Incentive spirometer NCLEX (or ATI) review with nursing interventions (rationales), demonstration, and why an incentive spirometer is used. This review NCLEX lecture will cover basic lung anatomy, the definition of an incentive spirometry, why it is used, nurse's role, live demonstration, and NCLEX style question you could expect on an exam. As a patient or nurse, it is important you know the proper procedure for using an incentive spirometer. An incentive spirometer is used to help improve lung function in patients and prevent atelectasis, especially prior to surgery. Many times a patient is educated how to use an incentive spirometer prior to surgery that involves the chest, thorax, or abdomen. These patients are at high risk for developing a condition called atelectasis. Atelectasis is a condition where the lung or part of it is collapsed and the alveoli sacs are unable to inflate and perform gas exchange. By using an incentive spirometer prior to and after surgery, it decreases the chances of a patient developing this condition. An incentive spirometer is also used in patients with lung disorders such as COPD and in treatment of pneumonia.

This is so awesome. My daughter is in nursing school preparing to graduate and this will be so helpful. I'm old school and wish we had something like this when I was preparing for NCLEX. Our tests were over two days with four increments of testing, 3 hours each and fill in the circles. LBVS I have to laugh when I see new grads upset because they have to wait 48 hours. We waited 8 weeks!

Hospital doctor: “Here, use this, it will really help you.” I’m a Covid patient recently out of hospital, but received NO explanation like this of the connection between Covid pneumonia, spirometer etc. Thank you so much. I never knew I wd really have to WORK on re-inflating my own lungs. I thot the supplemental O2 WAS the cure, but it is not. It does not re-inflate the alveoli.

I was sent home breathless in the ER because of COVID. Doctor refused to give me a steroid or inhaler. She told me to go home as COVID is uncomfortable. Our healthcare in the US is despicable. Pretty sad we have to come to KZbin to learn how to fix our lungs and Amazon to buy the breathing device.

I definitely recommend practicing as many NCLEX style questions as you can. I also recommend the Saunders Comprehensive Review Guide...it is a great book that contains many practice questions. I used it to prep for NCLEX. I wish you the best when you take NCLEX. Thank you for watching my videos and for taking the quizzes!

Was given one of these after open heart cardiac surgery. I'm 69 yrs old & 180lbs. How far up the tube should I be able raise the pistol up the tube ? I can get up to 1500. It has made a significance in my energy expenditure trying to breath.

Hello! Thanks for watching my videos! Absolutely! If you want to be a doctor...go for it! I've worked with several doctors who were nurses first, and they are EXCELLENT doctors because they have this natural bedside rapport that makes the patient feel at ease. Plus, the experience you have as a nurse gives you advantage in medical school and when you are starting out as a doctor. You know how the medical system works and how diseases present because you've been there providing care as a nurse. I wish you the best...follow your gut! Best wishes!
