It's great to see Dee Dee so vibrant and enthusiastic, he was the main songwriter and should never be forgotten. If they had only ever released the first three albums they still would be legends.....the Ramones are the most influential band of the past 40 years!

This is an amazing document, apparently from late 1977, early 1978, when they were promoting "Rocket to Russia." Johnny has often said he and Tommy did all the interviews in the early days because they sounded smarter and more coherent than Joey and Dee Dee. But this seems to prove the opposite -- they both sound intelligent and thoughtful. And frankly, Dee Dee is amazing ... I've never heard him sound so coherent.

'Rock n roll stripped down ' you couldn't describe the Ramones better in a hundred years , Dee Dee's honesty is so charming and endearing ! Isn't it amazing how four guys from the same neighbourhood are destined to meet and give to the world a bible of music for eternity , wow that surely is the greatest example of fate that is imho right up there alongside the Beatles , no doubt ! Long live rock n roll , long live the Ramones ! 🤩🤩

Johnny said something to this effect: "We were getting a cartoon dumb image, so I tried to control that my making sure only me and Tommy did interviews" (he added "and I was unfriendly, that mostly left Tommy'). Ok, well this time, his system broke down, because here are two most musically creative Ramones, and they both sound just as well spoken as Johnny ever did.

I love these guys! Hate it when people don't see the amazing talent they have or say they are overrated. Only ramones fans can understand the effect the have. swear they're a drug haha I told the doctor I didn't have depression, it's just withdrawal symptoms from good music please give me my headphones back.

WHO says they're overrated?! I've never heard anyone say that and I hope I don't! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Ramones

I’ve almost never heard anyone refer to the Ramones as being “overrated”. I mean, are there haters? Sure, but even the haters typically acknowledge the fact that the Ramones never got their due.

DeeDee seems so clear and coherent here. I'm not a betting person but I'd wager this was in one of his sadly short-lived seasons of sobriety from drug use. Poor Dee Dee if only he'd been able to kick it for good maybe we'd at least still have him. I miss them all.
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
I’m gonna guess this interview was done while they were touring (for Rocket To Russia), which would explain Dee Dee’s sharpness here. I’ve always heard he kept his shit together when they were on the road. It was when they’d have a little downtime between albums and tours that Dee Dee would “indulge”.

What a great interview! This is Dee Dee and Joey as I remember them--Joey with the English accent, Dee Dee looking so good that he was the Babe Magnet for the band. And I love the way they defend themselves. This is the kind of interview everyone was forced to do back then: "What is Punk?" "Why is is so violent?" "Do you think it is having a negative effect on the children?" etc. etc. Please, please please. Meanwhile no one was asking about the drug use and sex at Studio 54.
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the interviews back then, at least the ones with punk bands were always these really accusatory affairs. The people conducting the interviews always seemed to have an agenda that involved making the bands or musicians look like dimwitted violent thugs, yet it was always so obvious (to me anyway) that they weren’t even remotely like that. I never understood the extreme reactions from the public towards punk back then. It really scared a lot of people to death, and all it seemed to take was a black leather jacket and short hair. So bizarre.
@LetsGoMetsGo334 жыл бұрын
As I was listening to these old clips, my wife was nearby and heard Joey's closing quote, about what punk rock is (around 4:18): ''(in punk there is) no crap involved". So she goes "well that leaves GG Allin out", lol.

Honestly, I’d say that Joey and Dee Dee were the two most intelligent band members in the Ramones, yet they both got this rep as being the opposite of that, at least in the early years.
@YesOkayButWhy5 ай бұрын
I didn't know the guys, so maybe I'm wrong. But I'd guess, sticking with the first 4 guys, Johnny was most politically and economically inclined or informed, Tommy was the most well read or interested in history, Dee Dee had street smarts streets ahead of the rest, and Joey was the most emotionally intelligent and empathetically sensitive. This is based on what I've seen, read and heard.
@YesOkayButWhy5 ай бұрын
And all were artistic in their own ways, but given my conjecture above, it's interesting Dee was the main songwriter, and the breadth of subject matter that came, for example, from him.

I wish the uploader would have included the date, or at least the year this interview took place. I’m going to guess some time shortly after the release of Rocket To Russia, going on Joey’s hair and the subject matter being discussed (comparing Sheena to Blitzkrieg Bop for example). It’s definitely no later than ‘78. The funny thing about that is that I’ve always understood that in those days it was typically just Tommy who gave interviews, since Johnny, who was the obvious band alpha couldn’t stand doing interviews and thought Joey and Dee Dee sounded too “dumb”. What a load of crap that was. They both sound smart and eloquently spoken here.

Being an addict myself I’m pretty confident to say Joey wasnt the drug addict some people think he was. He wor sunglasses and his hair to cover his face because he shy and picked on his whole life, I mean his first group he was singing with SNIPER fired him because he was too ugly to be the front guy for the band they said, What a mistake they made, then he ended up being a ramone but anyways I’m sure as rock and roller he partied it up but he wasn’t a stone cold junky he was a smart guy just very shy, he invested in stocks and was good with Money. I could be wrong but I don’t think he was a hardcore partier.

Joey opened up and Dee Dee became sillier. I think Dee Dee started playing a character based on expectations because here he’s obviously grounded and can respond seriously. Plus a guy like Dee Dee got tired of answered the same questions for over a decade so decided to have fun with it and talk about legless dachshunds.
