Team owner Junior Johnson, Crew Chief Tim Brewer, and driver Tommy Ellis were suspended following the All-Star race for using a slightly oversized engine that measured 361.856 cubic inches of displacement; the maximum allowed is 358.
The engines in all 20 cars in The Winston were inspected after the race. The one in Johnson's car, driven by Tommy Ellis, measured big immediately. It was allowed to cool, and still didn't meet specifications. NASCAR held the car overnight, and it still measured too large that morning. A NASCAR insider said "that small a discrepancy doesn't amount to much . . . maybe six horsepower at most."

Tim Brewer, the guy who always seemed to win that best mechanic award. I miss all those little awards they used to have an they either have gone away or never get a mention and I so want them to come back, the Western Auto Mechanic of the Race, the hard charger award, the halfway challenge and the ten grand that went with that, the contests ESPN and so on used to run where a lucky fan would win a sweet, sweet car...

Nitrous was only good for qualifying ....to ensure you had the speed to make the show. No engine would last very long trying to use Nitrous during the race.

It's like Waddell Wilson said on the other channel the other day. He put together an engine and had no idea which crankshaft he even threw in it. Depending upon the block and its bore sizing, a stock crankshaft can still be illegal.

Jamin, what happened to the team that qualified with that same engine? They enjoyed the same advantage. Thanks for the post.

When Tim Brewer tells the story he doesn’t say when J.V Reins was told. I don’t know if it was the All-Star race, or earlier in the season, so I couldn’t be more specific. However, Brewer is emphatic, saying he had a source working for NASCAR doing the engine checks, who told him J.V was warned about that engine. How Sterling was able to use it and qualify, I’m assuming it did not get checked in the same manner as in the post race. Also, when it failed post race inspection for the 11 car, I guess Brewer wasn’t about to throw the 22 under the bus and cause more issues, so he didn’t mention it was the engine the 22 qualified with..lol. Then again he may have been so angry that he did and NASCAR thought, well it wasn’t raced in the 22. The way Brewer tells the story, and take it for what it’s worth, if someone else, he never says who, was holding the calculator besides John Darby, it would not have turned out the way it did. I don’t about that, I think NASCAR was waiting to send a message to the teams for some reason, and this was a perfect opportunity.

Tim Brewer, straight forward, interesting, and always entertaining when telling a story. You left out completely full of himself and considers everyone else beneath him.

Don't get me wrong, I've always liked Tim Brewer........but there's no denying there isn't a single man in nascar history who loved to brag on himself as much as Tim does, lol.

Brewer didn’t want to use the JD Raines engine because his motors never lasted over 50 or so laps before they would blow!
