In the Classroom: Learning Mandarin in high school

English classes are mandatory for a majority of Chinese students, but less than 0.5 percent of English students learn Mandarin Chinese. Marian High School says they wanted to offer the language to set their students up for educational and real-world success.

Second languages in high school are a waste of time and money. It takes decades to learn a language as an adult, and it's best to start in kindergartens. I've never known anyone who became fluent in a language they only started learning in high school. It's better to teach economics and civics, which everyone needs to know, and they dont multiple years just to lean the basics.

@@Yonoseloqueponer Your trying to tell me you went from no knowledge of spanish to fluency from just what you were taught in one year of high school? What school was that? When I was in high school after 4 years of a language you were considered very talented if you reached fluency. One year high school text books dont get to fuency. They only teach beginner to intermediate.

@@williampennjr.4448 No, I had a little knowledge of Spanish from middle school, but it was going so slow. When I was in 8th grade I decided to start learning on my own and after a year and a half I would call my self fluent. I’m not native speaker level but I can hold a conversation in many topics
