In Search of Arniko

Introducing Newar craftsmen in Kathmandu (Oku Bahal and Bangamati village). Heirs to centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship, they continue in the footsteps of the multi-talented 13th century artisan Arniko who left Nepal and travelled via Tibet to find fame and honour in the court of Kublai Khan in Beijing. Part of a longer, yet to be completed, documentary film - funding urgently sought.

The Bati Si (White Pagoda Temple) was re-opened after nearly 10 years of renovations. There are several mysteries. On top of the stupa is a statue Arniko made of Mahakala, after which Kublai Khan finally conquered the south. The WPT was the Khan family temple until his death. The exact whereabouts of Aniko's burial remains a mystery. I looked around Beijing for it, and also made two trips to WuTaiShan mountain to the White Pagoda Temple Arniko built there, one of the last stupas he ever built. The reason for his death is also very interesting. I would be interested in communicating with you about this subject. I lived in Beijing from 2008-1018.

Have you made documentary about Arniko after arriving in China? I want to know how he came to fame.

Hi Rabindra, thanks for your question. We have run out of funds to complete the China part of the story, even though we have a lot of footage. Because Arniko was such a skilled craftsman he went to Tibet to work on the Sakya monastery. Here he was spotted by Phagsba, the emperor of China's spiritual guide. The emperor was Kublai Khan. Arniko was brought to Beijing to show off his skills. Kublai Khan was so impressed that he retained Arniko's services. Arniko remained in Beijing for the rest of his life. He obtained a high position in the court and was responsible for many artistic designs, including the White Pagoda temple in Beijing and other monuments. He was buried outside Beijing.
