At the dawn of time, their hoof prints mingle with those of Humans. Step after step, century after century, the great bovine family has accompanied humankind. As essential partners on our greatest territorial conquests, they continue to change the world at our side even today.
In the beginning, 18 million years ago, there lived a tiny, shy, forest-dwelling horned mammal. All alone, through the laws of evolution, this small antelope becomes the ancestor of the Aurochs, now extinct, which turned humans from the status of hunter-gatherers to that of breeders. Then the ox, yak, buffalo and zebu followed. These descendants are now pivotal elements in many cultures across the world. And against a background of species disappearing from the Earth, they are becoming the biggest land mammals.
From their wild forms to the multiple domestic breeds they produced, via the selective hand of humans, the bovines have thus gone side by side with our civilizations throughout our History. This series takes us along their trail.

We are raising a small yak herd in North America, Utah at 6,000 feet. They fit in so well with this land and love moving and walking in the mountains. They are resilient animals.

I've really enjoyed this beautiful documentary, but I have one question: Was the narrator mistaken in saying the village was at 1,300 feet elevation above sea level? This being the Tibetan Plateau, shouldn't it be more like 13,000 feet above sea level?

Yes! This story is true across all cultures. In USA people also worry about losing a traditional occupation without preparing for an uncertain future. Stay safe. Thank you. My great grand father fed his people from making buggy whips. Good job. Now - no buggies so no market for whips. This person died bitter.

The Yak (Poephagus grunniens) is a large cattle native to Central Asia, it is the second largest living cattle species, the second largest living bovine, and the second largest living bovid in the world, it is the only extant species of the genus Poephagus and the closest living relative of both the European Bison (Bison bonasus) and the American Bison (Bison bison), the scientific name of the yak means "grunting grass-eater" in latin, there are two recognized subspecies of yak: the Himalayan Yak (Poephagus grunniens grunniens) and the Kunlun Shan Yak (Poephagus grunniens kunlunshanensis).
