to singing backing vocals and a few sporadic lead vocals and some rhythm guitar. Joe Bouchard's original piano parts and vocals were supposedly replaced. Allen Lanier is not present at all.

Danzig-Blackacidevil This album was a complete change in sound and had all different members also. Although it doesn't fit with the other albums I do enjoy it. SOiL/Drowning Pool Ryan McCombs has fronted these bands at various times over the last 20+ years. The SOiL albums with AJ Cavalier are good (especially True Self) but they just don't sound like SOiL. Drowning Pool has had numerous singers over the years but McCombs sounds like the best fit for the band outside of Dave Williams who passed away. Gorgeous Frankenstein/Doyle GF was a short-lived version of the Doyle band. I saw them twice. Goolsby of Blitzkid was the singer but he did not appear on the album. They did songs from the GF album as well as Graves era Misfits material. I've also seen the Doyle band twice. They have a couple albums and have only done original material live in my experience. There is quite a revolving door of members.

Popoff and Pardo are it again concluding their two-part series on (to paraphrase) whose album is it despite the artist shown on the cover. The Doors albums without Jim Morrison were the first example that came to mind on reading the title of this and hearing Martin start. Glad to see him include those. Watching these two episodes made me think about the whole Neil Young With Crazy Horse discography and people's apparent thinking that these are all just Neil Young albums. Perhaps they are though Crazy Horse has albums of their own and those are not assumed to be Neil's catalogue. Some examples include Everybody Know This Is Nowhere, Rust Never Sleeps, and Ragged Glory. The albums generally are co-billed as something along the lines of "Neil Young With Crazy Horse" but should they just be Neil Young albums or not? In any event, obviously enjoyed the episode as Pete and Martin somehow make me re-think what is often thought to be known. Thanks once again, gents. There ya go!

An excellent discussion. Good to see the Ram Jam albums getting credit again. Does any one else agree with me that the (still great) second album "Portrait..." is pressed speeded up from how it was recorded? I think this accounts for the tight, intricate guitar, and especially bass, work. Should the various permutations of the Great White covers of Led Zeppelin songs be included in their catalogue? Posthumous Hendrix in the West was not in Pete's list. Probably his best live album. Frequently claimed to have the best version of the oft recorded Red House. The most collectible Freedom album is the last on Vertigo swirl - Freedom is More than a Word. Original currently asking over $500, unless you consider Neurosubianco, possibly their first, to be a true Freedom album.

Krokus' "Headhunters" , where they changed from the AC/DC groove to a heavy metal sound. Great album. Judas Priest's " Screaming for Vengeance ", maybe because of a higher-end production, sounds so much heavier than any previous release. There are a ton of bands that could seem to fall into these catagories but the truth is after the first two or three albums just run out of good songs. I am always amazed at bands like Priest or Maiden who can actually get heavier as they age, compared to most that tend to soften.

Martin, I love the Humble Pie Back On Track album too. Unfortunately I got rid of it several years ago and it's hard to find now at a reasonable price. I got to copy Real Thing from KZbin and that's my favorite cut. Hope the Humble Pie Legacy thing works out.

Martin of all books you’ve written, were there any bands you wrote about that you weren’t necessarily a big fan of at the beginning, but became one while writing and doing research for the book? Also, we’re there any bands that you liked less after researching and writing a book?

A singer will make or break a band. Honourable mention to The Sensational Alex Harvey Band album 'Fourplay' from '77, recorded without Alex Harvey during his year hiatus. Surprised no mention of the obvious, Metallica. They certainly changed their whole aesthetic & mindset by 'Load'. To add to Pink Floyd, 'The Final Cut' was technically a Roger Waters solo album, while it's follow-up 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason' was a David Gilmour solo album. Frank Zappa's post-humous catalogue situation is similar to Jimi Hendrix, hard to know whether to include compilation albums of alternative versions of previously released material, even if they are official.

For those of us of who are a tad older, the In Name Only phase of Tull started with Songs from the Wood. Mostly the old band, elements of the old Tull were still there, and they'd done folky stuff before, but more in the acoustic/singer-songwriter mould, not the Steeleye Span/Fairport Convention leanings like they had here. Despite some strong material it wasn't what we wanted from JT.

They’re right about “A”, though. Jethro Tull effectively ceased to be a band after “Stormwatch”, where Ian basically fired everyone. It became his backing band after that (he even pretty much fired Martin Barre, eventually)

Pink Floyd's Endless River was released after Richard Wright's death as a supposed tribute to him. It was bits and pieces of music he wrote and recorded. It would have been a much better tribute, and better album, if Gilmour and Mason had developed the themes into full songs.

The Beatles have a lot in terms of chopped up music. The US versions of the early albums. I love the Magical Mystery Tour album because it finds a home for Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane somewhere other than a bog standard compilation and I love the album overall, but it's an EP and some other stuff thrown together. Should Let It Be considered their penultimate or final album, did they have any say in it, the awful mess Phil Spector made of it, where does Let It Be ... Naked fit in? Why the sort version of Get back? Those early mono albums re-released in stereo at the time, then re-released later in mono, which ones count? Yellow Submarine - original songs, old songs, orchestral pieces, does it count? Giles Martin remixes. Do The Rutles albums count?
@wolf1977
@wolf1977 Жыл бұрын
Ditto with the comps The Beatles 1962-1966 & 1967-1970 (the Red & Blue albums) - some of my earliest Beatles albums (I think). To me Yellow Submarine 'counts' but as more of a 'specialty/novelty' album although it does contain "Only A Northern Song" & "Hey Bulldog", "It's All Too Much" & the wonderful "All You Need Is Love". I totally discount side 2/the film score - not into such things. Really similar to Help! 4 years earlier that's tied to a film & is a mix of (great) songs plus instrumental movie tracks...I generally don't go for remixes (remasters yes)

Really solo albums released under the band's name: Floyd, Graham Parker, Tull (Zealot Gene/RökFlöte), Sabbath, GBV, The Clash (Cut The Crap), 10cc (MirrorMirror), ELO (Zoom), Tears For Fears, Velvet Underground (Squeeze), Foo Fighters (s/t), early Garcia solo (with Kreutzman & Hunter) and Bob Weir (with Garcia/Godchaux/Lesh/Kreutzmann = Dead...And the reverse: Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad. Becker plays on it & produced, the rest are studio guys. Isn't that the SD 'formula'? Some early Porcupine Tree (when they really weren't a band yet & it's mostly all Wilson). Graham Parker's The Up Escalator - really a Rumours album. Albums with different mysical styles? I actually wouldn't include those under this subject - sure they sounded different from what the bands' fans were used to hearing but to me that's a positive thing. Bands that stagnate die (eventually), plus I really like it when music 'evolves' (and surprises). This episode's title - "In Name Only" Albums - I think suggests a somewhat negative connotation to it & again to me bands that offer different musical styles are a positive. A few major examples: 80's Rush, Deep Purple's Come Taste The Band, The James Gang post-Walsh, 60's Bee Gees, Zep's In Through The Out Door (possibly my fave LZ album), The Kinks evolving from a singles band to a concept album group, same with The Who evolution from a cover/mod band. Even The Beatles' 60's progression from a skiffle-influenced vocal pop band to making stuff like Sgt Pepper's & The White Album (same with 60's Beach Boys). Fleetwood Mac post-Green, and again starting with Buckingham/Nicks. I'm totally OK with calling Endless Wire a Who album, the band's leader/main songwriter/guitarist & the frontman singer are on it. Also because I like it quite a bit. I think there's a (much) better argument for calling some solo Townshend projects Who albums...I could do without most X-mas albums (and I like Christmas). I think many would also like to discount covers albums - I'm OK with them depending on the exact material & execution. Something new needs to be brought to older classics, otherwise why bother. And pick good tunes to begin with...As a rule adding orchestration to rock bands' tunes is a no-go for me (with exceptions)...Once again don't quite get some of Martin's hate towards a particular album - I like PF's The Endless River (not so much the more ambient tracks). I was also honestly a little lost during his AC/DC discussion - different track listings & releases by country are pretty common. But good points about Coverdale/Whitesnake, I'd maybe throw Roine Stolt's The Flower King (from 1994) into the mix...I can do without later-period Queen too (especially post-Freddie), too great of a band for all that...Thank God for posthumous album releases - look no further than Jimi & The Beatles (posthumous as in a band context). The Beatles 1962-1966 & 1967-1970, Let It Be, Hey Jude. I have at least 4 to 5 times as many post-1970 Hendrix releases as were on Pete's list & frankly that's nothing compared to what's available out there. Sure some of it's barely Hendrix, or has really poor sound, but a lot of it's also great & contains some wonderful nuggets...Yes without Howe? No problem for me, I love the early Banks stuff as well as 80's Rabin
