Bravo Sir! I was so proud to see a young Black man, have the maturity and intelligence to actually understand what has always been known as British Humour! So much so, I subscribed. BTW, here's another to look up. Love Thy Neighbour! These programmes were British Families Saturday Night Entertainment, from Grandparents to Grandchildren. We would all sit around together watching these shows.

I miss comedy like this in England, I grew up watching Alf Garnet and Winston got the better of him time and time again, it was funny warm banter, which is the British way, well at least it used to be.

I wholeheartedly agree. However, a great many NFers used this humour to bash people for real. Turmed slot of people off and gave others the excuse to be righteous about it.

Alf Garnet was a lesson in the idiocy of bigots, and the bigotry of idiots. Unfortunately, some of the idiots saw him as someone airing their beliefs, "at last". It got to Warren Mitchell in the end, that there were still people who didn't get it.

Brilliant Sean, it's such a shame that things have changed now as we all have to think before we speak, back then it was so much better with everyone understanding that it was just small talk on both sides and laughed at it, take care mate 🍻🙏🙏🙏

Loved watching Alf Garnett back in the 80s and Eamon Walker as Winston was fantastic!!! Loved Marigolds character, especially when he would flit between talking Cockney then proper Jamaican lol.

The thing that really matters in comedy is is something funny. And this is. The two actors are really great.. and you can see the chemistry between the two of them. They bounce off each other… I like that the characters like each other..despite driving each other crazy… that makes it work.

You may also appreciate Love thy Neighbour and Rising Damp. Two more British sitcoms, which are contemporaries of In Sickness and In Health and have a similar race relation dynamic between two characters.

You have it totally got it. It is showing how stupid racism is. I love the way he says things but not sure whether he's talking about being black or gay. If you listen carefully. That was the point. You might enjoy Father Ted: Father are you a racist now. They mention Greeks. I'm Greek British & I found it funny.

Alf was so nuanced. First when racists used to talk to the actor, he made it very clear the programme was laughing AT the racists, not with them. Secondly, they used to use these arguments to give nudges towards black history. Thirdly he represented the fears of the everyman in the 80s that saw their country change completely in less than a generation. Its brilliantly clever.

Most good humour is best on reality. And that includes that character 'Alf Garnett'. There really were men like Alf in England and probably the rest of the UK; and without doubt still are. This series was made in the 1980s; with the the original 'Till Death us do Part' from about 1965 -75. Even as late as the 1980s, racism was still out in the open in the UK. When you understand the context in which the programme was made, and how people like Alf were being mocked, you can see how really funny it is. Having said that, we live in different times, and I don't think the BBC who made this series will ever show it again.

Laughed my butt of as a kid at Alf in the 70s n 80s and he was always shown up as the bigot he was so funny. the ironic thing is Warren Mitchel the actor was a Russian Jew or his parents were. R.I.P funny man it such a shame that back in the 80s n 90s the pc left shut all this humour down . We cant laugh at each other now it seem without someone taking offence, as a result we are all walking around in eggshells . Thanks for posting Sean, you may want to look at, It aint half hot mum .

It was actually deeper than just joking. The actor who played Alf, Warren Mitchell, was a very good actor. He was a Jew and he used Alf to ridicule all the stereotypes and absurdity that exists. It made us understand how stupid prejudice is. It made us look at ourselves and our own beliefs. Alf was always the fool, always mocked for the things he said. It showed people who held his views just how silly they were. The people who hold those views haven't gone away, they have grown in power. What has gone away is our ability to mock them in the way that these old shows did.

This is the most anti-racial comedy you'll get. Having a black gay man as his carer blew his bigoted brains out. The joke was on him. Excellent performance by all actors here. Sadly, it won't pass these days.

A fantastic piece of writing from Johnny Speight whose racist father was the inspiration for Alf Garnett. This was satire of the highest order and sadly we will never get to see this on TV again because of the woke morons who commission TV now who don't understand that the show was ridiculing the attitudes of people like Alf. The character was anti-Semitic despite Warren Mitchell, the actor who played Alf being Jewish.
