FILM DESCRIPTION:
Unemployed young Irishman Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis) gets by as a petty thief in 1970s Belfast. When local IRA leaders get fed up with him, he flees to England and meets up with his friend Paul Hill (John Lynch). On the same night that the IRA bombs a nearby pub, the friends get kicked out of their communal digs and are forced to sleep in a park. He returns to Belfast, but is arrested as the prime suspect in the bombing and imprisoned, where he spends 15 years trying to clear his name.

My Irish Father who had a business in Ireland and U.K. was heading to Dublin on the night of the Birmingham pub bombing, he was using his Brothers car also a director of the business with Irish plates, he was held and questioned for 14 hours..punched in the face during the interview and abused..he had lived in U.K. since 1958...what in his opinion saved him was ironic...His Wife my Mother had worked for the ministry of defence since 1965 and had a high security clearance, My Father had been vetted and cleared as part of the procedure, this was pre-computer, he was allowed a phone call 12 hours in, my Mother made one call to MD and a special branch officer arrived at the Police Station and my Father was released in five minutes, no apology, the Special Branch officer was with him when in the car park by chance the arresting officer spoke to my Father, called him Irish scum..the special branch chap punched him breaking his nose..saying his own Father was Irish then kicked him in the bollocks .... gosh imagine that in UK in 2020 😬

One day when my son was in secondary school an Irish young boy called him a terrorist( being from the middle east) it just happened that the Biology teacher who is also Irish heard it and it made him furious, he spoke to the boy and explained to him that the Irish were called terrorists as well and suffered a lot because of that stereotype , he then asked him to apologise and write a paper about racism. My son always remembers the anger and the pain in his teachers voice and manner at that moment.

The British burned all the schools, banned education -- made it ILLEGAL -- and would hang anyone caught teaching. Immediately. No arrest, no trial. @@veralenora7368 Not really, Irish brigades formed from immigrants fought for both North and the Confederacy. The Irish who fought for the south considered the US government to be as bad as the English. Most Irish were conscripted or 'volunteered' into the Union and Confederate armies though, depending on where they landed, as a condition for being allowed to stay. With only tyranny and famine left in Ireland they had little choice in the matter. At the Battle of Fredricksburg, the Union Irish Brigade was sent to attack a defensive line held by the Confederate Irish Brigade. Many of those soldiers had family and friends on the other side of the field but it didn't stop the slaughter, so tragic.

@@veralenora7368 I've always found in history that heroics are usually anything but. There's always tragic contributing factors, usually either incompetence or malice. If you haven't already done so, check out the Fredricksburg sequence in the film Gods and Generals. That film got a lot wrong but its portrayal of that battle is pretty great imo. It really shows the helpless situation of the attacking Union forces, the idiocy of Ambrose Burnside and the bravery of both sides, especially the tragedy of the Irish brigades

0:57 Paul Hill actually wasn’t set free until five years after Gerry Conlon was released. He was kept in prison until 1994 for an unrelated crime.

That's not quite right. He was returned to prison in Belfast but was released pending appeal. He traveled to America where he met and married Courtney Kennedy (RFK's daughter) in 1993. The conviction was quashed in 1994.

I always cry in this scene... I've seen so many court scene in in cinema, none seems as emotional than this one to me. The "I'm free man I'm going out the front door." is such a powerful line... that should become as universal than "May the Force Be with you" or what ever. In the whole world we should all shout this line to every form of dictature or autocracy. This movie make me proud to live on the same planet than Irish.

Another reason for the conviction of both the Guildford four and the Maguire Seven was the scientist who did the testing based his tests on the initial suspicions of the investigators. He was found out in,I believe 1977 or 1978 and suspended on full pay. A probe of over 6000 cases was started;police and fellow forensic scientists found multiple errors and inconsistencies in over 1500 cases. Eventually, the scientist was ordered to retire due to "limited efficiency". By the time the probe was over, unfortunately many innocent men and women had been incarcerated for years. Because of the statute of limitations- many of these people had been locked up for more than a decade;The Director of Public Prosecutions was unable to press charges against the scientist involved for both Perjury, Conspiracy to Pervert the Course of Justice and withholding evidence. Had he been found out sooner, it may have been possible to prosecute him criminally. The only recourse available was to tell him to take early retirement. An error rate of 25% would never be acceptable. 0.5% max

By the time that the truth by the lawyers was discovered, the statute of limitations had passed. Meaning that criminal charges would be impossible to make stick. It would also make the officers appear more heroic to their supporters if they were charged and acquitted. The only thing that could be done is retire the officers and scientists quietly to minimise the publicity.

Still brings me to tears. I was 23 in San Francisco and popped into an indie theater to see whatever was on the screen. It was this movie. At the end, I realized it was a true story. I was in tears and angry when I left. I was still understanding the intricacies of governments and corruption and cover ups that made the battles between people even more difficult. I wish people would learn... but we never have in all our time on earth and I fear we never will. There are many who are good people... but it only takes a few to really F things up more.

I'm 66 on December 22nd and I well Remember the the IRA Bombings in Birmingham and Guildford in the 1970's and as a lifelong Abolishonest thank God we Abolished Hangings in the 1960's as those poor Men would have died a terrible death:but we Mustn't forget the victims of the Birmingham and Guildford Bombings of their families and I know that its been 48 years ago but the pain of what the Relatives are still going through must be really hard

I was a 19-year-old Irish man working in Bank of Ireland in Queen Street in 1991. I went out to get a sandwich for lunch and just happened to be passing the Old Bailey as the Birmingham 6 were being released. There were loads of people waving Irish flags but I had no clue what was going on until I got home and saw it on the evening news! A great day for the parish ;-)
