Among my best memories are of my mom driving my sister and me to school, with the 8-track playing at any given moment Jim Croce, Simon & Garfunkel, Seals & Crofts, Bread, Diana Ross and the Carpenters. Brings back to memory the scene from Tommy Boy, where the late great Chris Farley and David Spade are driving cross country and the radio starts playing the Carpenters' Superstar. Priceless.

Enjoyed this show immensely. Just like the HVS show of Guilty Pleasures and the earlier In The Prog Seat show of what you don't care for, this show gives us a little insight into just how wide and how deep the love of music runs with all the Prog Seat squares. Until the end, didn't think I would have anything George might mention but the Dirt by Alice in Chains came to my attention from some earlier SoT shows. And love Luis' attitude about WTF, no guilt about what he listens to and enjoys. But the personal winner for me is Steven and his love for TV themes and movie music as well. Have been peppered so often with questions like "Why do you have a CD of TV theme shows?" and "Why do you keep trying to learn and playing piano bits from movies and TV", Steven spoke well for my love of that as well. Spoke to some pleasures on the HVS similar show but my music love runs far and wide since I studied classical piano for years and grew up in a house where Dad liked Dixieland jazz and played classical violin, upright bass, banjo and piano and Mom liked the big band era and singers like Sinatra, Bennett, Doris Day, Judy Garland, etc. and played piano and organ. But for one who does love a lot of prog, have a strong tendency towards Power Pop [the Raspberries, The Wondermints, Cheap Trick, etc.], the blues [Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, Big Mama Thornton, etc.], classical [particularly Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky], 60s garage rock [mostly singles here but check out the boxed set Nuggets] and, more currently, a listening and following of Lady Gaga. There's a lot more - including much of what was mentioned in this show - but it's all good. Thanks for the fun, everyone, and as alway, thanks to Pete for the lists he posted.

Great, great show! Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is an absolute modern masterpiece. To anyone who wouldn't give it the time of day based on it being hip-hop, I'd say just give it a chance. Headphones, the full works. There's a great vintage funk and jazz foundation on that album. The grooves! That bassline on 'King Kunta'! Ernie Isley, George Clinton guesting. Kendrick Kamar himself is an absolute master at what he does. Great mention of Richard Thompson from Chuck! Always appreciate a mention of Richard. Genuinely one of the best and most original guitarists around. A fantastic witty guy with a verrrry dry sense of humour makes his live shows a must, aside from the incredible musicianship. Also check out his live cover of Britney's Oops I Did It Again, complete with "medieval" guitar break! If we're just picking big popular artists, I'd go for.. This is a re-edited post from my Facebook page. There are no bad answers to what we all listen to outside the norm. For this segment, I played it safe with music which would catered to many of the masses of the show's subjected premises. Growing up in the South Bronx, I was very fortunate to had been witness to the birth of Hip-Hop, yet I decided to leave that out yet always willing to discuss albums that should pique the interest of the open minded listener. Kudos to all of my SOT Mates with nothing but awesome picks. I know that many have questions of a "Guilty Pleasure" yet in theory it's more like, "what do you listen to and enjoy outside the SOT Prog realm...?" and as you see we've all scratched the surface of what makes up all individuals. Great job Gents, an awesome show.

I should add one name to my previous list. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, a UK synthpop duo that is known in the States for their 1986 hit If You Leave from the Pretty In Pink movie. But Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys became huge in Europe in the early 80s. On their first four albums they were goundbreaking, experimental and influential. Although they had immediate hit succes, the deep cuts from those albums are worth discovering. Synthesizers never sound cold or robotic on OMD albums: they are moody, melancholic and have a certain degree of warmth. Their 1981 Architecture & Morality album is considered to be their classic album. And if you're still reading, I can tell you that the unique OMD sound was obtained by using mellotrons (the early prog instrument par exellence) next to synthesizers. Go check it out. You might be suprised that this was the same band that wrote If You Leave.

Nice with the Kendrick Lamar. As for Radiohead, I’d recommend The Bends to get started, and go chronologically from there. Context is pretty important when looking at their catalogue.

The Bangles are super under rated as a band. I mean they sold millions of albums but everyone sees them as pop but they can jam. Doll Revolution is a good album. When they first got back together in the late 90’s they did an MTV concert that was real good. I also love their version of Hazy Shade of Winter.

My guilty pleasures (today 🙂) 1: Barry Gray. His scores made Gerry Anderson a ton of money; Thunderbirds is my favourite program and soundtrack. 2: Sandy Denny. What a voice, taken far too young. 3: John Barry. His film scores are legendary. 4: Gene Clark. Just wow. 5: Janis Ian. Stunning vocals and lyrics.

Funny thing regarding Rick's story of discovering Stevie Wonder because my story is almost exactly the same. I first heard Stevie Wonder by checking out his records from the library. So, my introduction to Stevie was Innervisions and Fulfillingness' First Finale the pinnacle of his music. Which was, you know, not too shabby. Also, I was surprised at many of these choices because they didn't really strike me as guilty pleasures. To me a guilty pleasure is something you wouldn't want people to know you listen to like all the goofy stuff I listened to before I got hip to the really strong stuff. To me guilty pleasures are: The Partridge Family, The Osmond Brothers, Bobby Sherman, KISS (sorry Pete), Carpenters, Captain & Tennelle, The Bay City Rollers. The really embarrassing stuff!

I'm in my late-50s now so I really don't feel guilty about anything I listen to anymore (but I certainly did when I was younger), but as a lifelong lover of metal and hard rock, there are a few other things that I've always loved from the beginning. 1. '70s R&B and Soul. From Stevie Wonder to the Spinners to Lou Rawls to the Temptations and beyond.... 2. Glenn Campbell. Not a fan of country but I've always really enjoyed Mr. Campbell. 3. '70s soft rock....and I mean really soft. Whether it's Bread or England Dan & John Ford Coley or whatever. 4. Reggae. Don't know why but it just clicks with me. I've been to more than a few Reggae shows from local groups all the way to Peter Tosh. If I hear Reggae coming out of a beach bar (I live in S. Florida), that's probably where I'm going for brews. 5. Great vocal performances by women. Madonna or Dionne Warwick, Sarah Mclaughlin or Barbara Streisand and so forth....I don't necessarily love everything by them but there's plenty that I really enjoy.

Great show and many great picks! Here are mine that come to mind: - Level 42 - I have many albums (and there are prog connections to the band... ;) - Sade - I like the first 3 albums - Yello - I have many albums. The music is classy and sophisticated but humorous at the same time. - Bee Gees - I really like the first 4 albums plus a few more before they went disco. - The Monkees - I have the first album. I liked the show when I was a kid. * Some honorable mentions: - Tom Jones - I got one album from the 60s. He is "old school cool". Great voice! - Art Of Noise - I have many albums and EPs. - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream & Other Delights (fascinated by the album cover since I was young... I like the music too, sort of cheesy but well done. It makes me smile!) - Compilation - This Is Cult Fiction (A cool compilation of TV and film themes. I really like a lot of theme music from the 60s and 70s...)

I am most definitely a progmetal fanatic, but I grew up listening to 70s and 80s radio. All of you had some outstanding picks, many of which I also like. Trying not to repeat any already noted, here are the five non-prog/metal artists that I would pick. 1 - The Monkees (these guys just don't get enough respect) 2 - ABBA (pure pop, anyone?) 3 - k.d. lang (more specifically Ingenue, which is just an amazing album) 4 - Chuck Mangione/Herb Alpert (yes, cheating by putting in two, but both have put out some phenomenal stuff) 5 - Pigeons Playing Ping Pong (funk band and if you've never heard of them, you really should give them a try) edit: Meant to add, you have a new subscriber; just found this channel; looking forward to watching more.

There is a legend that says that Christopher Cross filled in for Richie Blackmore in the early 70's in San Antonio when Deep Purple was touring and Richie was sick. Of course that may just be a legend. And of course Dan Fogelberg was a tremendous musician. I saw him live twice. Once at Beacon Theater in early 90's with his band. And then Nassau Coliseum in 1982 when he toured as a solo artist. Just guitar, piano and a microphone. He really was a great musician. The Innocent Age is probably one of my favorite records. Not just because of the hits from that record. But everything on it is great. In The Passage is tremendous.

Excellent picks from everyone. I mentioned a bunch of artists/bands that I love that are outside of the content of this channel in the comments of a previous video. One glaring omission is Texas blues based guitarist Doyle Bramhall II. He is an artist that in my opinion hasn't put out one bad song. His second album Jellycream is an absolute electric blues classic. Eric Clapton even stated it was the best blues album he heard in years when he was introduced to it. He played with Clapton, Waters, Sheryl Crow, and host of other artists. Also in Arc Angels. Check him out.

In the UK Jim Croce’s biggest success was Time In A Bottle, released as a single in 1973, not long after he died. It’s simply gorgeous, written as a tribute to his wife. Another taken far too young 😢.

Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas. I have probably played this album more than any other one I have. From Thanksgiving until New Years every year for the past 25 years or so, it has been in constant rotation. I love a lot of Christmas music, but this is such a special combination of quiet celebration and contemplation of the season. Love it. (And at risk of driving Mr. Reid mad, I can't get through the holidays without a fairly constant diet of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, by Wizzard.)

I'm glad to hear Jim Croce mentioned here, although very briefly. The man deserves a deep dive of all 4 (technically his first album was a duet album with his wife Ingrid and I have it on vinyl) of his awesome albums. Outstanding lyricist and amazing guitar work by his friend and touring partner. My father handed me a 2 cd anthology in 2007 and it was then I decided I needed a guitar and started singing and writing my own songs. His Debut album with some of his biggest hits on it would for sure be in my 10 desert island album list, absolutely beautiful personality like, and he did not get to live to see his widespread fame/popularity worldwide. Much love for the work he managed to put out in 3 awesome albums.

A couple of all-women groups of the '80's: I instantly rooted for, and liked the GoGo's partly because I heard their origin story, that gals at the office decided to form a band, etc. (ah, people like me, I thought!) But I was critical of the Bangles because I just ASSUMED they were a marketing invention. They looked like models, their first big hit was written by someone else (Prince), "They probably don't even play their own instruments" I sniffed. Walk Like an Egyptian blew me away, but I assumed it was a fluke and still clung to my disapproving thoughts. Eventually I dug in and really listened, and I fucking ADORE the Bangles, Shame on me for my MADE UP critical thoughts!! Now that is what I call GUILTY. NEVER AGAIN. The Bangles RULE.
