INCOMPETENT Pac-10 Officiating: UW @ OSU

Just awful officiating throughout the entire game. This call defined the night however, as Bernard was OBVIOUSLY down by three things:
1a) Knee
1b) Thigh
1c) Hip
1d) Arm
1e) Entire right side of his body
2) The ball crossed the plane of the goal line. Once that happens the play IS DEAD!
3) The ground caused the fumble. The ground can't cause a fumble.
There is an official standing right there. What does he do? Just let the play go on. Swallowed his whistle on a blatant call. Huskies go the other way.
Okay, so that's why we have review right? It's going to get overturned... I mean, how freaking obvious can a call get. The crowd is livid. Gotta review.
Hmmm, all the players are lining up. Where is the review? They're going to review it right? IS THE REVIEW GUY ASLEEP?!?!? Washington SNAPS it. There is now no review. Oregon State didn't have any timeouts to instigate the review. WHERE IS THE REPLAY OFFICIAL!?
Just an embarrassment for the Pac-10 in a long line of them. Almost cost the Beavers the game and a possible bowl berth. Ridiculous.
Beaver D stopped the Huskies though. Ball don't lie. Cheaters never prosper (unless its the whOregon/OU game).

I was AT the game (flew all the way from the East Coast to watch it) and your "old man" was right. Never, EVER have I heard a crowd that ANGRY and booing THAT LOUDLY for SO LONG (and legitimately so!). It was beyond atrocious officiating. There was an earlier play in the 1st Half where a Fuskie clearly YANKED OFF the helmet of OSU RB Bernard ... NO CALL! Yet, they "ejected" 3 OSU players for a little payback, after that non-call. WORST crew BY FAR that the Pac-10 (at the time) ever had.

What people may not realize was that, as badly as OSU got jobbed on the play, and as angry as the fans were about the call, the Beavers held UW on downs and won the game.

Officials held off on the whistle as a question about whether a fumble occurred before or after the player was down. If they blew it too soon, the situation couldn't be corrected (dead ball). If they blew it late, the situation could be corrected, time put back on the clock, etc. (live ball). Here, they played it safe, but (1) OSU couldn't call for a replay, because they had no TOs left, and (2) there was a problem with communication between the replay booth and the officials on the field.

Conni70, I so agree with you about that super bowl you mentioned (Super Bowl XL). There was just no reason to all Ben Roethlisberger's run a touchdown, especially after reviewing it on tape. If the referees had made the right call there, the Seahawks would've behind only 14-10 after the RandleEl to Ward touchdown pass. And the block below the knees call on Matt Hasselbeck a few plays before that was the worst call in the history of football. Bill Cowher must have paid those refs a lot of money.

He didn't score, but he was down. The ball should of remained with OSU and they should of had the next play at about the 1-foot line. Terrible officiating.

@mssaul27 furthermore I am pretty sure the ball only came out because his hand hit the ground, I would consider that the ground causing the fumble. I know thats an NFL rule, if its not a college rule it should be, just like you have to be tackled to be down.

let's get everything they missed here... 1) his whole side is on the ground 2) if he isn't down it's a TD anyways 3) "fumble" was caused by the ground 4) review officials in the booth thinking it wasn't worth a second look I've been to a few husker games too where they reviewed it a couple plays after the questionable play (the worst one being a touchdown overturned after they kicked the PAT and kickoff and 2 plays into their drive) they shouldve done that here even if it's against procedure

Remember when the reviewed it, after the game was over, NCAA said that all the officials were not allowed to ref any bowl games AND they could not ref any Beaver games in the future. NCAA ruled it a dead ball... which is why now, it seems we can't play the game with out the ref going "The play will go under review!"

My ruling would have been: he was down when his thigh touched the turf. At that time the ball was within a foot of the end zone. After he was down he slide on the ground and the ball crossed the goal line. Because he was already down, the play should have been over at that point. No touchdown, no fumble: OSU's ball first and goal at the one foot line.

I was at the game, The refs fled the field at a high rate of speed the moment the clock hit zero. And it wasn't the only play that the refs had screwed up. In the first half, they ruled that Bernard had fumbled on a 26 yard run, Riley had a Time Out, challenged, and got it overturned. The officials had also allowed the game to get way out of hand, allowing washington players to tackle OSU players out of bounds on punt returns, and then punch them, without so much as a penalty.

I was there on the balcony, right about the 5 yard line. there was no doubt in my mind from there that he was down, replays and this video only confirmed that. notice how the ref is right there watching it all happen not but 10 feet away. i have seen lots of bad calls in my day, but this was completely inexcusable. same goes for the TD they gave Washington earlier in the game. form the balcony it was clear that neither the ball nor the carrier got close to breaking the plane.

I'm begging for someone to find the footage of a Pitt-Rutergs game, where Pete Gonzalez did a qb sneak, was tackled clearly before the goaline, and the refs ruled it a touchdown. There was not one part of the ball or the players body in the end zone. The score help Pittsburgh secure the win. Trust me, the bad call you see here is nothing compared to that bocthed call.

Yeah the Pac-10 officials were terrible in the UGA v Arizona State game. At a crucial point in the game (3rd and goal for Georgia at the ASU goal-line with UGA leading 24-10), ASU had 12 men on the field. And it wasn't a "he-was-running-off-right-before-the-whistle" either. ASU had 12 guys in the formation and there was no call as they stopped UGA on 3rd down. Fortunately it didn't turn the game, but it was still absurd.

Forget discussion of TD or not. It's this sort of call that makes you wonder if the officials are taking bribes. If I've seen a worse call (in terms of it being blatantly wrong), I can't remember when.

Even if he wasn't down (which isn't really theoretically possible) the ground caused the fumble, and by rule the ground can't cause fumbles. How the referee blew the call standing 2 yards from the play is beyond me.

In truth the fact that they only called 3 penalities all game probably hurt us more. Ohio State's opponents are the least penalized teams in the Big 10 3 years running. Big 10 trying to "level the playing field"? Unfortunately, Ohio State did not play well enough to overcome that leveling.

As a husky fan I have to say that we definitely got away with one there. Sure, I liked the call, but should we have won, I don't think that I could properly enjoy it knowing that should have gone the other way.

I'm a dawg and I wish we had won, but I do admit that this was a terrible call and all to common of PAC-10 refs. Too many games have been won by the wrong team because of these idiots. Even with replay they either don't use it or still get it wrong. They took a win away from Oklahoma a few years ago when they should have beaten Oregon. Even UW fans realize how bad that call was!

There are 3 reasons this isn't a fumble. 1) His knee, hip, side, and elbow are down before the ball comes out. 2) The ground can't cause a fumble 3) the ball is across the goal line when it comes out of his hand. JMO, the PAC10 suspended this entire crew after reviewing the video. They didn't just reprimand one ref. The entire crew was suspended. It was that bad.

The guys upstairs made a huge mistake not calling it down to the field. Honestly though, it was probably the most exciting 4 downs of football I've ever witnessed. I've never heard Reser so loud!

I love how Bernard doesn't even lose control of the ball until his entire body is on the ground and even then he only lets it go because he is FULLY DOWN and the ref is standing literally a foot away and STILL gets it wrong. That call HAD to be made on purpose, HAD to. Not really - all the bad decisions on the Cardinals came in one drive, which only resulted in 3 points for the Steelers. The key point in the game was the 14pt play just before the half, not the officiating.
