In this episode of In Search of Soil, we’re talking to one of the pioneers in developing probiotic technology, Dr. Matthew Wood, to shed some light on what efficient microbes (EM) are, what they do to the soil, and how our soils can benefit from adding them.

This is a great topic and there are a million ways to do the same 5ging with good results. My question still is how does KNF and JADAM create good results in plant growth? Plants live in an aerobic soil with aerobic microbes so how does adding facultative anaerobes/products to the soil feed the plant? Are the facultative microbes attracted to plant exudates or are the aerobic microbes feeding on the facultatives which release nutrients??? Would love to know.

Bokashi kitchen waste and a worm farm in a compost tumbler. Hi Diego, I just wanted to share what I am doing with Bokashi as some people are afraid to use it as they fear it may attract vermin to their garden. I have been using the Bokashi composting method for all my kitchen waste for about 6 months and as I didn't want to give mice and rats a venue to have a feast in my garden I have been adding the fermented Bokashi to my compost tumbler. (Similar to the tumbler you used on another channel on 17Jul21) After it has fed the worms I wash worm castings out of the tumbler into a tote below. I was wondering if anyone else was doing this. ??? The Bokashi bran I use is a commercially made product from a hardware store. This method (Bokashi them worm farm) produces a liquid without an unpleasant smell and seems to have a great effect when added to plants. I have only been adding it over winter so far so I'm really looking forward to adding it to plants over our southern hemisphere growing season. I really gained a lot from what you and Matthew discussed in this episode, thank you for your hard work.

I have a question. At 15.45 on the podcast your guest said "There have been some problems with compost tea because when you aerate you can get really nasty microbes, pathogens growing". This is the exact opposite of everything I have read elsewhere, i.e. that harmful microbes are created in ANAEROBIC (unoxygenated) compost tea production. Was this simply an error? I would be interested in other peoples thoughts on this. Thanks for a great podcast series.

My understanding is that the system even though it is being actively aerated can still become anaerobic as the biology can bloom and consume oxygen faster than is being aerated. Also the biology grown out in the tea will only be as good as the compost used. Hooe that helps. 🤙

@@smileysgardenI concur. Most people underestimate the amount of air actually required in a tea brew to keep microbes alive and when microbial foods are added And they grow they consume massive amounts of oxygen. I do my own microscopy and it's really easy to see this occur.

This one is so biased…KNF method is proven..what’s wrong with that..it’s this only trying to only use or just buy his products..? Not really educational podcast..

HI Diego, Just wondering. Have you tried any of DR Woods products? Such as BioAg. Or Pro-Bio Mother Culture? How do the results of SCD products compare with the EM1 product? I just ordered the Bio-Ag. Thank you for your thoughtful questions in your interview.

Interesting conversation! I tried to keep my thinking cap on to ask a good question here but Diego kept asking them before I could. I'll take a look at these products as a home gardener. Since I don't have a lab and can't guarantee results I suppose the $ would be worth the time and effort. I would be interested in getting a shovelful of Diego's tomato patch soil though.
