One thing one of the music teachers in my high school did 30 years ago in the early 1980s was that he brought in an LP player (when LPs, cassettes, and 8 tracks were all there were) and just before the first students would walk into class each day he'd turn on some album that he had brought in that week and he would play any song that he felt like paying until a specific number of students had walked into the room. But by doing that he did 2 things................... 1) He gauranteed that the students would not talk or play their instruments until after he turned off the album (because some of the students would want to hear the songs that were playing) 2) He would expose us to such a variety of musical genres because he'd bring in everything from Frank Sinatra to Shostakovich to KISS to Olivia Newton John to Gregorian Chant to Minnie Pearl to various recordings of songs from 30 different movies from the 30s-50s to Scott Joplin to Dion and the Belmonts to..................... Some students would find some of the songs so enjoyable that they'd write down the name of the album and then ask their parents to but them the album for Christmas or their birthday or they'd go out and buy it themselves a few years after high school when they;d get a job.
