Josh, so true about all the lives affected by something we so take for granted in this day and age… an airport. It’s like a time machine. Step through a portal (terminal gate) and transport anywhere in the world in just hours. 100 years ago, a steamship might take a month or more to reach a destination that today is a mere 12 hour flight. 200 years ago, it would be a wooden ship with few guarantees of safety and more often than not, a one way journey. What a time we live in. The freedom of flight is a special thing. No country in the world allows what you and Chelsea just experienced. Enjoy it. I know I do.

the cinematic was amazing! Im 13 years old and i am working towards my private pilots license and the inspiration i received from you was a big part of why i pursued this dream. I'm based out of KFSM and I love that you can fly around the U.S. and see all this beauty the world has to offer. Thanks a ton! Elliot.

Josh, Thanks for making this video. As an airline pilot who flies into LAX often its quite humbling to see another type of pilots perspective of LAX, especially from a vantage point that we dont even get to see. Keep up the amazing content! I live my aviation dreams through your videos as flying for the airlines can be quite taxing and often boring as were either so busy or just to far from the surface to really get to enjoy the time in the air. Its content like yours that makes me fall in love with aviation once again. Cheers!

More fun than the LA SFRA is the “mini route” which is quite a bit lower right over the middle of the LAX runways. But that requires approval, is one way at a time, and you're talking to the LAX tower. Did that several times long, long ago as a student, and you'd better be on your “A” game. I was off altitude by 50’ climbing to the proper altitude (before even hitting the Bravo) and got chewed out. Round gauges, no glass (it existed but not in what I was flying), no GoPros. I remember seeing these pure white A380’s there for trial approval right under me, and then seeing these tiny little things nearby I realized were 747’s. You can’t really do the mini route unless you’re coming from or going to KSMO; I've heard the request denied for someone coming in from the Valley (“do the SFRA” they'll tell you). Incredible as a student back then flying SO close over LAX and talking to the TOWER that's landing the big boys. By the way, that's just haze, not smog. And loved the video. Brought back a lot of memories.

I regularly fly through the LA Special Corridor and you were wise going early. It can get pretty crazy in there with sometimes countless planes all going through at once. And Josh, that's not smog you were looking at. That's our SoCal morning marine layer. Welcome to SoCal my friend.

I made the cross country adventure to OSH last year and was able to stand next to 80991. I stood there and just stared at the windscreen and thought about all the places Ive seen virtually through it. Puts a whole new meaning on watching these videos having seen it in person! Thank you and Chels for all the amazing content!

Flying through the SFRA is a nice option, and definitely worth trying once or twice. I'm based in SoCal so I've used it many times. For your route I would have recommended using one of the published VFR transitions. You could have stayed at 9500ft and used the Hollywood Park route or descended to 5500ft for the Coastal route. I have never been denied one of these clearances, though I suppose ATC can deny it due to high workload. Usually the controller will let you turn direct AVX once you are 5-10nm south of LAX (but still in the Bravo). The benefit of doing these is that you stay higher for the over-ocean crossing. If you do the SFRA, I would also recommend recontacting ATC once clear of the SFRA to resume flight following. You will definitely want to be in contact with ATC if something goes wrong over the water. Enjoy SoCal, and fly safe!

Josh it's so thrilling to see you flying over my old stomping grounds, having grown up in Glendora, CA and learning to fly out of Brackett and Cable Airports. I tried landing at Catalina once, but the crosswind component exceeded what the 172 could handle, so we hightailed it out of there up to Big Bear for a check out there. This was all 40 years ago.

I too saw you both at Osh having travelled from the UK to fulfill an item off my bucket list (visiting Osh). I would love to fly over LAX (been through LAX several times). We have a similar flight track in the UK (without the views) when flying down the Manchester LLR. We set our freqeuncy, set the transponder, and that's it. A 4 mile, 1300' corridor between MAN and LPL airports, just listening on the frequency

I just love what you did with the 172! I never considered one, until I saw 80991 finished! New engine, tuned pipe, all new glass and even the new "yoke" made a difference. You look at it and feel it all the time. I'm 72, and in no hurry anymore. Caravan, Kodiak is lots of $$. The 172 forces you to pack light, and limits passengers. I'm fine with both! LOL You also see a lot more. Thanks much for the ride, and advice! Hope your kitty is doing well, I have a relative that looks just like her! Peace 8) --gary

I live about an hour from KATL and I never realized how much bigger it is (in a smaller space) than LAX. Two terminals, seven concourses, and 192 gates. That's insane. I know it's the busiest, but you would think LAX would be right there with it. Especially having nearly an extra mile in area to work with. Great video, can't wait to see the next one.

Dude this is so wild, I have made a goal for myself to fly south from NorCal and do this route once I pass my IFR check ride. One thing that has me curious is if one of the airliners on either set of parallels has to execute a missed (go around) at any point, is there any procedure in place for avoiding conflict with traffic passing over on the SFRA? Super improbable conflict, but I guess they could start the go around on a 1-2 mile final. I just always think of the what if’s lol.
