In the Garden - Blue Spruce Disease

I have a 55 foot tall 50 year old blue spruce that I'm losing to this canker. Dang. No way to save it. :-( Planted that when I was just a kid. yes, he's right, these droughts are what had started it spiraling downward. We did water it, but it obviously wasn't enough. It's gonna cost me a mint to have it taken down as it's next to the house. It was always great from shielding against the hot summer sun. I'm sure gonna miss it.

Hi Karen - there are plenty of other evergreen varieties that could be planted that don't have this problem. Check with your local Cooperative Extension office to get connected with a Master Gardener for your community.

Get Norway spruce, they are disease free and grow very quickly

I have a Norway Spruce and it has the fungus, too. It's dying just like my blue spruces. I'm thinking of planting arborvitaes or pine trees. Thanks.

Same problem in Roanoke. Will just cut my spruce tree down.
