I am chairman of Gambia School Support, we assist 11 pre-primary schools in The Gambia with 1,500 pupils. Most of the schools have 'gardens'. The constraint is water supply as no rain for most of the year. Where we have solar boreholes the gardens and growth is amazing. A Moringa seed planted in Feb is now a 12ft tree!

Hi, if you are interested in sharing ideas, I used to help run a project that did school gardens and environmental education. If you don't mind answering, is there any cooking going on at the schools? You could use the grey water from the kitchens to water at least some plants. There are videos by Andrew Millison on how to do this. You could also look into drip irrigation. We used to have a college professor who gave us workshop on different farming techniques so that we could adapt the ideas for the children.

I hate to be nitpicky, but farming relies on mathematic and scientific principles, you can teach both. Farming would be fundamentally difficult without understanding the water cycle, and you can better divvy up your land by understanding maths.@@reynardbrits2839

Would like to remind you that just over 100 years ago 80% of countries GDP was dedicated to just food, now is around 15% in developed countries and farmers account for about 5% of workforce. Establishing This type of small family run farms is a step backwards and it will ensure Senegal will never be able to compete with mega farms.

​@@Omar-kl3xp they've already transformed over 30k hectares in the Sahel using water bunds and food forests. It's definitely possible, but the point is to put the power and production into the hands of local communities. It's not intended to be used for producing lots of food to export, but to alleviate local poverty while leaving them with an environment that's healthy and invokes a sense of pride and personal investment. This fosters better community engagement, and in many cases prevents the young productive members of a village leaving for bigger cities due to a lack of money or means.

​@@hiteshj2447 we're taught about the overall concept of an ecosystem, but I'm hoping that future generations will have a better understanding that each animal/plant/climate process/landform is a piece of the puzzle. They all work by interacting with each other, and are all very important. Like the wolves of Yellowstone eventually improving the quality of the water features like rivers because their prey animals caused erosion from overgrazing, which led to top soil loss and damage to trees. It's all very cool.

​@@RoachDoggJr2 There are NGOs that do that. Even ones that supply doctors and nurses to such places (never heard of traveling nurses or doctors without borders?). Most of the work shown in the video is done by the locals themselves, the NGO only has to provide training and possibly the treestock - not sure whether they do or not. But either way, they use very little resources to get great progress towards their goal. It's a surprisingly efficient setup.

WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a student studying urban design and ecology in college, this is really amazing to see the real life applications of the theory I learn in my classes. I hope to learn from people who live off the land and incorporate their ideas and values into city landscapes across the world. It's easy to feel hopeless but it's important to remember that all of us can help solve this problem together!!!!!!!!!

These farmers seem to have a superb quality of life compared to many in “developed” countries: clear skies, fresh unadulterated toxin-free food and environment, freedom to self-sustain, and the abundance to share it all! Their joy and fulfillment in life is likely multi fold that of a “city dweller.” Beautiful work🎉

Great video Andrew, and kudos to Planet Wild and Trees for the Future. Sadly, half the world is still chopping down trees, whilst only a few are trying to regenerate forests. Productive, diverse forests provide many benefits for both humans and the rest of the biosphere.

These food forests and water harvesting programs I'm learning about from you around the world are among the few things that bring me hope for the future. Not only because they can provide food and enhance the local diversity of life, but because they are socially and cooperatively based systems of community-building and mutual-aid. That has to be built back into any real possibility for the human future.
