Indoors oaths of office are so rare. They have been just twice properly captured on camera, this and Reagan's in 1985. LBJ's aboard Air Force One was just photographed and recorded (audio, very bad quality). Harry Truman's was filmed, but without audio. Wouldn't it be cool to have them all in HD quality, including Washington's, Lincoln's, etc...? How would they look like? would we be surprised at how they behave, their mannerisms, their way of talking? probably.

Washington's oath was done as a series of questions to which Washington answered ,"I do." Lincoln's voice was high and shrill, not what modern ears would recognize as 'Lincolnian'

Stony2103 True. They could use affirm, but since it is the President elect who can pick the bible (Obama used Lincoln's), if she/he does not believe in God, the bible would mean little to her/him. Maybe the Constitution is more appropiate in that case.

President Theodore Roosevelt didn't, for example, and Presidents John Quincy Adams and Franklin Pierce swore on law books (by extension on the Constitution). Interestingly, though, both Presidents Jackson and Lincoln were supposedly the only non-religious presidents, yet they both used the bible.

As much as I'm not a fan of Obama, I'm a Republican, I do admire a lot about him. I do think this is the best of four swearing-ins of his. He and Robert bungled the first, the second was unofficial at the White House to make up for that bundle, then there was the private Sunday 2nd inauguration of this video, and then the official 2nd inauguration swearing-in the next day while better than the first, was not as good as this in my opinion. I wish President Obama well in his retirement years and thank him for his service to our nation.

Actually this was the official swearing in as the constitution says the term of a president begins January 20. When the 20th is on a Sunday there is a private swearing in which meets the requirements of the constitution and a public ceremony on Monday

There is no requirement for the president to swear on a bible or any book. For example, John Quincy Adams and Franlin Pierce swore on books of law while Teddy Roosevelt didn't use any book. So Obama not swearing on a bible does NOT invalidate the oath. And no for the record that book is NOT a Quran.

Instead of focusing on what Obama didn’t do let’s look at what he did do don’t just focus on 1 or 2 issues that he didn’t come through on and frame it as his whole term. Obama got health care reform passed something that presidents from the 60’s to Bill Clinton couldn’t pass that is a huge feat no matter what you say. They said Obama wouldn’t have been tough and go after Bin Laden if he was in Pakistan but Obama did get him. He saved the auto industry.
