This film, made in 1968, was based on the novel by Morris West, which envisaged a scenario whereby a Ukrainian Catholic leader called Kiril Lakuta was released from the Gulag and ended up as Pope. It was inspired by the real case of the head of the suppressed Ukrainian Catholic Church, Metropolitan Iosyf Slipyi, who was released from the Gulag in 1963 and transported to Rome, where he was named a cardinal. The appearance of this modern day martyr at Vatican Council II caused a sensation.

I could not agree more with you in regards to the Academy. I did not even watch the show this year. In 2003, Academy did award Peter O'Toole a lifetime achievement Oscar. I recall watching his acceptance speech saying "always a bridesmaid, but never a bride, my foot!" He said he wasn't finished yet and might earn one outright.

No. To give up all Church properties and possessions could probably be considered a tiny bit short of apostasy. Not only are these possessions sacred and should thus be protected by the Church (lest they be sold and melted down for cash or other such petty currencies) but things like land and buildings are absolutely necessary for priests and religious to operate in and/or out of, especially in administration of the Sacraments. Although it would not dissolve the spiritual Church (the Mystical Body of Christ), it would most certainly dissolve the temporal Church and its functionality as a hierarchy and external institution.

This just reflects the ingenuity of those times. If the Church did that it would endanger all their charity works and misionary works. Also, it would be for nothing, because humans will take the benefit but not change in anything. They would even ask for more, being entitled. We see it nowadays, when the reality is that we are owed nothing and we deserve nothing: we are dignified because God dignified us. Otherwise, we are just animals.

@gunnarthorsen3 жыл бұрын
The wealth of the church isn't the pope's to dispense with. Works of art are in Vatican museums for all to enjoy. The present pope has even authorized museum tours for the homeless of Rome in addition to meals, because the mind and soul must be fed as well as the body. Items in museum collections, as well as books and manuscripts, are available for study by researchers and experts from all over the world. All of these things are the collective religious and cultural heritage of Catholics and the world in general. The wealth of the church also funds the WORK of the church, in all it's aspects. It can be used to alleviate hunger but it can no more be given away to feed the hungry - along with holdings and investments that make that possible - than can the wealth of the United States or any country be parted with to do the same. Wealth in private hands is and can be used for the good - a fact that socialists and communists refuse to accept.

@@Guitcad1 Popes in the past were absolute rulers, with troops to back them up. Today, popes confer with bishops and others before making pronouncements, and the only pronouncements that Catholics are really obligated to obey are those touching on matters of faith and doctrine. Carbon Buster The Catholic church if not being the largest source of charity in the world is certianly among them; In the field of healthcare, the Church’s worldwide charity and healthcare centers include (beyond hospitals and clinics) 18,179 dispensaries; 547 institutions for people with leprosy; 17,223 homes for the elderly, the chronically ill or people with a disability; 9,882 orphanages; 11,379 infant childcare centers; 15,327 marriage counseling offices; 34,331 social rehabilitation centers; and 9,391 charitable institutions of other kinds. But I doubt even this is enough for some people. I wonder how many hospitals and orphanages are run by atheist groups?
@heru-deshet3599 жыл бұрын
Carbon Buster I think the Catholic Church may be financially vested in Rome or rather the Vatican. Catholic parishes throughout the world fend for them selves. The Vatican does spend money on special programs, but it's up to each Parrish to take care of itself. The Vatican does have a fortune, but I think it's in treasures of artwork, monuments, etc, rather than liquid assets.

Why cannot the great and powerful see that, in the case of such grave transgressions as these, one cannot have the forgiveness of God unless, as a bare minimum prerequisite, one also shows courage by confessing the full truth of one’s offenses to the temporal authorities and submitting oneself to earthly punishment?

It is interesting though that Pope Benedict XVl when he was a Cardinal in 1969 wrote that 1968 was the worst year in modern history for infiltration of all aspects of life by Satan. Benedict also predicted this downfall of the Catholic Church and that eventually there would be notrhing at all left of it. He was not writing a movie though and concluded that only Jesus Christ will remain, and Catholics whoever survives will have to start all over again in the properr way that Jesus snd his Apostles left for them! That means putting down their weapons and exchanging them for plowshares and never again learning how to make war! As it is the Church is already looking worse and worse in the eyes of the world because of it's gross imbalances regarding everything!!!
