It’s actually my favorite Genesis album. I don’t think Peter Gabriel’s voice ever sounded better than it does here.

It is overlooked and is very good. A masterpiece it is most definitely not. You're allowed to really, really like something, even love it, and not go around calling it a masterpiece!
@jimmycampbell7817 минут бұрын
I really like it, I was surprised how good Trespass was - it was one of the Genesis albums in their discography that I came to last and I didn't expect it to be so close to the next three in quality. Yes they are better but the point is that its not far off.

This is a very interesting ranking: 1 Tarkus, 2 In The Wake Of Poseidon, 3 Time and A Word, and 4 Trespas. I would have put Gentle Giant in here. For me, they were as good as these bands, and if they were in this, then Acquiring The Taste would have been my number one.

Ken. The David Foster that did some writing on "Time & a Word" would later be the singer, bassist of Tony Kaye's post-Yes band Badger. A British songwriter/musician completely unrelated to the American pop producer of the same name.

Just wanted to pass on some info that I discovered today. Echolyn has an active Kickstarter campaign up to raise money to finish two albums set for release in March of 2025. I trust a good percentage of those watching the Prog Seat would be interested. The Kickstarter is over in 18 days and is only about 60% subscribed. Apologies to anyone who thinks this is inappropriate; I am just excited for new music from one of my favorite bands.

Huh. I had no idea. If the Prog Seat guys don't know, they definitely should. I know they're all waiting for the album. Thanks for sharing!

4. In the Wake of Poseidon. A weak album for all the reason mentioned. A rehash of the debut with very few surprises. 3. Tarkus. I'm in the minority that likes side 2 better than side 1. I just cannot get to like the suite. It's awful and jarring, it's like a 20 minutes long fart. I do love the jazzy textures of side 2 ruined of course by the silly songs. Of the golden ELP era, Tarkus is at the bottom. 2. Time and a Word. A solid album for me. The inclusion of orchestra seems to me like a way to compensate for the limitations of Banks and Kaye, and does the trick for me. I think is quite under rated. 1. Trespass. Solid album from beginning to end although I'm a heretic. Not a fan of White Mountain or The Knife. The epics for me are Looking For Someone, Visions of Angels, and Stagnation. Louis can go eat a bag of, you know, because the pastoral elements in Genesis are always great, not lame. Honourable mentions: Camel Mirage and Pink Floyd A Saucerful of Secrets.

Wow! Some Great choices Here! #1 is King Crimson "In The Wake of Of Possidein" = Beautifull! #2 is YES "Time and a Word" = Very Underrated! #3 ELP "TARKUS" = Why? I don't Reallly know.. Because it is ELP! #4 Genesis "Trespass" Because it is Old Gabriel Genisiis! = Quite Stupid, but Genious! All of these things are IMHO!

Tarkus was developed from a 5/8 rhythm idea that Carl Palmer had been working on. Emerson just took that idea and ran with it. Also, it's not quite true that Palmer could not read music. Palmer did have some formal training which he continued with while a member of ELP. He mentions very early on that he could read percussion charts and that he did read music at a very limited degree. Great show. My list would go: 1) ELP: Tarkus is so great and so far ahead of anything else off the other albums that track alone puts it first. 2) Genesis 3) Yes 4) King Crimson
@ciciusss8 сағат бұрын
Just to follow up on my original post, Palmer received drum lessons for several years from Tony Cunliffe. At the age of 15 Palmer was playing in a Big Band, which is where he really developed his skill in reading percussion charts. Palmer also studied classical percussion from James Blades and continued his percussion training at the Guildhall Music School while in ELP. Also, his grandmother was a classical violinist in the symphony. Palmer stated he took formal violin lessons while growing up. That is where he developed the ability to read music, but at a very elementary level.

One of these albums I sold aeons ago, so it ranks fourth by default. I go: 1. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus (Unlike a number of people, I love the album from top to bottom.) 2. King Crimson - In the Wake of Poseidon (Yeah, we all know what the biggest knock against this one is, but I have always loved it.) 3. Genesis - Trespass (It's a great sophomore effort; the haunt count on here is pretty high, as was usual with early Genesis. Even so, better things lay ahead.) 4. Yes - Time and a Word (Didn't think TaaW was anything special when I first heard it. Got rid of it shortly thereafter. I'll admit upon revisiting it for this episode's 'album war' that it sounded better than I remembered it. Enough to make me want to put it back in the collection? Not really.) On this one, my sentiments align most with Ken's, and about nearly everything. There could have been something contrived, perhaps even formulaic, about the way ELP contrasted the more 'serious' pieces with the more light-hearted tracks, but like Ken, I've never had a problem with this; I was good with the eclecticism on display. But one thing that often seems to get overlooked by those who _do_ have problems with it is the fact that the guys in the band didn't just listen to (and love) classical and jazz; they had a genuine love for early rock/rhythm and blues, but also things like ragtime, boogie, etc. Emerson loved all these things, as did many who grew up during the time in which he did. Could it have all been a tactic employed to offset any accusations of 'pompousness'? Maybe. To help the albums go down easier for more people? Possibly. Whatever the motivations, the genuine love they had for many kinds of music was there; they were - both individually and collectively - influenced by many things, and those influences were reflected on the albums. The guys in ELP chose to utilize them a little more than the others of these four bands, and I wouldn't have it any other way. (Side note: compare "Are You Ready Eddy?" with Little Richard's "The Girl Can't Help It.") Long post. Great episode.

Firstly I just made a Spotify playlist of these since I don't know every album so well, but my initial picks: 4. Genesis - Trespass - I need to get more familiar with this era of Genesis. I love Nursey Cryme & later. 3. K.C. - In the Wake of Poseidon - I love Court, but only know a few tracks from this one, need to really absorb it which I plan on. 2. Yes T&AW - Of these 3 albums so far this one Ive listened to most, love just about every song. Esp Sweet Dreams & title track. 1. Tarkus - I heard the last 3-4 minutes of the title cut on a college station on Xmas eve maybe 10 years ago and was like "WTF IS THIS??!!!" I literally pulled it up on Amazon & ordered a copy on the spot. I agree with the panel some songs are a bit goofy, tho I love Bitches, but it doesn't matter. Tarkus is a prog masterpiece!

Nobody mentioned the left out track Oh My Father, featured a great guitar /hendrix inspired solo, put that track in for the 2 (jeremy bender/ ready eddy) then it would be a solid album on par with Yes ( close to the edge)

What's with all the crap about Steve Howe's (and now Peter Banks) having horrible guitar tone? "Fragile", "Close To the Edge", all the way up to "Drama" are some of the all-time great albums for prog guitar, and the guitars sound excellent. And "tone", singular, is spoken of like Howe only used one tone. He used a colorful array of different tones & sounds on every album.
