135g Reef Update: $10 DIY Acclimation Box, Emerald Crab vs Bubble Algae & Peppermint Shrimp vs Aiptasia results!
In an effort to improve the DIY reef aquarium fish acclimation box, I started again with a fully acrylic container, instead of from egg crates. This time around, I went with the recommendations of using a Kritter Keeper styled acrylic animal container and work from that. The result was excellent, it is currently in operation in the 135g tank and I couldn't be happier! In this video I also did a quick water change with sump clean up, and took a look at specific aspects of the 135g tank.
Timestamps:

Urchins have no method of burping if they swallow air, most fish stores will tell you to transfer them underwater to be on the safe side. I've never had a problem taking them out of water, but when I take it out I do it with the mouth pointed downwards and when I replace it into the tank I do it upside down( the mouth goes in last). This is to minimize the chance of air bubbles forming and to keep it from swallowing air. I hope that makes some sense. Love your videos and learning from your experiences keep up the good work and thank you very much. Best wishes to you and your family

Nice video. As always enjoying your tanks progression. I do have a comment, I wouldn't have used a soldering iron, I would have used a drill instead. It's a bit more work, but I believe it would have been a cleaner look. Yet it's only used for small periods of time like you said, so no big deal.

you can pull sea urchins out of the water but there is a chance that a air bubble gets trapped inside the stomach and then it will die, starfish have that problem too.

@Inappropriate Reefer, I saw from previous videos that you treated the tank with vibrant a few months back for bubble algae at half the dose. A couple of questions. 1. How long did it take you before bubble algae started dying? and 2. Did you see any negative effects on your corals? (beside hitting nutrients to 0 and getting dinos). Thanks.

It took about 8-10 weeks for me, maybe because I was doing half dose the first 3-4 weeks. It did eventually work and I did not see any negative effect on corals but like you mentioned, got to watch the nutrient level. 👍

So... just saw on your Instagram that you had what looks like a lawnmower blenny in your DIY acclimation box. I doubt that is what you are referring to as your next trick for controlling Aiptasia, so any hint at what you were referring to? or was it the blenny you were referring to? I ask because, my god I am having a huge breakout right now in my 29 gallon. I bought Berghias back in early January, and no dent to the Aiptasia, and honestly, I think the Berghias may have been either killed by the larger Aiptasia, or killed by some of the larger bristleworms in my tank, or something. I got an order from Reef Cleaners last week, with two Emeralds (cause I am starting to get bubble algae), lots of hermits and snails (freaking hair algae), and two peppermints. I have not seen the peppermints eat any Aiptasia yet, although I did see one of the larger Aiptasia looking quite damaged the other day, but it is regenerating as of a few minutes ago... so might not be because of the Peps, but who knows.
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I got a Molly Miller Blenny. They have a not-so-well-known reputation of eating Aiptasias, at least the smaller Aiptasias. I am keeping an eye out on the Aiptasias and see if they are decreasing in number... if so, I plan to continue using F-Aiptasia or Aiptasia-X to eliminate the larger ones while the blenny handle all the babies that pop up, and hopefully get 'em under control. Berghias worked very well for me in the small tank (17g, I got either 6 or 8) but starved very quickly once the Aiptaisas are gone. I remember reading that Peppermint Shrimp would eat the Nudis, but I assume they were added at different time? Keep fighting the good fight!

Is it just me but completely cleaning a sump or filter has more negative effects then good 🤔 Been running a fluval 306 canister on my tank for 4 years now and only ever cleaned it out once(got unplugged for 24 hours 🤦‍♂️) been battling zero nutrients for awhile now, so when does the nitrate factory go into operation 😂
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 3 жыл бұрын
For me I think it depends... if it's straight detritus collecting in area of low flow rotting away, I'd rather clean those out. I thought canister filter is totally fine (it works just like a sump?) as long as no detritus is trapped on anything in there rotting away? Or maybe your bio filtration has established enough to balance out whatever nitrate you got producing? Sounds like your system is mature and nicely balanced. 👍
