I have a fairly large mangrove tree and completely agree with you on treating it as its own entity. Proper acclimation is crucial for its success in the beginning, along with providing a strong, full-spectrum light and ensuring the roots are in suitable media, like sand or Miracle Mud. In my experience, spraying the leaves doesn’t make much of a difference. However, when transitioning to a stronger light, it’s important to gradually increase the intensity instead of going full blast, as that can cause leaf burn. I also keep my tank same as you with the water changes etc but i don't have a lot of corals just couple mushrooms and 2 clowns. but probably next year i am going to make a few changes regarding that.

Thank you for the additional mangrove tips, I appreciate it! Btw, do you notice any difference when using Miracle Mud? I have been curious about that product for a long time.
@ashirrizvi53567 күн бұрын
@InappropriateReefer I personally have not used miracle mud with my mangrove, but I have read online miracle mud, and Fiji mud can add biodiversity to the tank and they release small amounts of elements in the tank and it's good for rooting plants. My mangrove is in just sand, and it's thriving.

I think if we consider the ratio of tank to the size of the mangrove, I'm pretty sure your tank is getting cleaned very thoroughly by the mangrove. There's A LOT of roots in there and lots of leaves on the tree. That thing is working overtime! Great stuff.

All of his top off water is probably going to the mangrove as well

Aquarium center was one of my favorite places to go. Was so inspiring. Sad they are gone. At least we have House of tropicals.

For me definitely a mixture. I don’t want the complexity of the big tank, nor just the easy corals of the mangrove tank. A mixed tank that simply runs with All for Reef and no need for weekly tests or water changes would do. I just like lps and softies, not need for any sps

What would be a good bulb for a mangrove I have 2 for about a year and it seems that they haven't grown at all
@InappropriateReefer7 күн бұрын
They don't seem especially picky as long as the light is not all blue? I'd just treat it as plants that they are, offer plants grow light and see if that makes a difference. Also consider root-tab in the sand

how about Kh and Ca, there are a lot LPs in there, are they gonna influence the chemistry?
@InappropriateReefer7 күн бұрын
Honestly I have not checked and all those LPS are relatively recent. I don't plan on doing Alk/Ca check on this tank though, as I think even my low-frequency water change would probably be enough to replenish the Kh & Ca. I may change my tune if I see the corals beginning to suffer down the road. In the past I have done AllForReef dosing for nano tank and liked it, so if I have to dose I may go back to that.

@ This is really interesting! I have a 6-gallon Pico LPS tank. The KH will go from 8 to 6 in a week! I wonder if euphyllia coral simply doesn't absorb much Ca and KH compared to other LPS?

I potted my mangrove roots in a tupperware to constrain it a bit to keep the roots from overtaking my lowboy. Probably no the best for the tree but more concerned about my tank.

Hi , can you share with me some tips . How to make Xenia to pulse? I have Xenia in my tank , however it is not able to pulse at all.
@IronDruids4 күн бұрын
I don't know how much the upfront costs were, but it sounds like that tank is very cheap to maintain now that it's set up.

I’m getting out of the hobby. I can’t seem to get the water chemistry correct. 3 tanks in a row now all turn into a giant bloom of green algae, and all the corals die. I’m really handy at building tanks. Sumps, plumbing, Refugium, you name it. Ive built a few custom tanks. I think I enjoy building a tank more than maintaining it. Nice seeing people know what they’re doing…. Unlike me!!!
@formallydehyde8 күн бұрын
I've only been in this hobby a couple years but the two main things I've seen that prevent insane green algal blooms are using as much live rock as possible and carefully picking a good clean up crew for the tank's needs. Some less impactful stuff I've seen be useful are: Low light tank starts (ambient room lighting), which can help at least delay problematic species estabilishing until the tank is more biodiverse and they have competitors. Stocking too many fish too quickly seems to be another common mistake. Sorry if you already have tried everything I've suggested though and it still hasn't worked out. I think sometimes people just seem to have bad luck even if they're doing everything correct. I also know it's an insanely complex hobby (and expensive and time consuming) and sometimes trying a new way of setting up a tank is just not reasonable.
