Legendary Godzilla 2019 Not too far off. The real white sperm whale “Mocha Dick” (who inspired Moby) terrorized whalers for 28 years, surviving over 100 battles with whalers and destroyed TWENTY whaling ships the size of Essex. Mocha was actually very docile until others of his species or him were attacked. He was especially angered by whalers harpooning innocent baby sperm whales to upset the adults into coming to help them and get harpooned too. Mocha’s wrath showed no mercy to such. Kind of like if little human kids got stung up by hornets and Iron Man showed up with an immense flamethrower to send those vicious insects screaming to their doom. To the whales, Mocha (aka Moby) was a SUPERHERO. So who wound up being the true villains?

The crew being attacked is actually kind of “karma” on them because the story goes that before they came across this pod they stopped by one of the Galápagos Islands and collected 60 100 pound tortoises for food and one of the crew mates set fire (for fun) to a tortoise which caused the island to catch fire which therefore caused the extinction of the tortoises they just picked up and the birds native to that island.

Eh Sperm whales are notorious for being aggressive. They've been known to attack ships without provocation which is what actually happened if I recall correctly. In reality the Whale that attacked the Essex did so unprovoked. They had been repairing their boats after an unsuccessful hunt, which where frequent before the advent of the harpoon cannon, when the whale surfaced and rammed them. What's more before the advent of the harpoon cannon and the iron clade the whalers and their prey were fairly evenly matched, what's more the life of a whaler was harsh, dangerous, and not very profitable. Well not very profitable to the whalers themselves the owners turned a tidy profit but most whalers ended up indebted to the companies who literally charged them for everything on the ship. They practically charged the sailors for breathing on their ships, and in the end whalers who signed on for one year would end up pressed into 3 more to pay off their debts.

I see a lot of comments regards to whales being gentle etc, when we hinted them, they understood it and treated us differently then they do now, it’s actually in many naturalists journals (that’s what biology and zoology was called before they were a proper science) whales behaviour towards humans changed, and the Japanese still hunt them so it’s even more impressive they can distinguish between passive and aggressive human behaviour. Vegeful_Asura, no it wasn't. Moby Dick is the story of a whale-hunter (like the ones in this movie) who got his leg bitten off by a huge white whale (it did NOT eat the leg), and the hunter becomes so obsessed with getting revenge that he eventually provokes the whale into fighting back (like the whales in this movie, which is supposed to be the story that inspired the author). And the hunter's obsession ends up costing him his life. The whole point of the story of Moby Dick was that *the whale wasn't the monster.*

ah ok, i haven't read it since high school so i barely remember anything...maybe ill pick it up again thanks

Eh it's debatable how innocent Moby Dick actually is. Within the story itself numerous individuals who have encountered the Monstrous Whale have treated it not as an animal but an eldritch abomination. A wrathful divinity that attacks any that would cross it's path possibly the avatar of all that is evil in the world. Another possibility is that Moby Dick is just an extremely big and extremely aggressive breed of sperm whale. Which makes sense Albinos don't really survive long in the wild so Moby Dick would have to be extremely aggressive to have survived to become that big. What's more we often see the results of fights between whalers and Moby Dick but only once do we see how the fights began.
@Mouse_Metal Жыл бұрын
@@blixer8384 Mocha Dick (the real life inspiration for Moby Dick) wasn´t the only whale who attacked ships. There were several normally colored sperm whales who also attacked ships. Animals of this size don´t need camouflage colors. Beluga whales are smaller, and there are all white.
