During the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, United Nations personnel in Lebanon came under a number of attacks.
On 25 July 2006, four unarmed United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) observers were killed in an Israeli air strike on a UN observation post in southern Lebanon.
Before the air strike, UN observers in Lebanon had telephoned the Israel Defence Forces 10 times in six hours to ask it to stop shelling near their position.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had said that the attack on the observation post in the Lebanese town Khiam was apparently deliberate: "... shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces."
