Great Show! Bill Nelson is perhaps the most prolific musical artist on this planet. He has provided us with top notch albums, at least two every year, for decades and continues this amazing output, each release a revelation of his unending talent and prowess. Interesting episode once more, gentlemen. Thank you very much. And guess what: Steve picked my all time favourite Mike Oldfield solo: Incantations, first half of part 3. I'm not a progrocker or jazz fusion wizzard, but I enjoy it when people talk with a lot of passion about music. Besides that I'm learing from you, guys. That said: I'm a huge Mike Oldfield fan (from Tubular Bells onto The Songs Of Distant Earth). So I picked my 10 favourite Mike Oldfield solo's or guitar moments for those people who know Oldfield only as the young guy that once made Tubular Bells and kept repeating his debut album throughout his career. In chronological order. Tubular Bells (1973) the wobbling opening minutes of part 2 Hergest Ridge (1974) the middle section of part 2 also known as the thunderstorm section Ommadawn (1975) the heart breaking guitar solo during the finale of part 1 Incantations (1976) the one Steve picked: Mike's aching guitar improvisations in the first half of part 3 Platinum (1979) Oldfields pure technique in North Star (aka Platinum IV) QE2 (1980) Mirage or maybe in the live version that can be heard on The Complete (1985) 2LP compilation Crises (1983) the European hit single Moonlight Shadow where he shows he is a master of both the acoustic and electric guitar Discovery (1984) Poison Arrows where he blends again acoustic with electric playing Amarok (1990) the fast sped opening sequence Heaven's Open (1991) Music From The Balcony where he introduces some jazz fusion elements in his sound For people who know Tubular Bells but who (especially in the US) are not familiar with his early 80's work: give Crises (1983) a listen. You get the side long title track with beautiful guitar tones, a brilliantly drumming Simon Phillips (who co-produced the album) and an astonishing synth finale. On side 2 you will find the Europan hits Moonlight Shadow (with angelic voiced Maggie Reilly) and Shadow On The Wall (with Roger Chapman). You get synth driven songs like In High Places (with Jon Anderson) and Foreign Affair (co-written by Maggie Reilly). And there is Taurus 3, a short instrumental all acoustic piece of hard rock.

Great picks. Exquisite taste on Pete's part (and everyone's) giving love to Tommy Bolin, Bill Nelson, Frank Zappa, Martin Barre (oft forgotten) and Gary Green. And kudos to Anthony for keeping everyone hydrated. The first one that popped into my head was Steve Howe's solo on the studio version of Roundabout. So let's see... Bill Nelson/Be Bop Deluxe/Crying To The Sky Tommy Bolin/Marching Powder Frank Zappa/Black Napkins/Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy/Muffin Man/Pick Me I'm Clean/Inca Roads (Live) Steve Morse/Dixie Dregs - Hereafter Steve Tibbetts/Yr Robert Fripp/Brian Eno - Baby's On Fire Virtually any guitar solo on any phase 1 Steely Dan track.

Spot on About Alan Holdsworth, Pete! I always enjoyed his work with other bands because his guitar meshes perfectly with other folks' compositions. His restrained playing produces emotions from an instrument that is unparalleled by anyone, as is attested to by pretty much every guitar virtuoso in the business. I've never seen a guitarist showered with respect and affection by other guitarists, all of whom are considered virtuosos in their own right. His guitar BREATHES...

Andy Latimer is certainly one of the most sublime guitar players ever and one track that goes under the radar is 'For Today' from the 'Nod and a Wink' album is a lost gem amongst Andy Latimer solos. I played it about 6 times after I watched this show..There are two solos split by a keyboard solo, but the moment from 5' 56" is just the most heart wrenching beauty that can bring you to tears. It was written in memory of those that died in the 9/11 tragedy.

Good to see Guthrie getting plenty of love. I’ve known him since I worked in Chandler Guitars in Kew 25 years ago, a beautiful person and simply the greatest guitarist on earth. That guitar on Regret #9 he borrowed from us at Fender from our London AR cente at the legendary John Henry’s rehearsal complex. He wanted some a bit more ‘Stratty’ so he pulled that off the wall , took it to the studio, did what you see in the video, and then brought it back and it went back on the wall . When we closed that center I was going to buy it, didn’t of course, but wish I had. Holdsworth meets Gilmour, he’s a legend.

There is sooooo much more to music than technique. In some ways, as long as you don't make mistakes, it's the least important aspect. Composition, melody, rhythm, dynamics, moods, quirks, all are more important. I agree that Mike Oldfield excels in all of these. Plus he is very technically competent. He plays a lot with beautifully manicured nails. Like Steve Howe, he realizes that simplicity is appropriate and he doesn't let ego get in the way. Shredding alone is boring. Shred is a spice and needs to be applied only where appropriate. So many solos today, especially "prog" metal, sound like listening in to a practice session: scales and exercises.

Top five guitar solos? An impossible task! LOL! I love guitar, and listen daily to my favorites from a large variety of genres, so I applaud the topic. I only just recently came across your channel, after having watched your review of the 5 worst prog albums of all time. Well done lads! So, for my five cents worth, I wrote down the first five solos that came to my mind. 5, Steve Vai, “Blue Powder”, a wonderful piece that I first heard when I bought the Guitar Player magazine with the flexi disk in it. His technical prowess is not what makes it so important to me, but rather his creativity and emotional content. I was overjoyed when he eventually released it on “Passion and Warfare”. 4, Jeff Beck, “Where Were You?”. This piece is so moving, beautiful, his touch is unequaled. A true giant. 3, Shawn Lane, “Rice With The Angels”, (the version on the Personae live album, it has that cool Eric Johnson lick thrown in!) he is one of the most technically gifted and immensely talented guitarists I have ever seen live, tragically his life has ended too soon, I get goosebumps listening to his playing, as Paul Gilbert has said, “Shawn Lane, the most terrifying of the terrifying guitarists!” 2, Allan Holdsworth, “Peril Premonition”. To pick one Holdsworth solo, when there are so many amazing ones, remember “Devil Take the Hindmost” for example, is ridiculously hard, but this one has this amazing build up and release of the tension so characteristic of his style. Ever since I first heard it, I Iong to hear someone play it on the sax, that would be a trip! I could listen to his entire solo discography all in a row, no breaks, then go and listen to all of the amazing albums he is on with other artists, that first UK album, one of my all time favorite releases, I just never get tired of him, for me, I think he is the most unique guitarist that I have ever heard, he is my favorite guitarist, tied with one other . . . Uli Roth. 1, Uli, “I’ll be There”. His playing has always been amazing, I have been listening to him since I first heard the Scorpions “Fly to the Rainbow” album. I think that Uli always strove to create the best compositions possible, with wonderful tone, and technique that was in the service of the piece, not for its own sake. He is tied with Allan for the top spot for me. Anyway, keep up the great work and I look forward to more brain food from your channel! kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2q7gY2jZ5ehkLM
