Max Bygraves was a singer/comedian popular in the 1950s-1970s. Jack Jones (the singer) had the same name as a trade union leader. Mary Whitehouse was an activist committed to "cleaning up" TV. A "Scouse" is someone from Liverpool. Alf is a East End Londoner (Cockney.) "Darlin' 'Arold" = Harold Wilson '60s/'70s Prime Minister.

It should be noted that Warren Mitchell was not a comedian but was one of Britain's finest actors. Born into a Russian jewish family, he was raised in North London. After being demobbed after the war he trained at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art RADA after encouragement from Richard Burton who he knew from the RAF. In stark contrast to Alf, Mitchell was politically a socialist!

Don't beat yourself up about not getting the references. You're watching a 50 year old sketch from another country which is full of dated political references about people who all dead, as are all four members of the cast. Any Brit under the age of 60 would also struggle. The cheekiest thing is that they talk about the royal family all the time when at least one of them is always sitting up in a box watching a Royal Command Performance live (thus the name). Edward Heath was the British PM between 1970 and 1974, so this was shown during those years. I was 11-15 then.

When Alf refers to the 'Mary Whitewash BBC' he's talking about Mrs Mary Whitehouse who led a protest movement against the BBC and television in general often accusing them of showing programmes that featured too much explicit sex or swearing. Her crusade obviously failed as UK society since the 1960s was casting off their repressive social norms of deference to authority and not swearing in public. As Bob Dylan so aptly put it in his song 'The Times They Are A Changin' especially the 4th verse: Come mothers and fathers throughout the land And don't criticize what you can't understand Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin' Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand For the times, they are a-changin'.

I remember all those names. They were household figures back in the day. But this is so long ago it's meaningless to anyone younger. Not a good choice for a reaction video. The main character here Alf, was cast as the most ultra-conservative, royalist, racist bigot you could ever hope to never meet and many of the jokes were so subtle that dumber people didn't even realise it was a satire, so you have to be very deep into the concept of the show to really 'get it'.

Look! :-) You are in the same boat as everyone in the UK who was born after 1990. They wouldn't have a clue either. Don't feel bad. Just try to get the jokes as they are based on largely clueless individuals. There is a lot of inferred comedy, which may not need prior knowledge of personalities.
