A few years back, my dad passed away. He was unwell with cancer, everything was a struggle then he caught COVID and we lost him. When you lose a parent or anyone you love, part of the process is dealing with the regrets of what you didn't do, what you didn't say and what you wish you could've done to show that person how much they meant to you. You obviously can't say or do those things but a strange thing happened to me that I'd like to share. At the time of losing dad, we'd just been taken under the wing of the label Last Night From Glasgow and we were at the start of writing songs for our debut album. To be in this position of privilege was a dream come true, something my dad always supported and would've been so proud of. Backtrack a few years, to around 2017/18 my dad had asked me to write some music to some lyrics he'd written about social media issues, living life online and the disparity from real life. I didn't get around to it while he was alive and I thought I'd lost his words. It's one of those things I didn't do for him, but wished I had. I hadn't seen the piece of paper in years, It was lost and I hoped my dad wouldn't ask about it. Around a month after he'd gone, I was just messing around on my guitar when I struck a couple chords.. I started singing 'waiting for the call', not thinking about it but after the fact, songs seem to reveal their meaning. While isolating after visiting dad in hospital, my mum, Rachel and I were just in, everyday waiting for the Dr to call with some good news. If you've gone through Covid with someone you love, you'll know what an awful time that was in waiting. Just not knowing anything, calling the hospital, the nurses not knowing, the Dr wasn't available, "he would call when he can" We'd be told everyday.. When the Dr did eventually call, it was only to tell us that they had to turn off his life support. And that was it. Forward a month when I was singing the line - waiting for the call, I turned to the table behind me and sitting on top of a pile of paperwork, were the words my dad had written all those years before. I had no idea how they were just there, but I started picking out some of the lines, Rachel jumped in with a take on an old Buddhist quote about 'time being the coin of life' and within about 5 minutes, I had a whole song, my dad's song. *** For the video I just wanted to portray how I was feeling for the months and year that followed. Lobke Van Eijk who directed the video, was sympathetic and patient with my idea, being a bit close to the mark for me and artistically not as creative as she'd prefer, she just ran with my requests and probably bit her tongue quite a lot. I wanted to tell the story of how I felt at the time of losing dad. Lots of noise was going on around me, we were just signed to LNFG, life was upside down, we were isolated from our family, I was about to turn 40.. I felt like a by stander in my own life, couldn't really focus on anything, I felt out of place, out of sorts, not myself and the one person I'd want to share the exciting LNFG news with was no longer here. So I wanted to immortalise him in the video and the song. It's his picture on the window ledge. It's probably not the most interesting video we could have made, but It's one that tells this story, at least for me, it feels like giving something back. Once again special thanks has to go to the loveliest man, Rob Eveling for the stella production on this track and all of our album.. (if you're not listening through speakers or headphones you're not really hearing anything) Anyway, thanks for reading, I'm in a better place now, enjoy the song x
