they know the parasite can adapt. the problem is how fast the imune population will spread and how fast the parasite will adapt. its like a roulette, you can make a estimation, but there is no way to be sure. maybe the numbers will say that the estimate time of the imune population become dominant is higher than the probability of the parasite mutate, but then the improbable happen and one single parasite end up adapting just before the old population is eradicated and suddenly all effort is in vain

Funny enough, I lived in Africa when I was a kid due to my parents being missionaries. I got Malaria once, and that was probably the most miserable week of my life as I felt terrible just standing up, and vomiting was frequent. Though as you can see, I'm not dead, so I suppose that's good. Though a missionary lady that I knew passed away because of Malaria. Personally I wouldn't use the Gene modification for mosquitos though.

@@fernandorobinson8272 It's terrible, yes. But it's avoidable and survivable. It's hard to do either of those in a 3rd world country, but it isn't the only solution. Gene modification is the easy way out, and one of the biggest impacts it'll have is on the food chain. A lot of animals need mosquitoes for food, and I don't know how well they'd do without them.

It's now 2023, and I am very pleased to inform this video that genetic mosquito engineering has been a success in many countries, and I have visited one called "Singapore". This country uses Project Wolbachia, a name they came up with for a project, in which they released thousands of genetically modified male mosquitoes into the surroundings to mate with female mosquitoes and produce harmless offspring. Some versions of the modified mosquitoes completely block off the birth of female mosquitoes by killing them even before they turn into adults. As a result, more male mosquitoes are hatching than female mosquitoes and dengue cases in Singapore are going down rapidly. I am proud of this country and every country in the world that has tried this genetic mosquito project. This might just be what we all need to overcome malaria, dengue, zika and many other diseases mosquitoes have brought horror upon in this world.

I don't understand the "the modified mosquitos die before turning into adults" part. If the modified mosquitos are more likely to die, aren't they just gonna die out and be replaced by normal ones? Like the video says, you don't really want them to die, you want them to spread as much as possible and dominate the species.

the problem is that an "enclosed environment" large enough to properly model it would be huge, costly, take years, and possibly not be accurate because of the lack of other factors like actual humans to bite (and use to spread the disease) among other things. Yall are taking crispr tech too lightly. Theres a reason why they are taking long. Editing genes can have unintended consequences, so much so that instead of malaria, we get a whole new disease which is not curable. A little thing such as this can wipe out humanity. Hence why, it is not used readily. There are lots of amazing thing u can do with it. For ex, making babies who are resistant to hiv virus. But again, every action has a reaction. And till we learn that, its sensible to not use it.
@enderking_132 жыл бұрын
I like how slowly, we are figuring out how to bend the world around us. Instead of adapting to new conditions, we make those conditions into what we are used to, since adapting takes longer. If we keep at a pace of advancing like we currently have(and we probably won’t it should get faster) then probably in the next 10,000 years we can bend reality itself.

While this is elitist af, i am tempted to agree with you on this one.

Under normal circumstances I would not have said something like this. I do believe that the public has a right to voice their opinions but when it's a stupid opinion based on no facts and only speculation then they shouldn't be aloud to hinder progress by complaining about something they know nothing about.
@FoxiestDuck7 жыл бұрын
Only have to take the vaccine public discussion as evidence, that normal people will believe incorrect facts given by a celebrity. The poor scientists that work hard to make a difference and they just get shit on, because their studies don't seem important to the general populace.
@ryanlewis49537 жыл бұрын
While a part of me is inclined to agree that the people who know the most should be in charge. We are talking about modification of a species on a global scale. This has ethical concerns beyond wiping out malaria as the question also arises, where is the line where we stop?. Which is why a public discussion needs to happen. You don't need to know the technical details of how CRISPER works to have an opinion on the ethics. A small section of society that works in labs should not be able to make decisions that have ramifications that affect not just us, but the planet itself.

@robertrosenthal72647 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but incorrect. This video isn't about viruses, so that's a different subject. Also, the vast majority of viruses are not adapted for humans, thus we don't get infected by them, and unless you're a veterinarian, or someone other profession that works a lot with animals, especially sick ones, you won't notice it much. There are entire families of viruses that only attack bacteria. Then it is true that some viruses are very quick to mutate, one obvious example is the influenza virus, but even then, we are slowly figuring out how to target the parts of them that don't and can't mutate like that. If a parasites reservoir species can be made immune before it can find a way around the immunity, it becomes extinct as it no longer has a viable environment to reproduce in.

@theporcupine99938 жыл бұрын
+Mitchell Anthony the question is not wether we should try it or not. the question is when shoukd we use it and is it ready to use, is more research needed ? the fact that we already set off a nuke is a bad argument and false reasoning. its nog because bad things happened we should continue doing things recklessly.
@miklosgergelymorandini23408 жыл бұрын
Your parallel examples fall short in the nature that using a hammer or a nuke is a one time event. Whereas if we introduce this new genome to the genepool it will be self-replicating, and expanding. And we cannot know for sure WHAT will happen exactly.

There are two recent lectures on how to design gene-drives and their respective traits, they are phenotypically reversable, the exact sequence is not. The lectures are labeled "Kevin Esvelt (MIT) 1: Gene Drive" and "Kevin Esvelt (MIT) 2: Gene Drive and Local Drive" here on KZbin

Old video but still relevant, thankyou! Is the sword in the animation a reference to Excalibur? If so, I find it very appropriate.

This needs to become an international discussion, and fast. This kind of technology could have disastrous consequences if used carelessly. Who has the right to modify nature in this way? We all need to agree on the rules of the game before this technology is used. (Edit, since people are mistaking my question for an argument: "Who SHOULD have the right to alter global ecosystems")

I want to end malaria as much as the next guy, but we need to get hyper-vigilant about possible great-filter technologies that might wipe us out or destroy our will to live.

Don't tip the hat too far... a man once did so and it wasnt pretty. A black hole erupted, the 2nd purge began and the pilgrims were resurrected. Lets just say that the tipping of hats is a risk not worth taking.
