A simple one-sentence writing assignment set by third grade teacher Kyle Schwartz revealed the heartbreaking realities faced by her young students. Kyle, a Denver, Colorado Public Schools “Distinguished Teacher”, shares what she has learned from her students and offers educators ideas and strategies towards supporting their students academically and emotionally.

Elementary School Teacher
The driving force in Kyle Schwartz’ career has been to ensure that all children receive a quality education. Kyle is currently a third grade teacher at Doull Elementary School in Denver, Colorado where approximately 90% of the students live below or very near the poverty line and about half are learning English at school.
She has previously worked with educational organizations such as City Year, the Denver Teacher Residency, American Achieves and
TeachStrong. Designated a “Distinguished Teacher” by Denver Public Schools, Kyle has transformed a simple yet powerful classroom writing lesson into a national dialogue about the troubling realities American students face on a daily basis. Her book “I Wish My Teacher Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything for our Kids” offers teachers guidance towards providing the educational opportunities, loving support and guidance that all students need and deserve.

You can’t just set it aside and do homework sometimes, sometimes it controls you, sometimes you spend all that time after school crying trying to explain to someone how you feel. Sometimes you feel completely empty. Sometimes you’re too scared to tell your parents because you don’t know how they’re going to react.

Pink Lemonaid I know exactly how you feel. I will sit in my room and cry myself to sleep some nights. I will try and explain to my parents how I feel, but they don't understand. I try to explain to kids why I snapped at them. But, most of all, I have to try and concentrate on school work because my anxiety butts in and says, "don't ignore depression.... it's a part of you. But your teacher will get mad and you won't pass 6th grade and get into a good college if you slack off."

A problem is a problem, if it has a negative impact on you, it shouldn’t be compared to people who you think have it worse. SuperNerd Rose: There was one time, when I was at High School, that I choose to spend 5 hours babysitting (Which included making dinner and changing Diapers) my little brothers (while my parent were away) instead of writing a 500 essay on how to be a good parent, and Caregiver. I objected to my Teachers comment the next day that someone does not care about being a good parent, so HE called the Principal. The Principal asked about why I did not do my homework, I responded that I considered Experience more important than a writing assignment. The teacher was told that I had a good point, but a zero on this assignment was acceptable. After the Principal left, I fielded a number of question on how I cared for my brothers from my Classmates. Much to the Irritation of the teacher, some of how I did it did not align with the book (Wrestling around the floor with them was not supposed to be acceptable, but they wanted to play with Big Brother). Which is okay, since no one is perfect. He did shine a spotlight on it, so what was the problem?

I wish my teachers knew that forcing me to write a letter to my grandmother for grandparents day, even though she had passed away a week before, was the worst experience I've ever had with school. Even though I told her that I couldn't write to anyone, my grandfather was estranged from our family, my other grandmother was struggling with schizophrenia and couldn't deal with letters from outside people, and my other grandfather was long dead. She still urged me to write. I refused. I sat there and spilled tears onto my page instead of words. The pitying faces of other students didn't make me feel better. And the fact that I would still have to preform at the venue, even though I had asked to be excluded from the program due to my recent loss. Teachers need to ask these questions. We students would never tell them on our own.

Try actually telling someone. Maybe there is a way for you to write an anonymous letter to someone, be it the teacher, a friend or someone else you can trust. Many schools also employ someone, a therapist, support teacher etc. to whom you can go or write to, anonymously or not. It helps.

While in my experience, Public School Teachers fail at their responsibilities, but expect the students to make up for it. During one Meeting with the Principal, My Sisters Teacher expected my mom to help her do her math and placed all of the blame for her bad math grade on her. My mother asked about the previous nights Math homework. The reply was all of the answers were wrong, Your daughter would have done better with your help. My mother said that she helped last night. The Principal suggested that since my mother could not help with the math, the teacher should. Her response was What do you think I am A Tutor. The Principal replied Good Teachers ARE Tutors.

True, in 7th grade, we had 4 groups of kids with the 1 being the worst in math to 4th being the best. And I found it enjoyable as I could actually follow what the teacher was saying and as I was really good at English, I didn't have to rot in the 2nd group for long because the teacher transferred me to the 4th. I wish my teacher knew that people make mistakes and you can't judge someone because of them. Once I made a mistake on my paper and she called me out on it. She used as an example and said, "This is what happens when you don't pay attention! This is what happens when your grades drop! When you think you're too cool for studying! Omg ikr, how can teachers expect us to be perfect? No one is perfect. The school teaches us all the subjects and our mind cant just remember all that without making mistakes cause thats how we are. Sometimes Teachers also make mistakes when they have to teach only 1 subject, and go crazy if we make mistakes in our exams where we have to write for all the subjects (No hate to all the teachers, only to the ones who dont understand us)

I used to be where you are now. The social anxiety, crippling depression, crying in the bathroom while too afraid to go to class... I just want to tell you, if I'd known then what I know now I would have cut *a lot* more classes. Compared to one's mental health, things such as grades, school, keeping up appearances, etc. are so freaking trivial. Whenever school feels like torture, please, please don't go there. You *need* respite and, if you're anything like I used to be, you won't stop falling apart until you get it. No one can make you go to school, or do homework, or make presentations; no one but yourself, that is. So if the teachers ask, just say you're not feeling good and leave it at that. In the case that you don't feel at ease staying home, maybe there's a library somewhere that you can spend your time? Your anxiety will peak a little in the beginning, probably, but I promise it'll quickly start feeling like a huge weight off your shoulders. Be kind to yourself.

AbsoluteHarryPotter Fan never hate your teachers for something the school system does to you. Teachers choose to be teachers because they are passionate about what they teach, and they want to help the next generation to be passionate about it too. They can be out of touch and assign too much homework, but they usually aren’t the ones to blame. If you ever take a look at a curriculum (not a syllabus; they’re super simplified) you’ll understand. Teachers have a heap of classes to teach a heap of content to. You can’t blame them for not knowing how you feel about the work you’re assigned when you’re out of touch with their workload as well. Most teachers stay up into the late hours preparing for classes. It would crush any teacher’s soul to read that comment. All a teacher ever wants for their students is success. Even if you have troubles at home, they might too. Always give your teachers the benefit of the doubt, they’re paid extremely little for the work they do, and it’s usually not their fault.

It's also the fact that most of us have a high lexile score on alot of things, I'm the smartest in my class, even though I hate it, my score for reading and writing is about 7th grade level, and in preschool, I had 3rd grade reading skill, and aced every spelling test, even though.. I wish my teacher knew that being unfair isn’t fair to the one treated badly. Just because that child has a certain talent like dancing, singing. Let me play devil's advocate here: first Dog you have an autism diagnosis? If you do not she may think it's just a hormonal thing. Also if you self-diagnose GET A MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS. If you have a diagnosis and your teacher knows then idk Sorry if the self diagnosis thing offend you if you have a diagnosis. It's just that their are so many people that go through puberty and the hormones affect their mental state then self-diagnosing which can be harmful. Just my 2 cents

I wish my teacher knew, what I went through out of school. I wish they knew how I can’t sleep at night because of these terrifying nightmares that I have to go through. I wish they knew that my parents divorced and that I haven’t seen my dad in 2 years and I’m only 14.. I wish that at least someone knew that I don’t even like my dad because of what he has done to me and my family. I wish someone knew that I was alone and always in my thoughts. I wish someone knew, that I cried most nights, thinking about how worthless I am... but we all know that no one really cares. I don’t even have the guts to face someone and tell them face to face of what I went through. I wish my teachers knew that I struggle in class because I can’t concentrate with all these hurtful memories of my past. I wish my teachers knew that when I raise my hand in class, I need help, but they just look at me and go back to doing what they were doing. Do they not realize that I need help? That kind of makes me feel like I’m not even worth it. I wish my teacher knew that my mom is suffering slowly, taking care of 2 kids with a small house, all on her own. I have some of these thoughts in my head, every.. single.. day. I wish that I can just be like all the girls in my school, who have nice clothes, we are pretty, who has a lot of friends. I just wish people knew that I want to be good enough, but that’s never going to happen, because I. Am. Never. Good enough. I just hate how people use me.. they only text, hangout, call me when they need something. I also wish people were happy that they have both of their parents, and that their parents are happy. I just wish that I wasn’t so jealous of everyone. Thank you for reading little parts of my life.. some of these, I just kind of wanted let out, because I know that people in my school and people who know me don’t watch these kinds of videos.. so it’s kind of nice talking strangers to strangers.. but I don’t know why this popped in my recommendations now.

I wish my teachers knew that I can’t see well from a distance because my eyesight has gotten worse and I haven’t been able to get an appointment to get them rechecked. I wish they knew that I have to ask the people beside me to double check what’s on the board all the time. I wish they knew how awkward this made me feel and how often I avoid it.
