In's & Out's of BUYING & INSTALLING New Motorhome Tires

New tires for a motorhome is a big expense. There are other details you should consider while your at it. Stressed supply chain makes things difficult.
Even though I could have gotten more life out of the tires, being a full timer, I need good tires that I can rely on going forward in the future. I wanted to change them out now while I still could. With inflation now on rise and supply chains already stressed, I didn’t want to wait another 6 months to a year and then deal with getting new tires, even if I could find them. I’m already seeing and hearing reports from many RVer’s around the country, that many tires now are hard to find, back ordered for weeks/months and that’s if you can find them at all. And from what I’m seeing, it’s only going to get worse.
With my past experience with Toyo tires, I decided to go with M122 all the way around. They are a wider tire than the Michelin 235 x 80R22.5 XRV tires that comes standard on many Class A motorhomes or even the M154 Toyo that some Class A owners go with for a Michelin replacement. Even though the M154 are a little wider, I like the M122 because they’re even a little more wider. I like more meat on the road. Even though there are wider than the above two tires, they still allow enough clearance between the dually’s to keep the tires cool. Don't go any thicker on the dually’s. It will prevent tires to proper cool. In the past 4.5 years with my rear Toyo’s, my TPMS always showed those tires running right around 105º or so, and that’s in the summer with 90psi. They’re a terrific tire IMO.
When you install new tires, it takes about 1K-2K miles or so for them to really settle in and handle their best. They’re new, the tread is still soft & the tires have never been warmed up with regular driving. As you drive more miles they will perform better.
My list I covered for my tire installer:
• Use two jacks under both axles, not one
• Don’t forget that I have some dummy lug nuts on all outside rim covers
• On the lug nuts themselves, I have 3 tapered lugs on each rim to insure the rims centered before the other lugs are put on - Once he takes off all the lug nuts I want to mark all 12 of them myself and then I’ll give them back to you.
Please be sure the install guy puts on the tapered lug nuts first before the others
• When you remove all the old stainless steel stems and extensions please give me the old ones back. I have a YT channel and lots of my fans have been looking forward to me a video on this tire replacement. So I want to cover these in that video. I’ve marked all the old ones. Please give me all the old ones
• Install all new stainless steel stems and the two extensions
• Have inside dually extension made 1” shorter than the old ones so my rim rubber grommet inserts will fit properly
• Have inside dually wheels rotated so that both stems are close together…..one hole off
• Road Force balance all new tires and reinstall the Centramatic rings
• Air up new tires to 90psi
It took Southern Tire 3wks. to get these tires and they installed Dill Stainless Stems and Extensions

A little more detail… The rubber grommets I showed to hold the extensions firmly in place are hard to find. BUT....I finally have them in my Amazon Store in the "Tire, Engine & Chassis Care" category. And I highly recommend installing Dill Stainless Stems and Extensions that you can get from the tire shop. They'll size them to the exact length you need. These grommets in my store are a little pricey but well worth the money. They also come with a pair of extensions that will probably be the wrong size for your needs. Just don’t use them. Simply press these tough rubber grommets into the holes on your outside dually’s rim, the extension goes through them, then attach your TPMS sensor. Don’t put any type of lubricant on the grommets before you press them in. You want them to press in tight. If you're not going to Road Force Balance your tires OR run Centramatic Rings then the standard position for your stems on the rear dually's is 180º opposite of each other. Not side-by-side like I did mine. There is no one part number for Centramatic Rings. The ones you need will depend on the type of hubs you have, bolt pattern and the year and model of your RV. It was time to re-tire my coach, so changed the Michelins to 6 new M154 Toyos just last Monday. Left on our winter trip Thursday, and I'm very satisfied with the handling very well. Thanks for the video. I have 2 Toyo's on the front of my MH and I like them. They are nearing the end of their life. On the rear I have 3 Goodyear and 1 Yokohama. I have learned that many tire stores do not handle 22.5" tires! So I have had problems finding tires to fit. But recently I found a tire shop near my house that stocks Toyos so I will probably go there when its time to buy tires.

Great video! I bought Toyo M154 2 yrs ago, they are great! I've read nothing but good stuff about them. When first shopping, I priced them online to be delivered but not one place would guarantee the date to be newer than 2 years! Unacceptable! So I called around local and found a tire shop that called their warehouse to get me dates that put the tires at 5-6 months old and they weren't much more money than online. Like you, I'd rather pay a little more and know what I'm getting. I do wish I bought those balancing plates (I will next time), not sure that these little beads do anything at all but I don't have shaking issues. If I need to replace one tire the balancing beads in the old tire are tossed away with the tire, it was my first time buying tires for my RV so I'll chalk it up to live and learn. Love the Toyo ride and price. So much cheaper than Michelin.

Thanks for all the info, picking up our new 2023 Forest River XLR Boost 21XLRX tomorrow. I am a retired truck driver of close to 25 years and the #1 cost is fuel and the 2nd biggest expense are tires. I owned several trucks in my career and the biggest thing I learned was to get yourself into a routine of checking your rig daily. Check your tires and your oil every time you get fuel and when you do stop for any reason always do a walk around, and unlike driving a big rig where you are on a schedule my RV days will be at a much slower pace. For added protection and a little cold, get a foot of 3/8 or 1/2 inch fuel hose, cut to fit and sliced in half and zip tie

Excellent information. I have a metal extension on my dual tires and I can't get a TMPS sensor to hold air on that extension. just on one side. I don't know why, I addressed it with the tire shop and they couldn't figure it out either so I just left one of the TPMS sensors off and I just manually check it.

This video hit me real close to home! Our 2016 Bago Adventurer 38Q is in need of 4 rear tires now. I've run the dickens out of the original Michelins, they have 60k miles on them- still not worn but definitely aging out. I'm getting really spooked about using the rig until I get new ones as I approach 7 yrs(2015 stamped from factory). I looked at Toyo 122's but there was about a 4 mile speed difference which is a bit much for me. I am going through much of the same issues you identify. Last yr I put 2 new Toyo 154's on the front and I love them. So I want to put 4 Toyo 154's on the rear. I have used Southern also and they do good work. My big issue is going to be extensions on the inner duallies. The rig came from the factory with flex extensions which I absolutely hate! They are difficult to check pressure and one is leaking. I want to go with a solid metal extension set up when I change. I have had very good experience with bead balance and have had no problems with the TPMs sensors. An excellent video. Thanks Martin. (PS notice that notorious sweet aroma LOL provided by Toyo??? We get a good laugh each time we go by the rig)

Ya know, I've heard some people mention about this so called "smell" of new Toyo tires. I've owned several sets on other vehicles and now 2 sets on our coach and have NEVER experienced this smell. EDIT: I forgot to address your speed difference comment. Ya mine is off 2mph but I just don't worry about it. Joanie is always monitoring my speed on the GPS and I'm watching my speedometer. If I want to run at 65mph I read 67 on the both the GPS and on my dash. As I decrease speed to say 35 or 40mph it drops to 1mph. To me it's just not a big deal. When I had my Ford Truck, I raised it up, put gig Toyo's and rims on it and there was about 6mph difference. That was a bit much. So I bought a-similar unit to 5 Star tune-and upload a speed fix according to the size tires I had. It cost me I think about $100 or so. But that ended up changing the code in my PCM and that became a problem when I had to take it to Ford for some recall stuff. Then I wish I hadn't done that. So not doing that ever again.

Hey guys Vinnie & Joni from Florida! News on our RV. Supposedly we're going to get it back this week! 6 new tires and all the repairs are going to be finished this week. Plus a roof check. . . Now we'll get to use all the updates and upgrades we did before we went to the keys earlier this yr. The tires we went with are "E" rated Firestones. More than enough for our rig. One thing I'd like to add to your video. When I had my blowout. The closest tire place was a Firestone store. They had 2 tires that were what I wanted. BUT, they couldn't lift the RV. So, we had to run down to a semi truck shop. They could lift it, BUT, they weren't equipped to mount the tires. . . So, I had to buy the tires at Firestone, then, run down to the semi shop and have them take my rims off and run me and my tires and rims back to Firestone to have them mounted. Then run back to the semi truck shop and have them remount the wheels back on the RV. What a cluster F. . . Good thing is I will now know the history of these new tires. My tires were about 2 yrs out from being to old. But I had 1 bad tire. And just thought it was out of balance. I was wrong. I had a bad tire. Thank God the blowout didn't do any body damage. The blowout took out my black water tank and mud flap bracket and mud flap. It also took off the tailpipe. As well as damaging a plastic fender flare. No body damage. Slam jam took my tire out. Shortly after I hit a joint going through a large city. I noticed my RV developed a slight shake. Within seconds it shook hard a few times and blew up. It was very loud and luckily it was a inside rear. So it was easy to control. And I could still drive it. So that's my story. We can't wait to get it back. Great video again!! I put toyos on s 35 Damon last summer they were $2700 total I thought that was too much $ but tires were getting hard to find . I took off Michelins I drove better before . I did lower psi to 100 and 90 and they are better now . My neighbor was mad because I didn't keep the old ones ,he wanted them for the cheater axels on his dump truck .

Martin. Excellent video and a lot of great ideas. One thing about Michelin’s .... you can have side wall cracking, front tires that are not wearing well do to alignment issues, a rear inside tire flat and still go down the road without having a blowout. I’m curious if Michelin & Toyo were the same price what would you buy? Thanks guys, have a great week!

I was going to mention that but decided not to because then the video would of became a tire review video and could start a comment war concerning those who own Mich's. This was not a tire review but simply my choice of tires and all what to look for and to do when installing new tires. 👍

The tires were eleven years old and beat up but still getting me down the road in 40 ft RV. Looking back it was dumb but I was young, dumb and thought I new it all. 😂 In closing I never had a blow out with that particular set or all the sets we’ve had RVing for 53 years something no one wants to experience. From that point on I was Michelin man for life. Today we take care of our tires and run them for seven years with no cracking, dry rot or any issues. There’s a few things you mentioned that we will incorporate on the next set. Thanks for that 👍🏼

One thing you don’t know is the fact that the tire shop always overtighen the lug nuts, they use that monster air wrench and over due it. Then they check with the torque wrench which in most cases is useless because it’s too tight,very dangerous because now you stretch the lugs and increase the chance of breakage. Tip from all my days of trucking, heads up folks

answered asks, "Why?", again. Unfortunately, I have a little too much time on my hands, my RV is in the shop getting Kingpin bushings replaced, should have it back this week. Of course, it is now too cold for me to do many of the great projects outlined in Martin's videos. I do still have things that I need to do on the inside so that should keep me busy for a bit. Thank you for all the great information I wish you had been around when I got my first motorhome., My 2018 Thor ACE came with the braided Stainless-steel extensions that attach to the center hub on the rear wheels. This arrangement certainly makes checking the tire inflation easy. When I do replace the tires, I should replace these extensions. The question in my mind is whether I should keep this same sort of extension when I do get new tires. I know some people simply do not like this type of extension. And, Years ago I have had an issue with one of these leaking that caused a tire failure. The problem was caused by overtightening the connection to the tire valve stem causing the o ring to be pushed out of place. That could also happen with a rigid extension as well.

Ya it could happen BUT it shouldn't with an experienced tire guy. Those extension should be hand tightened first and then about a 1/3 turn with a wrench. No more.

I don't carry a spare and most people who have big rigs don't either. To heavy, to big, takes up to much of your CCC and you're still going to need all the tools and jacks to change it. Those rims are torqued to 450' lbs. Just get a good road side service plan. I use Coachnet.

Martin, another well done video. F/U with regards to mileage ratings. Not being a full timer, what sort of mileage rating should be considered? Knowing replacements recommended at 5yrs, and say one only puts about 12K miles on over about 2.5yrs, what would be recommendation. Told wife other day that I had been thinking about looking for new tires as ours is about 4yrs in on DOT. We have the stock wheels on our 18 WB Vista 29VE, so the wheel covers are aluminum w/chrome finish, and the holes are those large oblong shape. Extenders that are on wheels, since we bought the MH used in 19, are those flexible reinforced stainless. The valve stems are solid though. Thank goodness, and knock on wood, they haven’t leaked yet. Our coach also has the Michelins, and suspect we’ll be looking for Toyo’s as well; used Toyo tires many years ago when I was a teenager riding motorcycles. I digressed🙂. Like to hear from you about mileage rating, as you know that too could be a factor for some of us who don’t get out as much as others. Thanks again.

Mileage rating doesn't count. Sort of. The more you run your tires the better it is for them. The constant heating and cooling of the tires while driving and sitting helps them stay healthy. Tires that aren't used often isn't good. That's why mileage doesn't really count. You could put 6K miles on it in 6 months and then it sits for 6 months. If you put low mileage every year, that usually means it sits a lot. Tires don't like that. Tires on a MH will almost always date out before they even begin to look like they need replacing. But there are so many other things that contribute to good tire health. Like proper balancing, front end alignment, proper PSI according to your weight, road conditions, keeping them out of the sun and so on. So IMO without knowing how you care for your tires, in your case with 12K miles in about 2.5yrs is below normal use for most MH's. Or at least full timing MH's. If you just use your MH periodically, then your tires are getting used even less than normal. So my recommendation would be-with all other things I mentioned above being in good working order-you should be able to go 5 probably 6 years on those tires then change them out. I know some folks go longer than that but I would not. Better to be safe then sorry.

I do need to do as you suggested in another video and drive coach every couple of weeks or so to help avoid flat spotting, and cracking. The thing I was trying to get across, was assuming there’s a significant disparity between say a 35K and 65K mile tire, wouldn’t it be prudent to consider the lower mileage tires for folks that don’t put a lot of miles on coach each year? My concern with the tires on my 1981 c class. The seller (of the RV) said the tires are new and they look new, but the dates are about 10 years old. I asked a local tire shop about this and he said he would take a look at them for me.

Hi Martin, where did you purchase your (conical) tapered seat lug nuts? I called Dorman Mfg. and they only recommend the factory 2 piece lug nuts stating that the rim would also have to be machined to match the lug nut taper. Mark

When I replaced my rear dually's in June of 2017, I had Southern Tire purchase and install self centering lug nuts on all 4 rims for a total of 12 @ $10.ea., so I don't know where they got them nor the Mfg. There was no machining the rims. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I do not like my wheel covers, similar to yours but all lnuts are dummies (came with SUNSEEKER Class C). I don’t put them on because tpms valves do not extend enough to easily check tire pressure which always reads differently then manual check. Guess that’s in another video lol. Valve stems are supposed to be oriented 180 degrees apart on dually tires, otherwise the tire will be out of balance.

Ya, I could of done that but then what am I going to do with 5yr. old tires when I'm in Willis, Tx for another week before I head south for the winter? I have no way to transport them, no way to store them, no way to move them to sell, or hassle with posting ads and it's just to big of a hassle IMO. I did ask them about a credit. Not only this time but back when I got my 4 rear Toyo's back when. They don't take them in on credit. And they're not going to resell them at $200 a piece when brand new ones only cost about $79 bucks or so more. MAYBE $50 a piece at this age on a good day. I know some tire companies do a credit thing sometimes, but not these guys. I think it's a sign of the times and these current conditions. They might sell them again to maybe a farmer, a local friend or somebody else but in reality...since they said they don't do that....I don't care. Thanks martin for another great video! My new 2022 Thor Hurricane didn't come with valve stem extensions on the rear dually's, so I want to install them to make checking and adding air easier. My rig came with 22.5" Alcoa wheels, so I purchased Alcoa 5-1/2" valve extensions and the 2" rubber grommets for them. The issue I found was that the inner rear dually wheel valve stems don't point directly out through the 2" hand holes, but appear to be aimed more towards the inner center edge of the hand holes, so this issue is stopping me from simply screwing them in like the directions say to do. I was told that I may be able to simply bend them a little to get them aligned properly, but I'm not sure if this will work or not. have you heard of this issue before?

Yes this is common. Each extension is straight. It attaches to the curved stem from the inner rim. When installing extensions that curved stem usually needs two or three attempts to bend it just right so that the extension comes out centered thru the hole on the outside rim hole and the grommet will hold it centered. In addition to this, the installer has to determine the proper length of extensions that will achieve this goal. 5.5" extensions MAY work with your application or it may not. That's why it has to be measured and installed then checked before they button everything up. I don't know if you purchased the ALCOA extensions and grommets thru my Amazon Store or not, but I made note of this in the description of the grommets and the type of extensions I recommend. This info was also duplicated in the description text under the video. Here's that text: The rubber grommets I showed to hold the extensions firmly in place are hard to find. BUT....I finally have them in my Amazon Store in the "Tire, Engine & Chassis Care" category. And I highly recommend installing Dill Stainless Stems and Extensions. So in conclusion, my recommendation is, buy the grommets from my store, then at the tire store have them install Dill Stainless Stems and Extensions which are very common and used by truckers and have them bent to be perfectly centered.

To be honest I bought this Alcoa 225392 stabilizer Extension kit a month and a half ago on Amazon, but I can't remember if I went through your store or not, but i saws you do offer the same kit from the same supplier. I was mistaken when I wrote that I bought 5.5" extensions, they were 5-1/8' extensions in this combo kit that came with the extensions and grommets in one kit.@@RVstreet I decided to install these myself after Camping World said they wanted to charge me $668 to install these on my MH that I purchased from them! I did measure the distance from the face of the outer wheel to the inner valve stem and felt that the 5-1/8" version should work, since the only other version Alcoa sold had in a similar kit was about an inch shorter and from my measurement I knew this shorter version would not work. I just saw your Tire video today, so I wasn't even aware of your recommendations on these valve stem extensions. Is there a good reason to not use the Alcoa valve extensions that came in this kit and to use the Dill Stainless Stems instead? I went with the Alcoa kit, since I had Alcoa wheels and thought that this was the way to go.

Hi Martin, I am under the impression that rv's need ten ply tires from what you said it sounds like 6 ply. What is the difference in tires plyes and is there a difference between class A and class C rv tires? I get a lot of misinformation and I trust yours which is why I'm asking

My tires are 16ply not 6. There's not much difference on Class A's and Class C's other than Class C's don't carry as much weight and they usually have 19.5" rims therefore a smaller tire. Class A's like mine are 22.5" rims therefore bigger tires. Class A DP's have even larger rims and tires and carry more weight. I have a friend that just replaced his tires on his Class A, DP and those tires were nearly $8K.

Hi Ron, No I don't. No need to. Since I road force balance my tires from the get go + running centramic rings my tires will time out WAY BEFORE rotating is even in the equation. But....even if I didn't road force balance in the beginning, the centramatic rings keeps my tires totally balanced even as they wear. That's why they're worth the money.

Martin, thank you for all your work on this channel. I just asked the Centramatic person on the phone about using their balancer on my Airstream Atlas motor coach with the 16x5.5 Alcoa wheels. He said that you can't use them because there is not enough clearance for the calipers. I said that I had seen someone (you) place the balancer between the two wheels in the dualies and he said he hasn't heard of doing that. Am I confused, or is this guy (from the company) misinformed. I also wondered how you get the stem across the balancer, since there aren't any extra slots in the balancer, just the 6 holes for the lugs.. Is the diameter of the balancer smaller than where the stems come out of the tires? Right now I am confused. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Either you asked wrong, maybe it's b/c of the size of your rims you can't put them in between the dually's OR I think he totally misunderstood what you're wanting to do. The balancers ALWAYS go in between the dually's.This is right from their website in the FAQ section: Simply remove the wheel, use the bolt holes as guides and reinstall the wheel. Steer axle balancers mount between the hub and wheel, while balancers for the duals mount between the dual wheels. Ask for Ricky Jordan. He's been their for years and knows what's going on. This is not rocket science. They just need to find the right ones for your rig b/c there are A LOT of different configurations. As far as the extension stem across the balancer, you can clearly see here kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJu5lpSiaNatmJo ....at 11:01 in the time line how the stem extension comes from the inside dually, thru the balancer, then out the outside rim. Where did you come up with there's only 6 holes in the balancer for lugs? There's a lot of info on the web about the difference between the two. Even though I have Centramatic Balancing Rings, as I said in the video...I want to start off as perfect as possible and spend the extra few bucks for Road Force Balancing. Not all will want to or be willing to do as I do...but that's ok. If your air compressor gauge is working on all other tires, you may have some dirt on that particular valve stem. Blow it out and try again. Also manually press in the valve stem for just a second and see if air comes out to make sure it's not stuck.

Martin, do you use the same brand of tire for your spare? I have an all wheel drive VW Passat 4 motion so I can't use different sized tires and as such have a full size spare that I had to buy because one didn't come with the car when I purchased it used so I took the very best tire that was already on the car when I bought new tires and put it on the spare wheel. I'm going to be replacing it with the same type tire as all the rest when I get enough money but what sucks is the tires I bought are directional, Hankook Kinergy 4S2's.

RV's usually do NOT need tire rotation simply b/c the tires will usually date out before that's needed. However, if you see uneven tire wear that's a sign that perhaps you're running the wrong PSI in your tires OR you have an alignment issue or worn out suspension parts....etc. In that case, you have to determine what parts need to be replaced, replace them, then do a full ALL TIRE alignment. Watching you tire wear every few thousand miles is a great way to monitor these items. But again, if your alignment is within spec, your running the correct PSI in your tires, you grease the front end once a year AND have centramatic rings you should never have to rotate tires during the life you have them.

My Thor citation came with metal extensions. Which rubbled against the simulators until they cut thru on the inside rear tire extensions and of course went flat. Tire guy said 90 percent of all rvs that had flat tires were caused by the same problem I had. So I removed them. Problem solved. I plan on watching all of your videos. I live in Willis so I will be looking for your motorhome.

@@RVstreet I do respect your opinion and advice. The inside extensions that were on the wheels were long and made of I believe brass and therefore kind of soft. I think they wiggled as the wheel rotated causing the rubbing and cutting. The simulators are thin sharp and cut right into the stems. I don't have the rubber grommets that may have prevented the problem. The cut stem as you concluded was touching the simulator. Another stem was considerably worn but was not touching the simulator while It was stationary. I am not real impressed the quality of the simulators. They may have rotated on the wheel. Anyhow I think It would be a good Idea to let your readers know that this is a potential problem.

@@RVstreet Thanks. The Mercedes wheels have 1.5" holes and the simulators have 1" holes that don't line up. I can buy the 1.5" stabilizers ($35.00 per pair) that would fit the wheel but it would still leave at least half of the length of the extension going through the 1" hole unsupported. It might work and it might not. I am looking for 1" stabilizers. I may just go with the air pressure monitors and crawl under the chassis when the tires need air. I have read reviews that stated that the system was inaccurate. Are you satisfied with yours? Thanks for sharing your experience with us newbies.
