I am Dominican born of Dominican parents in the USA. I was raised in the Dominican Republic and remember writing papers about the sisters growing up during my years of schooling in DR. I realized my maternal grandfather was in the Army during Trujillo's era and he was a sergeant. My paternal grandfather was an ambassador. But it's not like the two of them had any love for Trujillo. Because first things first, in Trujillo's regime, you were automatically working for him. However, my father in his early teens was a sympathizer of the resistance known as Movimiento 14 de Junio and he marched with them in the mid-60s during the revolution of April.

He fell in love with one of the sisters, and was completely distraught by finding out that she was dating an opposition militia group trying to oust him from government, they eventually became his vengeance payback. Sad story out of plot is the family relationship between the dictator and the Hermanas Mirabal..Are they distant cousins with whom he wanted to compromise.

I was reading the book at school and I loved it so much, so i decided to watch the movie

What is truly interesting, to those who actually watched for reasons other than an English assignment, and who are truly interested in the political history of the Dominican Republic, is that the man who followed Trujillo in the presidency, in the long run, was actually a highly placed government official in the latter part of Trujillo's 30 year reign over the country; this, of course, was not covered in this movie as it would actually require another movie to do so. In Joaquin Balaguer's Time would probably be an adequate title. Many said Balaguer sported a different, yet similar, brand of dictatorship. This man was reelected 7 times for the presidency (from 1966- 1996, with several years rest in between). I remember growing up in DR and seeing this man, Balaguer, in the news giving away food bags to the poor, instead of jobs or worthy wages. In a similar fashion, Trujillo did the same. There were also many killings and disappearances during Balaguer's early years, as there were during Trujillo's time. Most Dominicans agree there was corruption in at least the last elections (late 80s into the late 90s), when many Dominicans no longer wanted him in power. What kind of country is going to allow a man to be re-elected 7 times???? None... it would almost be as if the belief was that there aren't any other qualified men or women to run for presidency... Hello!!!!????? There was definitely foul play in those elections. But as we tell of the unworthy, we must make mention of the things worth mentioning... in his passion to immortalize his name, Balaguer did significantly contribute to the country's infrastructure (highways, etc), modernized the main cities by spending a lot of the country's money in construction, some of it good_ as he built housing for the poor, re-built or fixed and beautified landmarks... although to this day, there is still a struggle with the continuous blackouts, thus, not all of this wonders can be truly appreciated at night... Perhaps some of the money that went into construction should have been set aside to re-build the electrical power supply infrastructure of the country instead. And in case there are any Balaguer lovers out there, who will refer to the presidents that followed as well as the present government as not being necessarily any better... save your breath and don’t bother with a nasty reply as I also agree with you. Corruption has a strong hold on DR's government.

I'm watching this because my niece had a cartoon book about them in her book bag last year so I did my research on them and got interested in their story and empowerment. I've always loved learning about political anti oppression leaders so the fact that I never knew about them until last year is beyond me and the fact that I just found out they had a WHOLE movie with my girl Salma is VERY beyond me. People really need to watch this movie, especially in schools I wish my English, history, and spanish teacher made me watch this in highschool. I appreciate your insight to the saga of this episode. It must reflect that women empowerment doesn't necessary have to engage political mainstream without some repercussion in the struggle for power sharing..that just simply means suicide. Children grow up fast that life is what you plan it to be for you and your families, and that goes for the rest of society, otherwise you are living in denial..good lesson of injustices to equip the young minds of children to better their prospects in life, when they become adults, not to repeat the same failure consisting of selfishness, lack of regard for self and humanity..that eventually led to self destruction. More comedy of this type of dictatorship should feature in the curriculum for teenage education as part of history lesson, darest Christina Holmes.

Also that's not what really happened when they died but for the movie sake I guess they didn't want to show the brutal truth of their deaths so they tried to make it less graphic, I understand. The Trujillo's did beat them to death but when the sisters were on their way home from visiting their husbands in jail the Trujillo's took the sisters and driver out the car took em to a secluded area and started strangling them and beating them to death and put their bodies in the jeep and pushed it off a cliff to make it seem like a car crash or car accident.

R.K Collection their husbands were purposely transferred to a further jail facility (in the book it was puerto plata). So they had to travel further to visit their husband. While going back home, a military car ran them off the road and executed them including their driver (you can find all this in the book)

As a Canadian expat this is one of the most tear jerking movies I have ever seen. trials and tribulations of the power of (good)God or Satanic (Evil)forces. This movie is a fine example, the epitome of evil that men do! True stories are my favorite to watch. I would make this mandatory viewing for anyone wanting to live work or retire in the D.R. And if I realize my dream to help design and build the first residential community health and wellness resort in the country I will strongly suggest a Tribute to the Mirabal Sisters by building a butterfly garden museum in their honor to teach all who visit live and work their part of the history arts and culture of the country. And have this film as a main feature showcasing this memorable heart reaching film. Such beautiful passionate and valiant woman you will always be dear to my heart. Rest in Peace my sisters. I look forward to joining you soon in the afterlife.

He ruled as a dictator under martial law from 1972 until 1981 .His regime was infamous for its corruption, extravagance, and brutality. Public outrage led to the snap elections of 1986. Palomino was your underground name. I feel like although African Americans had their hard days in history as far as slavery that is forever respected and never forgotten. Dictatorship over the Dominican Republic was just as hard and the events were just as traumatizing putting aside the fact that they were not in danger of the american people. But were endangered by someone with the same mindset of an american politician, president, governor, mayor, senator, congressmen, representative etc, in America. Seeing el jefe's behavior and train of thought is an exact mirror to the people that represent America. I am a firm believer about diversity. Learning the history of other countries is what educates us on the tragedies this world has caused over poverty, hatred, racism, sexism, greed, social class, power, money/ revenue/ currency, and abusive authority will forever be a marked comparison on not only how far we've come but how so much far we have to go. All race's, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, religion, social classes, genders and ages need to put aside these differences and come together for all officials of all governments, states, capitals, nations, regions and countries have and have also risen against us for their own consumption of greed, power, money and wealth over our lives. Please wake up people.
