Thanks for your post. I watched it with mixed emotions and a few tears suddenly after years voices and names come flooding back. You promise to keep in touch then life takes over. It’s hard to see yourself young again then look in the mirror. When you get old it’s lonely, you have a lifetime of memories and not a soul left to share them with.

The NS men did NOT only receive 6 weeks training. In the infantry we suffered 12 weeks basic training and then a further 4 weeks on reaching Battalion. When we arrived in Malaya another 4 weeks jungle training

Minimum training? Wrong These lads were posted to regular army professional units and would have had ongoing training and experience from serving alongside the regular troops. They were not thrown ad hoc to war zones. Russia does that. We don’t.

Please keep in mind that National Service finished in the UK in late 1960 when the last National Servicemen (and they were all men) joined. You were taken on at the age of 18 unless your entry was deferred for some reason. Going to University was one. Near the end the date for recruitment was moved back to those born before 1 October 1939 So, the youngest of them still living would have been 21 years of age in 1960. They will now be celebrating their 85th birthday this year, if they are still with us of course. This is why, when I hear anyone under the age of 84 banging on about how great the reintroduction of National Service would be, my reaction is "How the hell would you know? You didn't go through it!". 🙂

@@joehagen8854 I can tell you after my 9 years of service in the 1980s that the British military does not want a return to National Service! They want highly motivated, well trained people and not a bunch who don't want to be there in the first place. Anyway, the country can't afford to have their youth doing sweet b@gger all for 2 to 3 years. And I go back to my original point: Are you 85 years of age or over Joe? No? Then you don't know what you are talking about because YOU did NOT do National Service!!!

Giving an already in need of help person the knowledge to kill people is not really a bright idea if logic has a.say in things . As you can't un teach these things .

So enjoyed this. My father did NS and was called up for Suez. I recognised so much from the film - the uniform seen in his photos, the challenges of barrack life, as well as the opportunity to learn a skill and develop. He always walked with his feet facing out - just as they were as they were marching in the film. Oh and his shoes were always polished and shone - another enduring habit from his NS days! He died in 2003.

I served from '79 until '89, even back then people were talking about bringing N.S. back, the attitude of the majority of those serving was that it was a bad idea, if you had to go into combat you wanted the people backing you up to be people who had volunteered to be there knowing the risks and not someone who wasn't given a choice.
@jameslynch78264 ай бұрын
I agree but the courts run the country now and everybody would be appealing etc for the slightest reason. That sums up modern Britain. Put to shame by the likes of Finland Sweden and the Baltics. The army is good fun .
