I'm on the side of Leo's totem actually being his wedding ring and that he is awake at the end but the reason why I love the ending so much is because it doesn't matter. He does not look back to check the spinner once he notices the kids, even if it's a dream he doesn't care because he has found peace.

Nolan said that Inception is a movie about how to make movies. The more you change reality or the less you ground a film the more Fischer's/the Audience's subconscious and projections will attack the film. A trained subconscious, or a seasoned viewer like Fischer, will pick at the movie even more even when it is grounded. It is the perfect reason for why Ariadne isn't allowed to just fold the city onto itself, the entire plot of the movie, creating an idea in a subjects mind, becomes even harder if the dream looks fake. More on the movie being a film on how to make dreams/films: Cotillard is Mal/vehicle for guilt/Heth Ledger. Nolan is Cobb/Director. Hardy is Eames/Actor. Page is Ariadne/Set Designer and special effects. Levitt is Arthur/Producer. Rao is Yusef/Composer. Watanbe is Saito/Studio. Murphy is Fischer/Audience.

I'm glad you brought up Satoshi Kon. He had such an interesting and visceral way of exploring ideas visually and temporally in his animation. Paprika is a clear comparison, but Millenium Actress has always stood out to me as incredibly unique in its memory-like story-telling. The scene transitions flow so seamlessly between main character Chiyoko's memories of time and place, and how they've been influenced and changed by her work as an actress. I think Inception could have learned from this visual representation of memory and self image.
@fireaza4 жыл бұрын
I also remember reading an interview with Christopher Nolan shortly after Kon passed in which he cited Paprika as one of the inspirations for Inception.

Please just make more of this content. Y'all speak from such a breadth of knowledge it's a treat to listen to you guys just riff about a movie. It's nice to hear the substance of a video essay be conveyed through a fun conversation. Two things I was a little surprised you didn't bring up is 1. Fischer's character (Cillian Murphy), essentially Dom manipulates the shit out of him. His return to his family, is at the expense of manipulating someone else's conception of theirs. Despite this, I find that aspect of the movie is also very emotionally moving in terms of him reconceptualizing his relationship with his father (even though it's implanted). 2. The concept of the deeper the team goes into the dream, the deeper they're also going into Dom's subconscious and therefore his repressed trauma is kinda brilliant imo. I think the idea of essentially doing a mind heist which incorporates strong emotional elements with Dom's psyche and loss as well as incorporating the external goal of inception is such a great composition of two motivations and consequently totally avoids the macguffin trope: the heist is as much about success as it is character development. Anyways fucking love your content, I hope to see more of this format. Thanks for making my quarantine a little more bearable.

I know it's up to interpretation, but I think that Leo was awake at the end of the film. In every other scene where he saw his kids, he didn't see their faces, but in the final scene he actually sees their faces, and they are wearing slightly different clothes compared to previous scenes. Additionally, someone once pointed out how Leo actually has 2 ways to see if he's awake or not-his top and his wedding ring-and they explained that if you watch him check his wedding ring to know when he's awake.
@Headbanger666s4 жыл бұрын
Leo's totem was his wedding ring, they explain at the beginning that the top is Mal's totem... So yeah he is awake
@0sm1um764 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I view the ending as a bit of a bad part of the movie. I felt like it was a "fake dillemma". There is a lot of textual evidence that suggests it's real. The only scene which inarguably questions whether it's real is the scene with dream Mal talking about the ridiculousness of shady figures chasing him across the world.
@julianw70974 жыл бұрын
@Jesse Torres Guys guys guys both the wedding ring and the spinning top do not fit the definition of a totem as Arthur gives it. Nolan basically Incepted you with the idea that the top is a totem.
@l.a.94064 жыл бұрын
No one discusses the fact that at the end, Cobbs children are older then they were the first time you see them and we are finally able to see their faces. They are very young throughout the rest of the movie in the dream state, but when he talks to them on the phone, when he is awake, they are older. Even without his totem, the surprise you see on his face when he sees them for the first time, in a long time, at the end, could indicate that he is indeed awake.

It’s a fantastic little piece of a world that Nolan goes out of his way to only explain as little about as possible. Everybody focuses on the gimmick, but the characters are hard to pin down, nobody is clearly good or bad, it’s hard to tell what or if something is actually “happening”. It’s genius but critically flawed, and the best thing about it is that the world he builds is completely fresh and unique but trying to flesh it out would imo ruin the actual story that is being told which is great but is way too ambiguous for most people to say they actually enjoy. I once had a dream that Tyler the Creator tried to make out with me but he was a bad kisser.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty references by Jared. The references are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Rick and Morty episodes most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Jared's existentialist outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Camus, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Jared's Rick and Morty references truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Jared's existential catchphrase "What's up, Wisecrack?" which itself is a cryptic reference to KTMA-TV Minneapolis' Mystery Science Theater 3000 I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Jared's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Jared tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

27:20 memory & re-remembering is a recurring theme in Nolan’s filmography, in particular Memento: Leonard (also driven by and mourning the tragic death of his wife) believes that by committing to a routine of re-remembering, he can someone continue to function as per normal. But in doing so, his interpretation of those memories of his wife have become so abstracted from the actual events that he ends up misleading himself (like Cobb)

I think Mal as a ghost also connects to a common noir trope of being haunted by ghosts (particularly a femme fatale). But they've taken this trope and filtered it through this dream concept and it then connects with the heist tropes and makes this movie basically a high concept sci fi flick playing with classic cinema tropes. And that connects back to the idea of creating these dreams as synonymous with creating film. I'd give it a brilliant. It could be improved in some areas, but what it does do, it does so well.

The Good: Outstanding visuals, game changing soundtrack, and just the fact this movie exists for being an original concept with a blockbuster budget... The Bad: Yes, Nolan could have expanded Ariadne by presenting more mind bending pieces while using paradoxes and Escher like scenerios for her to explore and fight with her mind... The Brilliant: Even if Nolan didn't start writing the movie as an autobiographical filmmaking statement, doesn't mean it didn't become that. Just the fact he casted Leo DiCaprio as a better looking alter ego goes to show you this movie isn't about dreams, but how movies are like dreams and someone like Cobb (the director) places ideas in our head without noticing. Jared thinks Inception is The Matrix of millenials, yet wouldn't give it a Brilliant? Ok, Boomer... Thanx!!!

The blame turns into guilt and the sorrow turns into hate slowly till you become your own nightmare to trick yourself into not being scared and haunted by your nightmare. You plant the thought of its gone but you just delay it till you realize its worse now and now you really cant escape cause all the guilt poors into you and you go down the path of night terrors depression etc. But this is just my experience with it and so far i dont really know how to get rid of it from here, but still hoping theres a way.

I watch so many movies that often my dreams are like movies and I can even manipulate them. I also see how a very complex dream can deliver a very simple message of my subconscious. So that’s why I think this movie is brilliant, it gets how dreams work.

The Prestige is Nolan's best film to date, hands down. Do a show on Nolan's The Prestige, please and Thank you.

I think this film is brilliant because of all the scene changes, brilliant colors, different paces, ideas it can still feel intimate. I think cause the idea is easy to understand and personalise. I was 15 when I originally saw the movie and following the story was just fine for me and my friends

I dont really understand why people would get confused watching the film. Chris nolan really sets up the rules and model of his reality and dreams well in the movie. Its a straight movie with an "ambiguous" ending. Amazing and complex idea but superbly simplified. 10/10

I just watched Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead which is a film made from a play (which takes place in the background of Shakespeare's Hamlet in case you're not familiar) and they make a lot of interesting commentary on the structure of plays (and, by extension film). Not just what happens when characters are off screen but, for example, like, just showing up in the middle of a scene...whatever, go watch it.

Female: Two characters played by the same actress. Anne Hathaway in Interstellar and in Dark Knight Rises. 2nd choice is Scar-Jo in The Prestige.

This is so good! I'd love if you take on some videogame stuff. I really loved the Nier: Automata video. A deeper discussion about it could be awesome.
