I loved being able to see this video with my grandfather. He can be seen at the 15:26 mark of the video. Old regular Baptist are a unique part of our culture, the singing brings back a strong, haunting sense of nostalgia.

Way back in 75' Herb Smith grabbed me to be his sound man when women were protesting a strip mine ln Knott County. We showed up to film, but the camera was empty! I said Herb you got no film and he said "they don't know that"! The protest got rained out, so Herb took me to meet Frank Fugate who is in this film! We also stopped by the home of Dan Gibson another of my heros! What a day. Thanks Herb!

I grew up on the accapello four part harmonies of the Mennonites. Much prefer that. 😊

So while the Coal Camps were segregated, by osmosis the Irish, Scotts,Italians and Germans all heard the Black Americans having service on the Sunday's that why these saints sound extremely similar to a Black churches also why my Mother still make Corned Beef and cabbage & Pepperoni Roll as a Black family in Southern Wv.
