It's amazing how many painters i work with that disagree with me over the years about this and say it's the other way against the light. Even the Idaho painter believes against the light is best.

If you have light coming into the room from both sides, then the ruling consideration is going to be the entrance point most people will come into the room. In that case you will roll according to the entrance point so that people do not look at the ceiling and notice what months

What if you have a medium-small window with the entrance door on the opposite side, and a bigger sliding door on the adjoining wall? Shouldn't you paint TOWARDS the MAIN source of light...that being the sliding patio door in this case?...
@JulianBG
@JulianBG 5 ай бұрын
I have trouble with that. Is it more accurately to say light source than just window location? Depending whether window faces south, east or west you have completely different direction passing through the window. For example, for north hemisphere, if your room/window faces south, then the sun, when it is the brightest, i.e. through the summer, it is very high, so the light does hit the ceiling directly. However, if you have an window from the east, in the morning you might have a strong light hitting it directly. Back to the window from the south - when the sun goes to the west (sunset) then the light hitting the ceiling, but from strong angle, more parallel to the window, so it looks a better idea to paint in the other direction.

Decent video Spencer. And.correct. when serving my time many moons ago we were always taught to paint away from the light source to hide any imperfections. Good quality tools + quality painter does help. I prefer Hamilton rollers for artex ceilings. Medium/ long pile or nap as you call it. Dependant on how thick the artex is. Have a good day from not so sunny NORTHERN IRELAND. Cheers. 👍🏻👍🏻

I have 2 windows in a corner and a vaulted ceiling so light coming in both directions. I painted the direction of the ceiling going up. It looks amazing from all directions except from the kitty corner angle opposite the windows and the opposite direction across the room looking at one of the windows. Should I repaint the direction the light is coming in. However two corner windows so then maybe that would make the other direction view look worse. Any ideas?

Absolutely Love your videos! No nonsense yet Hilarious - If ya turn Blue start breathing! I do have a question please: Lucky to have 1980's Armstrong ceiling tiles 12 X 12 smooth surface - actually in good shape but do need to be painted; can you recommend any tips for painting them please to make this unfortunate task any easier... Certain Roller Type? - Can I use standard ceiling paint? Thanks for any info!
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 3 жыл бұрын
This is a good question. You do not want water soaking these tiles and therefore I don’t want you to use a water-based product on the first contact with the tiles. So, please prime with oil Kilz original. It’s dense and will bind rather than penetrate deep. Oil will grip snd stay topical. Water is deep snd penetrating. After the oil based Kilz , you can paint it with regular water based ceiling paint. Amd you can roll both products with an oil-friendly roller for the oil primer and a regular roller for the water based ceiling paint. I prefer that you spray both; if not possible, spray at least the oil primer and roll the rest. If not at all possible, then roll both. It’s hard to keep tiles in place when rolling. They usually have to be taken down, Numbered both on the tile and the space where they came from, painted on the floor and put up when dry

I have a cathedral ceiling in livingroom, light coming from north picture window but also 2 entrances, one from east and one from south. Im definitely doing 1 coat one direction then second coat next day perpendicular. Always works to hide from multiple angles and light sources. I like to let first coat, which will be a ceiling primer, dry real well as these ceilings have never been painted before and never knew that😡 when we purchased. They definitely need to be sealed, no stains but went to wipe a killed mosquito and took the texture right off. So pissed. 😢

A decent decorator shouldn’t leave lap marks. however I much prefer rolling width wise regardless of where the window is I prefer it as a finish. Just my preference. kinda like which way you have your wood flooring. It doesn’t matter it’s just personal preference 👍🏻

Spencer, the trick is ,in my opinion, use Ben Moore waterborne ceiling paint. The best ceiling paint ever at $36 per gallon. Roll it on with a 3/4" lambs wool roller. Smooth or texture , works the same. An 18" roller on a ceiling is too difficult to control in my view.

@spencercolgan

Yes, I can prove it. Take your roller and roll parallel with the source of light take a picture of your ceiling in the morning, afternoon, and in the evening; on the next day roll your paint in the perpendicular direction from the one yesterday or the previous day; do the same thing with the pictures and compare. You will be my lavatory experiment
