Shostakovich - Symphony n°6 - Leningrad / Mravinsky 1972

The first album I ever bought (with my allowance money), mid-1970's. (It would take another several years before I learned to appreciate the rock music that the other kids were listening to at the time.) Still one of my favorite symphonies, with its triptych of tragedy, mocking (with brief violence), and finally a shift to the positive: triumph.

Particularly fine rendering of an entirely underrated symphony. Mravinsky premiered this symphony in 1939 so you can be pretty confident that this version is close to Shostakovich's vision for the piece. The opening Largo movement must surely be one of the most moving in the 20th century classical repertoire. So lean and spare but quivering with intense emotion and indeed pain.

Wunderschöne live Aufführung dieser ein bisschen selbstparodischen Sinfonie mit seidigen Töne aller Streicher, milden Töne aller Holzbläser und brillanten Töne aller Metallbläser. Der unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das weltklassige Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo mit völlig effektiver Dynamik. Echt authentisch!

I'm home schooling, and we are learning about world war 2 at the moment. Long into Germany's siege of Leningrad, when the people of Leningrad were finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel after so much death, they gathered at Philharmonic Hall and this beautiful piece was played, written by Dmitri Shostakovich and preformed by soldiers recalled from the front lines. So full was the celebration, the German soldiers found themselves being demoralized by a people they thought they where defeating...What a terribly fantastic moment in history! Thank you for sharing this masterpiece! :)

this sinphony was next to the piano trio 2 (check it out) my introduction to shostakovich. i had two kondrashin recordings on par with this outstanding interpretation - and one by haitink and had a hard time recognizing it was the same piece,
