O. Henry created the Cisco Kid character in this short story, “The Caballero’s Way”, published in 1907. For the next 87 years, O. Henry's creation inspired a plethora of Cisco Kid comic books, radio and television shows, and films, the latest of which was a 1994 movie starring Jimmy Smith and Cheech Moran.
In "The Caballero's Way," O. Henry's Cisco Kid is a 25-year-old murderous desperado terrorizing the Texas-Mexico border country. A sociopath, he kills for sport and is responsible for at least eighteen deaths. The American media quickly transformed the Cisco Kid into a heroic Mexican caballero, the Robin Hood of the Old West, stealing from the rich, re-distributing the wealth to poor campesinos, and seducing women.
