While in Tokyo for a long weekend, I visited Sumida Aquarium at Skytree based on recommendations from folks on IG! It was a mind blowing experience seeing Mr. Takashi Amano's nature aquariums. In terms of marine, the Garden Eel display was also nothing short of amazing. I am pretty motivated to somehow incorporate Garden Eels into my 150g build now...

I kept garden eels for years. I had to give them away before I moved. I still miss them so much! In my experience the spotted ones are easier to keep then the splendid (orange ones). The biggest problem is they are afraid of everything. While I have asked a few public aquariums and they've said no. I do suspect they use 2 way glass so the garden eels don't see the people looking at them.

Awesome to hear that you have had long term success with these eels! Any pro tips? I am leaning strongly towards setting up the 150g tank with these guys in mind, especially since the 150g tank is 31" in heigh, should be able to get a beefy sand bottom if necessary.
@captivebredcanada

So if you're going to do the 150 for them you will have to design the tank with them in mind. That means deep sand bed of at least 6" but deeper is better especially since you have a tall tank. So for your rock work you can either raise it up with pvc or just place it on top of the sand. They need to be fed heavily not so much because they eat a lot but because they will only eat food that passes directly over them like you saw in your video. Brine may be needed to get them going but you can start mixing frozen brine and then mysis in with the food and it won't be long until they eat frozen food. I never tried pellets. You will need to have the flow pattern setup so that it passes over them. You will probably have some nitrate / phosphate issues initially but over time your deep sand bed will work as a great natural filter. Over a longer time it may cause issues but we are talking 5+ years in the future so you can deal with it then if you still have the tank setup in this way. When I took my tank down the sand was surprisingly clean. I believe most deep sand beds that have trouble are more in the 4-6" range and having it deeper can potentially make it better. Once they are more comfortable over feeding won't be an issue as long as you have your flow pointed in a way that the food passes over them and doesn't get stuck in a dead spot. Once they are comfortable you can add fish and they will function as cleanup crew. You can keep fish with them but I would wait until they are well established. They are seriously afraid of everything - this is the most important thing to remember. Step away from the tank when you feed them and if you're feeding a big mysis like PE they can even be afraid of them - but they will still eat them. The splendid ones seem to have a longer acclimation time. It is possible they will jump but if they are going to jump it's most likely to happen in the first few hours. They will move holes from time to time but generally stay in the same spot. If you have any further questions let me know. They are really rewarding and I hope to keep them again. Here is a video of some various footage I took of mine from years past. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6jbkntoh7qYjZI

Thank you very much for the valuable information!! I am not sure how I feel about 6"+ sand bed for the 150g (was thinking I could get away with 3-4", but another idea I am itching to act on is set up a separate seahorse / pipefish macro tank that is extra tall in the 45g - 60g range, this dimension may actually work out better with the Garden Eel and I could sacrifice some vertical room for them. The eels I saw at the aquarium were almost desensitized to people, I wonder if they are just really used to visitors or there were one sided glass in place as some of you mentioned (even though I could see through to the other side). Thank you for sharing your video, it is extremely helpful and I may ping you with more questions later on when this starts happening, if it's OK!

It is, but too many of amano’s and people’s aquascaping generally lack that “it” factor. They’re interesting looking but fail to be real art. The Garden Eel tanks are fabulous tho. Just my opinion.

Awesome video thanks for sharing your experience. Looks like you both had a great time. Btw I still have a couple of MH - T/5 combos in my back stock room. The only reason I stopped using them was the expense in replacing bulbs and heat. I believe even with all the tech advances in the last 10-12 yrs it is hard to beat this combo. I really like your enthusiasm. Look forward to the next video!

I know its been two years since you posted this but this is a great video. Look at the aquascaping here. Freshwater aquascapers have been crushing marine aquascapers for a long time. Exactly what I been talking about on my own channel. But even the marine aquascapes at this place are awesome. Marine hobbyist need to stop buying every coral they can and start thinking creatively.
