That detail on the engineers' side of the Rio Grande units is a cab vent. It is a dual position vent that can open to whichever side depending on the direction you are going. The pipe ahead of the rear truck is an engine sump drain.

Love these models! I'd like to have one of each, I'm going to pre-order one of the D&RGW models. Do we have SP Phase II's in the works? I'm eagerly waiting for my SSW GP30's to arrive.

The GP40 Rio Grande is looking great. I've preordered 4 units so far. Looking forward to them coming end of the year. This is from the 2nd batch of GP40's in the large herald Rio Grande. The order after this was GP40-2. I too preferred the 70's D&RGW GP30, but when I got to looking at the photo's, changes were made to some between the late 70's and mid 80's so even though they represented late 80's and later. they could be backdated. But I'll be looking forward to the probable phase 1 D&RGW road numbers 3001-3013 hopefully with snow plows.

Save up as soon as the preorder announcement comes - production numbers are based on the preorder numbers, not to mention, the amount of features and detail in a Rivet Counter more than justify the cost. This is no different than brass was until the 2010s: high-detail, smooth operation, prototype-specific, limited numbers - the only difference is that the operation is smoother, there’s DCC, and the price point is less than brass.
