The longest train I ever saw Went down that Georgia line The engine passed at six o'clock And the cab passed by at nine In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And we shiver when the cold wind blows I asked my captain for the time of day He said he throwed his watch away A long steel rail and a short cross tie I'm on my way back home In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And we shiver when the cold wind blows Little girl, little girl, what have I done That makes you treat me so? You caused me to weep, you caused me to mourn You caused me to leave my home In the pines, in the pines Where the sun never shines And we shiver when the cold wind blows

the first time I heard it, I was told it's called black gal, and that's what they'd sang instead of my girl in the verses. there's so many versions of this song, but I guess that stems from it being an amalgamation of two songs to different degrees in different areas in each version.

Leadbelly and Bill Monroe were the two people to make it famous, but no one knows who wrote it. The earliest versions date back to the late 1800s.
@CorbCorbin

Look up the different versions Leadbelly did. It’s a really dark song. It’s basically someone asking the young black girl where she was, because a man, whether her man or a lover is found dead. It’s a fun one to do with a female singer, having the male sing the questions, and the woman respond with the answers. Leadbelly has versions in which he changed things, and Monroe’s version is its own thing.
