In Search of Putin's Russia - Kremlin Rules
Twenty-five years after the Cold War, fear of Russia's regional ambitions seems once again to be on the rise; while many Russians, in turn, feel threatened and misunderstood by the West.
The country's president, Vladimir Putin, had said that he would "reclaim what was rightfully Russia's", and now this seems to be playing out in Crimea and eastern Ukraine.
The annexation of Crimea and the support for ethnic Russians fighting the Ukrainian government in eastern Ukraine have made Putin more popular than ever at home. But this hasn't been so well received outside of the country.
And there are other, more subtle, ways in which some believe Putin is turning Russia's clocks back - with apparent support from many Russians.
So how do Russians feel about their president and his "strong armed" way of governing?

What i find bizarre is the fact that whatever it's used as evidence of Putin's supposed authoritarianism, exits in every Western nation, but is never used as evidence of Western authoritarianism, which tells me that the issue here is that Putin has refused to bow to the West, so the West will do anything to undermine him.

In 1990, all the Eastern european countries and the Ukraine were impoverished. Since then all the former east european Warsaw pact countries have joined NATO and the EU and all of them are thriving today. The GDP per capita of the Ukraine is 1/3rd that of all it's former Warsaw pact country allies. Can you really blame the Ukrainian people for wanting better for themselves?

russians have always been patriotic because of the many invasions it had to suffer in the past. The security of its country always comes first as generations have suffered under foreign invasions and i feel putin wants his country to once again be strong and respected in the world and to make itself secure .

+aki Yeps Many invasions? I mean, I can't remember any successful invasion of Russia on he European side, at least for the XXth century. Am I wrong? If by invasion you only mean, they tried to kill us but we beat them back, I think every nation in the world, save in northen america, has experienced it over and over again.

+Contevent i didnt say they conquered Russia, i said invasion which means foreign powers entering russian territory illegally to cause harm to its people(intentionally or as a side effect of war).let me give you some big events as an example 1.The russian-mongol war. 2.the russian-french war.(napoleon invasion of russia 3.The russian- ottomon,french and britian war for the Crimean peninsula(britain and its allies not wanting the russians to have a warm water port as to maintain supremacy over the water) . 4.world war one between the allies(russia among them)- and the central powers(like germany) 5.world war 2 russsia-Germany(invasion of the russian land by the german led leader A.K.A Hitler) 6.The Chechnya war between russia-foreign backed militants in the Caucasus(guns dont magically fall out of the sky ,so someone must have armed them and who they were is stil debatable even today) 7.The vikings raids on russian territories(plundering russian villages time and again) 8.The japanase invasion on the russian eastern borders and not just once but TWICE!!!(also lets not forget the millions of chinese also killed because of japanese imperialism) 9. and lets not forget the millions russia lost defending itself due to this aggression by other countries,thank you.
@Contevent

+aki Yeps Well, that's not very exceptional. I'm not saying there is n reason to feel defensive, but it's not something that is uncommon. Everyone has been invaded, there is even a country in Europe (I don't remember which) that never won a war during its whole existence. They got invaded over and over again.
@FrostLord09
@FrostLord09 8 жыл бұрын
+Contevent well they are somewhat very exceptional mr contevent ,if you look up russian history u will see the difference in terms of invasion,loss etc etc from any european country in the last 500years. I do think western europe suffered great losses during the world wars but nothing even comes close to the russian losses+russia is a harsh place with its unforgiving winter its undefendable western land,its vast Siberian eastern frontiers and its southern caucasas mountains which somehow has molded the nation into giving high priority to its national security. Btw one shouldnt forget that russia aldo has the worlds largest natural resource reserves so one cannot be too careful in this modern times+ they havent officially ended the war with japan as there is stil disputes over the kuril islands.
@Contevent
@Contevent 8 жыл бұрын
+aki Yeps The loss in numbers or in proportion? And are you referring in general or just WW2? Because the argument of WW2 is used and abused. It's card that worked at the beginning of the cold war, but it was 70 years ago. You shouldn't justify your action based on what happened those days (yes, I include a lot of controversial subjects too, such as Israel or Germany). Besides, having a large territory is exceptional indeed, but I don't see the link between it and a sense of danger. And if harsh weather was making harsh people, the deserts and the poles would be home of the most inhospitable humans around. And it's not the case.

Well as someone born in Ex-Soviet Union and has been living mostly in upper middle class i think the ideas of socialism are appealing to me as well. Life was very simple though isolated but people were much more happy focused on arts, family, science now days our societies in all post soviet union have one thing in common that dirty dollar. Everyone wants to make money buy expensive cars have big houses its sad that even sometimes i'm obsessed with such materialistic things but its reality.....

No, this is incorrect. What the boy most likely meant was that in Russia you can't operate freely if you don't have the blessing of the government. While it is generally correct that well-connected people make more money in America, you also generally free to operate, even if the state does not like you. This is why democracy is important; it is fundamentally about accountability of the government to the people being governed. This element is sadly lacking in Russia today. Boris Nemtsov and Alexei Navalny are clearly emblematic of this truth.

9:00 - "If we'd also chosen Europe {just like Ukraine} - there would have been no problem" - a stunning example of immeasurable intellectualism. 1) It is up to Euro-Atlantic pandits to deside, who is to join the EU, be it Ukraine, Russia or Turkey, and NOT to the putative members. 2) Putin DID prepare Russia to join NATO and the EU (joint Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok, just like Engels wanted), but all these proposals were rejected by THEM, not by Putin 3) Ukraine obviously has not a single "problem" because of its pro-European choise, since 1991, and will forever be better off than Russia or Turkey. 4) I have managed to gather the necessary info about that years ago, living far away with very limited resourses... this domestic intellectual has not. Such intellectualism makes me seriously wonder - what mental deficiency is like?

I speculate that Ramzan Kadyrov's men may have been behind the hit job on Boris Nemtsov. Putin does not seem to have had a clear motive in this case, as Nemtsov was not really that important or threatening. This belies the question: after Putin, what then? If anything happens to him, the various competing factions within the government will be at each others' throats... Lavrentiy Beria's fate comes to mind.

+Max Mazourov The belief that a state is justified in using military force against a another state because some other states financed political movements that happen to go against their interests. The irony is that, of course, people who protested against Yanukovych's rule made precisely the same claims - that he was working for the interests of the Kremlin more so than the Ukrainian people.
@mmazourov
@mmazourov 8 жыл бұрын
+broodwarplayer The journalists' first question was: "in your opinion, Maidan was a result of an influence of an outside force?", the second was: "can it all be boiled down to a geopolitical conflict...blah blah". They were not talking about military intervention from Russia, they were talking about causes and legal/constitutional background to the Kiev coup. I didn't see anything controversial in the other guy's response.
@broodwarplayer
@broodwarplayer 8 жыл бұрын
+Max Mazourov I listened to his speech/performance before the interview and it's very clear what his stance on military intervention is. If you think that comparing everything that you disagree with to fascism is reasonable, well, we might have radically different understandings of the term. Now, as for the interview starting from 4:00 or so specifically, if you insist. What entity decides whether or not Ukraine's constitution was breached? It's not the EU, the US or Russia - those are Ukrainian courts. Were they given a chance to even get that far before Russia made their move? - No. On the issue of corruption, first of all, it's unreasonable to expect that something so systematic will be resolved within a year. But to think that it will happen as a civil war is going on in a country backed by a very powerful neighboring state is just ludicrous. Putin himself has struggled with this unfortunate USSR legacy for over a decade. Claiming that the US trained Ukrainians on how to attack the riot police, excuse me for being a bit blunt here, is just stupid. You don't have to go to a military school to learn how to throw a rock. Let's leave it at that for now so you get a chance to respond point by point without having to write a memoir.
@mmazourov
@mmazourov 8 жыл бұрын
+broodwarplayer I don't think that anyone from the West taught the protestors how to throw a rock or fire a gun, but I do believe that the strategy was not formulated in Ukraine and neither was the protest financed from within the country. I believe Ukrainian constitution provided for a 4-month impeachment process further to which the president could be removed lawfully. As this legal process was not followed, I believe it's fair to call what happened a coup. Putin said that Yanukovich was extracted from the country after being targeted for assassination. This could have been sensationalist if not for reported unfortunate deaths of 6 or 7 of Yanukovich's associates that remained in the country further to the coup. WRT fascism, I believe it started way before Maidan during WW2, when large swaths of Western Ukraine were openly pro-German. You may have heard of Bandera who was a bandit, collaborated with nazis and fought the Soviet army in WW2, but now elevated to the rank of national hero in Western Ukraine. You may have also seen reports of the likes of pro-government Azov battalion that adopted an SS insignia? But we are going off point to a larger set of issues. The two specific questions journalist asked really amounted to one: was the Maidan a popular spontaneous uprising or a geopolitical construct. The Russian guy thinks it was the latter and I agree.
@broodwarplayer
@broodwarplayer 8 жыл бұрын
+Max Mazourov WW2 history has nothing to do with this, let's just get it out of the way so we don't waste time. Whether or not banishing Yanukovych was legal and in accordance to the Ukrainian constitution is up to Ukrainian courts to decide, not you, me, Russia or anyone else. As for Yanukovych and his connection to the Kremlin, it's not a secret. Neither it's a secret that the Kremlin and other powers in Russia urged Yanukovych to crack down on the protests which is when violence escalated and people started to die, starting with protesters. After that it became a country wide movement because of the outrage that followed after how poorly and violently Yanukovych handled this situation. People often forget about facts. (just one reference to Yanukovych-Moscow connection pravosudovs.livejournal.com/18567.html and there's plenty more if you bother to look.) I'm well aware of the ridiculous Neonazi types in the Ukrainian government, I think there's 2 of them. That's out of 450 seats which is 0.4%. To call a government fascist because of 2 shitheads found their way in the government is silly and you shouldn't embarrass yourself like this. Communist Party of the Russian Federation has 92 out of 450 seats in the State Duma, does that make it right for me to call Russia a Communist state? Of course not, it's ludicrous, dishonest and pure propaganda, if my aim would be to discredit the Kremlin and Russia. You weren't all wrong here, the anti-Moscow sentiment is very real in Ukraine but it has nothing to do with fascism. A lot of people think that a better future for Ukraine lays in closer cooperation with the EU instead of Russia and that's why Russia is so aggressive on this matter. The ultimate bottom line here is the following - whether it was a coup or not, whether the West financed protesters or not, none of it justifies military intervention into a neighboring state, let alone annexation of its territories. That's pure aggression and cannot be tolerated by anyone, regardless which side you support in this case.

All of his buddies and friends are of the same sort, of course. They do not even realise that the corporatocracy they try to facilitate the entry in their home will make some of the poor and some of them homeless.

Honest, but not objective. Not a criticism - it's an auteur's vision and does not try to masquerade as something else (the director speaks for himself and represents his own worldview through the selection of "characters" and what he chooses to focus on). I'm still debating whether to like it or dislike it - on one hand what I said before, on the other it can easily be used (and I am sure it has been) to continue to propagate a false narrative about Russia around the world ... I guess I'll do neither.

I'm genuinely surprised that there aren't that many Kremlin bots which showed up this video in the comments section of this video which is a genuinely good thing in my book.

yeah, this is refreshing. Usually it's full of Putin's bots writing chauvinistically about how everything is the US' fault!

2:35 - "maidan is the main square in Kiev" - a symptom of very poor and shallow level of competence. Narrator does not even care about true meanings. Maidan per se means an open space, and is used in Ukraine to name a public gathering to solve crucial troubles, including dislodging a distrusted chieftain (Cossaks heritage). Some sort of direct democracy, so to speak. It has little to nothing in common with anything "Western".

0:50 - St. Petersburg is a pan-European town, collated from Italian, German, French and other European architechtural examples (just like some towns in the U.S. founded about the same time). It has little to nothing Russian in it. One of the best places to find arrogant fools disregarding the nation they truly belong to an bragging about how "European" they are.

No clues here about the essence of Ukrainian civil war, which is actually ideologized tribal warfare. Osterreich-Germanized tribes, mostly from Galicia, named themselves "true Ukrainians" and trying to "Ukrainize" the rest (up to 80% of populace and territory). Mid-Ukraine is "too Muscowian-like" and must undergo major cultural-linguistic overhaul, to fit into "true Ukrainiannes". The South-East are "mostly Muscovites" and are rather in FUBAR condition. Ideally, they about to be cleansed off the Ukrainian land for Ukrainiannes to succeed (read Dontsov and Bandera for details). At the VERY least, their pigsty Russian language is to be banned and they are to be granted non-citizen, "alien passports" (like Kurds in Asads Syria or Ires in British empire, the modern example - Russian minority in Baltic statelets). The same policy as "Young Turks" had in Turkey in Anatolia towards local Greeks, Armenians and Assirians, and their descendants have towards Kurds now. Minister of Culture of Ukraine, Eugen Nischuk, said this very clear: they are knowingly, purposedly imported alien folks with no genetics whatsoever, and are not at all necessary. Guess - who's side Euro-Atlantic "Wild West" is on within such divide? EU and US are nearly always on genocidal "Young [tribal cannibals]" savagery's side, be it tribal nazzis or whoever else.
