I figured he survived because he was just so boring. Think about: The biggest problem with time travel is that the event is likely to change your life. If you didn't do something, then the you that did do that something no longer exist. Instant paradox loop, matter destroyed, dogs and cats getting married, its' all bad. But if you are SO BORING, that even running into your past-future self has no impact on your boring, tedious life, then you can't paradox.
