In Senegal, one man has created a lush oasis in the middle of the desert. Goran N'Diaye is a pioneer of permaculture. Following his own success, he's now training the next generation of young Senegalese farmers. In doing so, he hopes to change traditions and spread sustainable, ecologically friendly farming practices. Our colleagues from France 2 report, with FRANCE 24's Ellen Gainsford.

There won't be drought and famine if everyone learned permaculture. People wouldn't force themselves in cities because "they have no money to buy food". Plants don't care if you're rich or poor for them to grow. They respond on how well you know about nature. Old age practice of farming like monocropping has short term benefits and long term side effects. Depleting the soil of its fertility

Amazing work, we need more pioneers like him. However, I'm skeptical about the narrative that says cereal crops are not sustainable. Yacoubu Sawadogo in Burkina Faso was growing sorghum and millet sustainably in a similar climate.

@@leedza Cereals are a constraint in Africa due to heavy pest attack as they are located in an ecological hub , so farmers eventually turn to pulses which are more protein rich like peanuts and grams . Restoring diverse eco system can make cereals more productive and cheap but only if they stop commercialised monoculture.

Growing barley is great in different difficult environments (high mountains, dry deserts, badly affected soils...). It can grow in any region that recieves 200 mm of rain a year! Best of all, barley bread is great: delicious and nutritious!
@useyournoodle100
@useyournoodle100 3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, I think the larger problem is with monocultures. Lack of diversity does not provide the farmer with crops to feed himself and have something to sell. It also does improve the local environment by attracting wildlife.

Well a big advantage he seems to have is a great location. The water table is only 4 m below the surface. In most area I have worked in Senegal its 15-25 m. So coconuts may thrive on his farm but not elsewhere where the water table is so much lower. I liked the rhum palm as a perimeter windbreak species he is using.
