During the 1950s and 1960s there was an indoor pool. It was removed when they needed to update the entire house in the late 1960s I believe.

There have been swimming pools at the WH. In 1939 an indoor pool was installed for president Roosevelt who suffered from polio. In 1979 president Ford had an outdoor pool installed as he and his sons were athletic. President Nixon's bowling lanes were removed to install a press room in that area.

THE 36th President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, always skinny-dipped (swam naked) in the indoor pool (that existed at the time) & insisting on having subordinates and members of Congress hold meetings with him while he swam naked, presumably as another way of having the upper hand in such meetings. Ronald Reagan had that pool filled in & become the new location for the White House Press Briefing Room (a.k.a.the James Brady Press Briefing Room). If he wanted a pool so badly, perhaps, he shouldn't have eliminated the one that already existed, indoors.
